The body was dented, the windows were shattered, and the front bumper of the car was smashed against a tree trunk. The head got down from his bike and surveyed the area. He walked closer to the car, examining it thoroughly. "It's empty," he grunted, his voice echoing across the woods. One of his men said, his bike idling, "Boss, maybe they ran off?" The leader's eyes narrowed. “Search them everywhere,” he thundered, reverberating through the trees. “They’re injured; they can’t walk anymore. We have to locate them before they receive aid.” Spreading out in various directions, the motorcyclists nodded. Their gazes searched the underbrush for any evidence of Austin and Sara, and they started to comb the forest. The

Austin sat in the vehicle, his facial contortion angry. Taking a deep breath, he answered the phone in an effort to steady himself. He said, sounding normal, "Hey, Dad."On the other end of the line, his father's enthusiastic voice said, "Austin, I just spoke to your girlfriend, Sara. She is delightful. I had no idea regarding you were seeing someone.”Austin's eyes opened in astonishment, and he turned to glance at Sara, who was observing her with a smug face. She made him extremely angry, but he tried to remain calm.“Dad, we are...uh... “ His father showed clear enthusiasm. “That's great, son! I'm really delighted for you. Sara will make your mother very happy to meet. When are you two coming over?” Austin was caught in a maze. Not now, when his father was so enthusiastic, he could not reject the lie Sara had told. “Dad, I'll be there in a few hours. I have to leave now.” His fury spilling over caused him to swiftly hang up the call. He turned to Sara, his eyes blazing with rage.

Austin negotiated the vehicle amid torrential rain, his hands clutching the steering wheel firmly. Straining to keep up with the deluge of water, the windshield wipers swished back and forth.Sara stayed beside him, arms crossed, and glared at him with a piercing gaze. Austin understood she was still seething from their prior fight and could feel her eyes on him.Austin said, “Stop staring; outside is rain; inside the car temperature is elevated because of you.” Sara's eyes remained fixed, but her jaw tightened in rage. She gritted her teeth; the sound clear in the charged quiet. She said, "You are insane for doing this; how can you be so cool? We could have waited for the weather to clear up, but no, you had to insist on driving. Now we are on the road for 8 to 10 hours though.”With his neutral demeanor, Austin held constant eye contact with the roadway. He did not react to Sara's explosion or flinch. Sara still had anger left to burn. Her eyes darkened her anger and irritation ex

Ryder's elegant black car slid effortlessly over the rain-soaked streets, its windshield wipers swaying back and forth in a consistent motion. Still seething, Sara sat rigidly in the backseat, arms crossed and eyes fixed on the window. Her pain and indignation remained. Austin sat next to her, his eyes glued on the back of the driver's head, his expression a harsh mask. Sara had not expected him to talk any words since their argument. Sara and Austin got out of the car in front of the airport and avoided umbrellas and rushing passengers as they entered the terminal. The airport was hectic; harried airline employees and irritated passengers' noises permeated the air. Sara and Austin arrived at the check-in counter, their eyes searching the screens for their flight information. Then they saw it: a large, red “CANCELLED” sign flashing beside their flight number. Austin's expression darkened in rage. Striding up to the counter, he mumbled, "What the...?" His voice rising, he insisted,

Sara strode back and forth across the room, her fury and disappointment spilling over. She had had enough of Austin's insults and his dismissive attitude. She was finished. Her thoughts returned to the chat she had with Ryder on the dance floor as she paced. He had viewed her no one else had—potential—and he had been friendly and brilliant. Ryder remarked, his gaze fixed on Sara, "You're an amazing woman. I think you would make a terrific business adviser. Would you consider coming along?" Sara's heart was halfway to thumping at the offer. Ryder had looked beyond that; no one had ever seen her as anything other than a beautiful face. He had witnessed her intelligence, drive, and enthusiasm. Sara knew what she had to do now as she seethed in rage standing in her hotel room. She was ready to quit her job, leave Austin and his insults behind, and gamble on Ryder's offer. Sara felt a weight lift off her shoulders and a will wash over her. She was about to change and was reclaiming co
