Chapter 5

Author: Washing Wheat
"Go get her," Zane repeated, his voice carrying a grim finality.

Adrian wiped away his tears as he headed toward the staircase.

I watched the scene unfold, a strange feeling spreading through my chest.

For the past three years, everyone in this family had looked down on me. They thought I was an embarrassment to the Reynolds family, a family packed with business geniuses. Yet when their lives were on the line, the first thing they thought of was using their last card to get me out safely.

I took a deep breath and turned back toward my room.

I walked over to the huge marble bar and switched on the custom-made coffee machine. The sound of the grinder seemed painfully loud in the quiet room. I took my time making a cup of freshly ground coffee. Soon, its rich aroma filled the air.

I picked up the delicate ceramic cup and headed downstairs in my high heels, one step at a time.

Adrian was halfway up the stairs when he saw me coming down. He froze.

I walked past him and headed straight for the living room. Every pair of eyes turned toward me.

I was wearing a seven-figure silk robe, my long hair loosely tied behind my head. In my hand was a cup of steaming coffee.

I looked completely out of place against the tense, desperate atmosphere filling the room.

When Julian saw me, his eyes lit up. His gaze shamelessly traveled over me. "Ms. Smith certainly lives up to her reputation."

He stood and gave me a slight bow, putting on his best gentleman act. "You're still drinking coffee at a time like this. Your composure is actually more impressive than that of these businesswomen."

I ignored him and walked over to the main sofa. I looked down at the spot where he had been sitting, frowning slightly.

"Which country bumpkin was sitting here? He got my sofa dirty."

My voice was not loud, but in the deathly quiet living room, every word carried clearly to everyone.

The smile on Julian's face froze. A flash of malice crossed his eyes, but it was quickly hidden behind his polished, gentlemanly expression. "Ms. Smith, you certainly have a sense of humor."

Jocelyn's expression changed dramatically. She grabbed me and pulled me behind her.

"Get back to your room. Now." Her voice was low, and her palm was covered in cold sweat. "This isn't the time for you to speak."

Maverick reacted too. He rushed over, instinctively covered my eyes with one hand, and pulled me backward.

"Yvonne, be good. Jocelyn told you to go upstairs, so go upstairs." His voice was tight.

At this critical moment, the entire family instinctively protected me. None of them wanted me to anger the madman who held the Reynolds family's fate in his hands.

"Zane." Julian's voice had turned completely icy. The polite mask was gone.

"It seems your Reynolds family refuses to bow until you've backed yourselves into a dead end. Since this Ms. Smith is so brave… Then there is no need for her to sign the divorce papers. I will personally watch your entire family lose everything."

He pulled his phone from his suit pocket and prepared to give the final order to wipe out Reynolds Group.

Zane closed his eyes in pain, while Cecilia collapsed onto the floor in despair.

As for me, I reluctantly turned around and pulled myself free from Maverick's grip. The moment I did, I caught sight of Julian's raised wrist. The sleeve of his silver-gray suit had slipped back, revealing a watch that gleamed beneath the lights.

It was a Patek Philippe, a custom Starry Sky edition. My hand froze in midair as I stared at it.

No way!

The big shot was wearing a fake watch?

I could not help laughing calmly to myself. "Putting on an act like some international tycoon…"

My clear voice rang through the living room, stopping Julian in the middle of dialing.

I pointed at his wrist. "The markings on that Patek Philippe are crooked. The certification documents for your three gold mines must've been made with Photoshop, right?"

"Get what?" Zane suddenly cut Jocelyn off.His face was still pale, but most of his energy had returned. The authority of the man who had led the Reynolds Group for decades had returned with it."The Reynolds family just survived a crisis. Instead of thinking about how to stabilize the company, you're already thinking about buying handbags?"Jocelyn lowered her head awkwardly after being scolded. However, I could see the excitement she was trying to hide.Reynolds Group had not only survived. They had also unexpectedly discovered that the woman they had always dismissed was far more powerful than any of them had imagined. For someone like Jocelyn, who always put the family's interests first, that mattered more than anything."Dad."I gently tugged on Maverick's arm, signaling for him to help his father sit down."Jocelyn really has worked hard for the Reynolds family these past few years. It's just one handbag," I said casually."The boutique manager said another shipment of

