Chapter 11 : If You Make a Mistake, You Have to Apologize 2

Author: The Fluttering Snow
“Uh… I can’t, Paula. I need to help my mother with the desserts,” Ruby said, eager to leave. The siblings’ looks made it clear she wasn’t wanted.

“What a shame. Next time, Ruby, you must come and chat with me. I miss you and want to spend some time catching up with you.”

“Yes, next time, Paula,” she replied.

“Theo, put the desserts in bowls, wash the boxes and return them to Ruby.”

“Yes, Mom.” Theo carried the basket of desserts into the kitchen as his mother had instructed. In under five minutes, he returned with the cleaned lunch boxes.

“You go and open the door for Ruby as well.”

“Yes,” he replied reluctantly.

Ruby waved goodbye to Paula before turning to Chris, her gaze lingering on him. Following Theo to the front door, she knew he would seize any chance to tease her again.

“Are you going to flirt with Chris like last time, Ruby? So sly,” Theo said. Just as she thought, he was already teasing her before she even reached the door.

“Think whatever you want. Just give me back the basket.”

“Wait.” Theo held onto the basket that Ruby was trying to snatch.

“What now?”

“You’ll never succeed, Ruby. Do you know why? I once told Chris that I didn’t want you as my sister-in-law. And do you know what Chris said?” Theo paused for a moment to gauge her reaction. Ruby showed no sign of anger, standing still as if she were waiting for his answer.

“Never, Theo. That’s what Chris said, Ruby,” he repeated Chris’s words, smiling teasingly to make Ruby angry. She only pressed her lips together, not replying.

“Now that Chris has made it clear, remember this: you’ll never be my sister-in-law. Get over it, and don’t cause any trouble in my house again.” Theo shoved the basket back to her forcefully before slamming the door in her face with a loud bang.

He watched Ruby walk back to her house in a daze. His original plan—to trick someone into falling in love and then abandon them—didn’t work on Ruby. Since he couldn’t make her fall for him, there was no need to pretend to be good to her anymore.

Ruby admitted that she was quite shocked by Theo’s words. In the past, she had been the one throwing tantrums at him. Was this some kind of revenge? She walked inside her house, head lowered, carrying the basket.

“How did it go, Ruby? Did you meet Paula?”

“Yes, Mom. I’ve already apologized to Paula.”

“That’s good. If we make a mistake, we should apologize; it’s the right thing to do. So why the sulky face?”

“It’s nothing, Mom. By the way… have you finished packing the treats yet? I was planning to help you.”

“There are only fifty boxes left. Come here. If you want to help, put sesame seeds in the boxes for me.”

“Yes, Mom.” Ruby put the basket away and returned to sit on a chair, helping her mother carefully wrap the treat boxes. She tried to push all of Theo’s words out of her mind for the moment.

But those words still lingered in her thoughts. No matter how harshly Theo scolded her, it didn’t compare to what he had said—that she would never become his sister-in-law. Those words came from Chris’s mouth. She had thought that after seven years, she could leave the past behind. On the contrary, it felt as if the memories had been buried, and returning here brought all those feelings back again.

Later, she walked over and sat by the window, gazing at the neighboring house. A flood of memories rushed through her mind. She had tried to let go, but she couldn’t. In the end, it was she who clung to these feelings—a love that would never be fulfilled.

From that day onward, Ruby changed her routine. She tried to avoid going to Paula’s house, even during the next two cleaning sessions, swapping duties with her mother and letting her handle the cleaning while Ruby stayed home to make desserts instead. Having grown up closely alongside her mother, she was able to learn quickly and manage the tasks without much difficulty.

“Ruby, Paula has been asking about you,” Amber came back home and said to her daughter after finishing the last cleaning session.

“Why would she, Mom? I don’t even know what I’d talk about with her if I went there,” Ruby replied.

“You could just talk about everyday things… or is it that you don’t want to see someone there?” Amber hit the nail on the head. Ruby’s face fell slightly, and she gave a hesitant denial.

“It’s not like that.”

“Chris and Theo leave for work early in the morning. If you see them, it’s just a short moment, that’s all. So why be afraid, Ruby?”

“Let’s just not talk about that family, Mom. I’m trying not to think about them, not to care anymore,” Ruby said.

“Are you mad at Chris and Theo?”

“No, I’m not. But Chris and Theo act like they don’t want me around, so I don’t want to bother them anymore. I’m afraid I’ll just annoy them,” she said, with a hint of sulking in her voice.

“Oh, can my daughter be this considerate now? Back in the day, I warned you so many times, but you never listened. You were always sneaking over the fence to see that boy,” Amber teased, letting out a laugh. She felt relieved that Ruby wasn’t being stubborn and self-willed like before.

“I’ve made up my mind, Mom… but I still can’t let go.”

“Ruby, Chris isn’t the only guy out there. You can look at others, too.”

“Right now, I don’t want to look at anyone. I just want to stay with you like this.”

“You’ve got such sweet words, my dear. Oh, today I’m going out shopping. You drive me, okay? We can also stop and pick out some new clothes.”

“Sounds good, Mom. I’ve been back here for almost a month and haven’t had time to go shopping yet. Just give me a moment, I want to take a shower and change first. I smell like coconut all over.” She lowered her head and sniffed at her own clothes.

“Alright, I’m going to take a shower too. I smell really sweaty.” Amber tugged at her own shirt collar, sniffed it, and shook her head, just like her daughter.

