Chapter 5

Author: Words to Life
The phone shattered with a loud crack, fragments flying everywhere.

The car suddenly swerved to the side of the road and stopped. I was stunned by his abrupt action. Before I could react, his hand clamped around my throat. His grip was so tight it felt like he would strangle me to death.

"Lucia, didn't I warn you not to scheme anything to hurt Alice?" His eyes were bloodshot, like a wild animal out of control. "She's carrying my child! How dare you go after her!"

I immediately understood. Alice had gotten into a car accident on the road, and it just happened to be while she was driving my car—while I was not in it.

"Domenico, wait! This wasn't me! I didn't do anything!" I desperately tried to explain, attempting to bring him back to reason.

However, Domenico would not listen at all. He jerked the steering wheel violently and slammed his foot down on the gas pedal.

"Shut up! I'm taking you to the hospital right now so you can kneel and apologize to her face!" he roared as the car weaved frantically through traffic.

"Domenico... stop! There's a red light ahead!"

At more than 120 miles per hour, I stared at the glaring red light, my whole body trembling with fear.

No matter how much I cried out or begged, Domenico ignored me completely and charged straight through the intersection.

Just as we crossed the stop line, an overloaded truck barreled toward us from the side.

The truck slammed into the side of our car. We spun violently out of control and then crashed hard into the guardrail on the side of the road.

The brutal impact left me bleeding from the head. Blood from my forehead blurred my vision.

I clutched my aching abdomen. The cramping pain grew more intense. I could feel life slipping away bit by bit.

"Domenico... save me..." My voice came out weak as a whisper. "The car's leaking fuel... Get me out quickly!

"Domenico, please don't leave me! Our children..."

The moment I finished speaking, his phone buzzed in his pocket. It was a text from Alice.

[Domenico, someone tampered with the car. The brakes failed! It had to be Lucia. She tried to kill me!]

After reading the message, Domenico kicked open the mangled car door and stepped out. His gaze on me was full of mockery.

"You're willing to risk your life just to stall me from seeing Alice. Quite the performance there. Stay here and reflect on what you've done. When Alice is out of danger, I'll send someone to get you."

I could smell the gasoline getting stronger inside the car, and panic seized me. I pounded desperately on the window, trying to make him notice something was wrong with the vehicle.

"It's really going to explode! Believe me this once! Please!"

However, he turned and walked away without a moment's hesitation.

The smell of gasoline grew thicker. I could hear the drip of the leaking fuel tank.

In my desperation, I noticed something fall from his pocket. It was a plate with the words, 'Until death do us part', inscribed on it. He had carved it himself when he proposed.

One second before the car exploded, I grabbed hold of that plate with all my strength.

A deafening explosion came next, and the car was blown to pieces.

When Domenico arrived at the hospital, he saw that Alice had only sustained minor injuries.

She was lying in bed, acting coy. Relief washed over him.

Just then, one of his men rushed over with a report. "Don, Signora had an accident. This was all we could find at the scene..."

The subordinate handed him a plate covered in blood and charred black.

On the back, the inscription, 'Until death do us part — Domenico & Lucia', was still clearly visible.

Only then did he realize that the woman he had discarded like trash, the woman he believed had betrayed him, was gone.

Domenico gripped the engraved plate, his fingers trembling slightly. His heart felt constricted, like he was suffocating.

After that day, Domenico truly lost his mind. He spent all his time outside the estate gates like a beggar, wearing tattered clothes and huddled in the corner. He watched me come and go with the children.Sometimes the children would glance at him curiously and point, asking, "Mommy, who's that man?"He would force out a smile uglier than crying. He would hold broken toys he had scavenged from somewhere and try to hand them over, mumbling, "Sweeties... Daddy..."However, I never let the children accept anything from him. I never let them get close to him. And I never spoke another word to him.Salvatore once asked me if this was too cruel.I looked out the window at the figure huddled in the rain, feeling nothing. "Father, when he tried to sell me for one dollar at that auction, when he abandoned me in an exploding car for her, when he killed our children with his own hands… Did he ever consider whether that was cruel?"Salvatore sighed and said nothing more.Domenico died on a

The screen displayed a newly completed acquisition contract. Every asset of the Calvetti family now belonged to me."As for you..." I looked Domenico up and down the same way he had once appraised me at the auction, my eyes full of contempt. "You're not even worthy of licking my boots now."Domenico's face turned deathly pale, but he did not care at all about the wealth and status he had lost. He just stared at me in a daze, as if me being alive was the greatest mercy he could receive."It's okay, it's okay..." he rambled incoherently. "What matters is that you're alive. Lucia, can we start over? I got rid of that bitch Alice. I stayed celibate for three years for you. I think about you every day. I've been atoning every day—""Celibate for three years?" I let out a cold laugh, cutting off his self-indulgent speech. "You didn't do it to atone. You did it to make yourself feel better, to escape the guilt of killing your wife and children with your own hands."Domenico, don't dress

They only knew that Signora L was ruthless and shrewd, and that no one dared cross her.Tonight was the Calvetti family's last shred of dignity. To settle debts, Domenico had no choice but to auction off the family's ancestral estate. The auction hall was magnificent and packed with distinguished guests.Domenico sat in a corner wearing a shabby suit. The bullet grazed past Alice's cheek and shattered the mirror behind her. Glass shards rained down on her.Alice lost control of her bladder and collapsed to the floor, trembling violently. "Don't kill me! Domenico, don't kill me!"Domenico threw the stack of documents in her face. Papers were scattered across the ground. "So, it was you. It was always you!" He advanced step by step, blood-red tears streaming from his eyes. They were the manifestation of extreme grief and rage."You fabricated that video to frame Lucia. You bribed the doctor to fake your pregnancy. You even tried to kill the children in her womb! Because of a worthless whore like you, I killed the woman I loved most. I killed my own flesh and blood!"He raised the gun and aimed it at Alice's forehead, his finger tight on the trigger."No! Domenico! Don't kill me!" Alice screamed. In this life-or-death moment, she suddenly cried out. "I know a secret about Lucia! About that dagger!"Domenico's finger froze on th

I recuperated at the estate Salvatore had arranged for me.The scenery was beautiful, and it was far from the noise of the world. No one here knew my past. The moment the flames shot into the sky, a pair of strong hands yanked me out through the other side of the car window. It was Salvatore's personal bodyguard.I was covered in blood, my consciousness fading. I was shoved into an armored car parked in the shadows.Through the tinted one-way glass, I watched Domenico arrive and rush toward the burning wreckage like a madman. He knelt before the inferno, clutching that plate in his hand. His expression was agonized and lost.I thought I would feel heartbroken, that I would be reluctant to leave. However, as I touched my still aching abdomen and felt the faint flutter of two tiny lives, all I felt was emptiness.Salvatore sat beside me and handed me a tissue. He sighed.