"Get the security team inside. Get these pieces of trash out of here."More than a dozen fully armed security guards of the Reynolds family rushed through the doors. They subdued Julian's men in seconds. Two guards hauled Julian to his feet. His face had been pressed against the floor, and his gold-rimmed glasses lay nearby, the lenses cracked into a spiderweb of fractures."Yvonne." Julian was still struggling as he glared at me viciously. "Don't celebrate too soon. You have no idea what will happen to you after crossing the people behind us."I stood up and walked over to him, looking down at the defeated scammer. "I'd love to see which shortsighted group of investors is stupid enough to come after me."I turned toward Maverick. "Hand him over to the police. He forged documents and committed fraud involving tens of billions of dollars. Let him spend the rest of his life inside learning how to use Photoshop.""Let me go!"Julian thrashed like a fish out of water, but the securi

"How can you possibly own them?"Jocelyn and Cecilia looked at me too, their eyes filled with the same disbelief.Of course, they were shocked. In their eyes, I was just a brainless gold digger who spent every day going on shopping sprees. All I cared about was buying rare Hermès pieces and swiping Maverick's black card.I stood up and walked toward Julian. My heels clicked sharply against the floor with every step. "How can I?" I threw his question right back at him."Because when I was buying handbags, I happened to buy out the entire supply chain for Hermès's rare exotic skins."I watched his pupils widen in utter shock. My voice remained perfectly calm. "You all thought I was just shopping?"I turned toward Zane. "Dad, what I was buying was controlling ownership of the mines and supply chains behind the world's top luxury brands. Those three gold mines? They are nothing more than the three least important assets in my portfolio."I looked at Julian, who had gone completel

I sighed helplessly as I picked up my coffee, which had gone slightly cold, and took a small sip.I said slowly, "Mr. Hoffman, you just said those three gold mines are held by the organization behind you. Which organization is that?"Julian froze and looked at me suspiciously. "Why are you asking?""No reason." I set down my coffee cup and pulled my phone from the pocket of my silk robe. "I just want to make sure. You've been using my name to scam people out there. I was wondering if you've been paying me royalties."I unlocked my phone and opened my contacts. Then, I dialed an encrypted number. The phone rang twice before someone answered.A man's voice came through, thick with a heavy foreign accent. "Ms. Smith, how can I help you?"I turned on the speakerphone and set the phone on the coffee table."Leonard." My voice was lazy and casual. "Whose name are the Blackridge Two, Blackridge Three, and Silver Creek gold mines registered under?"The voice on the other end immediate

"Now look at the edge of the terrain in this satellite image." I pointed to an incredibly tiny, jagged edge on the image. "That is a classic Photoshop feathering artifact. Whoever edited this forgot to clean up the leftover pixels."And there's something else."I tossed the file onto the coffee table with a soft thud. "The Blackridge Two mining site at these coordinates was hit by a once-in-a-century landslide last month. The terrain has completely changed."This image was pasted together using satellite data from three years ago, wasn't it? What happened? Are scammers getting lazy these days?"The living room fell silent again. The only sound was the soft hum of the central air conditioner.Jocelyn suddenly lunged toward the coffee table and grabbed the document. She pulled a high-powered magnifying glass from her bag and stared at the exact edge I had pointed out.Cecilia leaned in beside her.Their breathing grew faster.A muscle in Julian's face twitched, but he still manag

The air seemed to freeze.Everyone stood there, stunned, unable to believe what they had just heard.Julian's finger froze over his phone screen. Slowly, he raised his head and stared at me as if I were insane. "What did you say?"His voice was low, with a hint of barely restrained fury.Jocelyn was the first to react. She grabbed my arm so hard that it hurt."Yvonne, have you lost your mind?" She hissed furiously under her breath. "What are you doing at a time like this? Are you trying to get us all killed?"Maverick panicked too and tried to pull me behind him again. "Yvonne, stop it. This has nothing to do with you."I shook off their hands.Still holding my coffee cup, I calmly walked over to the coffee table and set it down beside the stack of so-called certification documents."I'm not crazy, and I'm not causing trouble." I looked straight into Julian's eyes without the slightest hesitation. "I said the watch you're wearing is a cheap fake."I pointed at the watch face.