Ruby and her mother spent time shopping for household items and clothes. It was a time of happiness that Ruby had not experienced for many years. When she worked on her father’s farm, it had been nothing but work, work, and more work. Everyone had taken life quite seriously, and there had been few occasions for fun or parties. She took her mother to a beauty salon, followed by a massage parlor, making the most of their time together.

Portia opened her room door for her older brother with a slightly surprised face, though she already expected that he would surely come to ask about Nicholas.“Tell me, why do you trust him so much?”“Patrick, how can you ask that? It's embarrassing, you know?” Portia walked over and dropped onto her bed. Her brother followed and sat on the edge of the bed, stroking his sister’s hair back and forth.“No need to be shy. Tell me more so I can think of him differently.” Even though things had cleared up, the suspicion still remained.“Patrick, do you know that Nicholas got a new tattoo on the left side of his chest?”“Hmm, really?”“Yes.”“So?” He couldn’t imagine how it related to this. His younger sister quickly got up from the bed, grabbed her mobile phone, opened a photo she had taken, and handed it to her brother.“Is this Nicholas?”“Yes.” Portia showed a weird smile, as if something was hidden in this picture. Patrick tried to look deep and interpret the meaning.

Amidst the soft chirping of the birds, Portia, sleeping soundly, nuzzled closer for warmth, clinging to him as if he were her favorite cushion. But why could her soft cushion move? She quickly opened her eyes.“Nicholas.” Portia looked at Nicholas, who was already propped up on his elbow, watching her with a warm smile. Suddenly, her heart warmed up as well.“What time is it? I fell asleep without knowing.”“You slept soundly. You were tired last night.” Nicholas’s eyes shimmered. He playfully stroked Portia’s soft cheek.“Nicholas, my body aches all over.” The little one looked exhausted and sulky. Nicholas stifled a laugh with affection. How could she not ache? Last night, he had put in his full strength without holding back.Knock, knock, knock.“Breakfast is here.” He got up from the bed and flicked the blanket to cover her completely. He didn’t want anyone to see even a toe of the person on the bed.He opened the door just a crack, received the food tray, and placed

He moved his palms up to cradle her face, bringing his lips close slowly. He gave her soft, sweet kisses over and over until Portia could barely catch her breath. Her breath caught even more when something under the water pressed against her. A hard desire pushed through the fabric, coming into close contact with her body.“Portia.” A hoarse voice revealed the speaker’s mood. Nicholas wasted no time. He pulled Portia’s wrist to follow him to the stairs in a secluded corner on the other side of the pool. This corner was completely dark with a wooden board blocking the cliff view.“Nicholas... ah!” The person who was showered with kisses without a chance to prepare became weak immediately.Nicholas sat on the bottom step. He settled Portia onto his lap, keeping her upper body clear of the water. Portia held him close while the strap of her bra slipped loose. His thick palms moved under the small tank top before pulling it up to stay above her chest.“Mmm!” Portia arched her chest

As soon as Portia hung up, Nicholas burst into loud laughter. He was both amused and entertained by Portia’s lying skills. He couldn’t believe she dared to say that.“You are so wicked.”“Wait, why are you calling me that, Portia? I didn’t tell you to lie to your mom. You thought of it and did it all by yourself.”“It’s because of you, Nicholas, that I had to lie.” Portia made a grumpy face, putting all the blame on him alone.“There, there. Don’t be like that. Don’t be sulky.”“I am not a child. You keep saying I’m sulky all the time.”“But it suits you, Portia. You are both sulky and a crybaby, but everything about you is lovely and adorable.” Nicholas smiled all the way to his eyes. Portia sat twisting her body with shyness on the bed.“Do you think your mother believed what you just said?”“I don’t know. I heard a soft sigh before she hung up, too.”“It would be a miracle if she believed that. I probably have to avoid going to your house for a while.” His ambiguou

“Thank you. By the way, where can we have dinner?”“Our kitchen is open until 10:00 PM. You can call to order and eat on the balcony by the pool, or you can eat at the restaurant. The phone number is provided right by the telephone.”“Thank you.”After the staff member walked away, Nicholas went to lock the room door while looking for the person who had entered before him. Portia had opened the balcony door and was sitting there admiring the beauty of the swimming pool, which contrasted with the forest and mountain view in front. Their room was situated almost right on the edge of a steep mountainside. Fortunately, there was a railing in front of the pool.“The air after the rain is wonderful, Nicholas.” The person sitting on the round rattan chair turned to look at Nicholas, who had opened the sliding door to sit opposite her.“Aren’t you hungry, Portia? I’m starting to get hungry. Since we went cycling, we haven’t had dinner yet. We’ve just been driving back and forth.” Nic

Both of them cycled around the reservoir until they completed the full circuit before returning the bicycles to the rental shop. Nicholas bought a whole coconut from a nearby stall for Portia to drink and satisfy her thirst. Both sat down to rest and drank coconut water to recover from their exhaustion.“What was so good about that message, Portia? I saw you smiling to yourself the whole way while we were cycling.” Nicholas couldn’t help but wonder. Portia’s cheeks had been puffed up with a grin ever since that moment.“It was nothing.”“Hey, Portia, don’t keep secrets from me.”“And what about you, Nicholas? Do you have any secrets from me?”“None. None at all, Portia.” The respondent shook his head quickly.“Are you sure?”“Of course. Why would I lie to you?”The two sat smiling at each other, both thinking they were keeping their secrets well hidden. Even though Nicholas didn’t say it directly, Portia felt her heart swelling so much it nearly burst out of her chest.
