“Jackie, what kind of things do you like to do for fun?” Maggie asked.
We were all seated around the dinner table. Maggie had pulled out all the stops, somehow making a comfort meal seem extravagant. It was clear she wanted to make a good impression of her own on Jackie’s parents. She didn’t want Linda and Patrick to base their impressions of her off her residing in my home. I felt slightly guilty that the pack had already assumed she was my Luna, that I was simply hiding her away until I was ready.
“Well, I’m really into martial arts. I’d love to be a warrior some day like Victoria.” Jackie grinned.
“That is an admirable goal.” I assured her. “I expect you will have a much easier time than
RoryI made my way to the pack hospital via the public transportation system that ran through the entirety of Lucas’s pack lands. I had been pleased to see that he had implemented systems to help the less fortunate of his members get back and forth through the territory. Even Cerathe, for as large as it was, lacked in that area. The receptionist greeted me with a smile, leading me to the office they had lent me the day before. She winked when I noticed a name plate had been placed on the door, proudly displaying for the world to see that the office belonged to me. My heart swelled with joy knowing that the pack had readily accepted a stranger. They seemed to only care that I was an extra set of hands, willing to work to help the pack. “Doctor Stevens.” A petite nurse called, rapping her knuckles on the open door. “I hope you don’t mi
Selene Rory had cleared me to shift, advising me that it would complete whatever healing was left that could be achieved. I decided to wait until dark, if anyone from Cerathe was going to breech the border, it would happen than. I needed to flex more than just my wolf muscles, part of me wanted to know I still had what it took to be an assassin. I spent the afternoon and much of the evening with Alistair, working on our training plans for the five wolves we had selected. Lucas had agreed to mandate some form of training for all able-bodied wolves and, much to my displeasure, Alistair had accepted the responsibility for organizing it on my behalf as well. It made me regret not attending the meeting between my old leader and the Alpha, but I knew I wouldn’t have been able to face him so soon after suggesting he take the she-wolf l
I arrived at the training field just before four am. Alistair had been called away by Lucas to vet a new batch of refugees for intake. With the previous night’s attempt on his life, the Alpha wanted to ensure the wolves he accepted into the pack were really defectors, so I was on my own for the first day of training with the five pack warriors. Movement at the far end of the field caught my attention, I crouched, my senses on high alert. “Selene!” A male voice called, as he waved. “I’m Fenrick. Alistair asked us to join your training today. He thought you could use a hand with the new recruits.” I stood recognizing the name. Fenrick had been an infamous assassin, I was surprised to see he had defected to Mercius. Behind him was
EJ “You told me the Alpha, Alistair, and that failed assassin were dead!” King Jonas roared as he held me against the wall. He had summoned me shortly after breakfast and I now found myself gasping for air against the tight grasp he had on my throat. I fought the urge to claw at his hands, it would only anger him further. His words didn’t make sense to my oxygen deprived brain. It was clear he had discovered my deception about Alistair, but I had watched Selene die. The mate bond would have killed her Alpha as well. There was no way those two were still alive. “Your precious guild has taken too long to get me those lands.” He seethed. “Now my spy tells me that you have failed me in eliminating the Alpha. If it weren’t for the love I still held for your moth
Alistair“The group for intake is just in the conference room this way.” Alpha Lucas informed me. “Gerdie is out on a personal day today so I’m on my own.” I followed Lucas quietly. He had called me here for one reason. An assassin had crossed into his lands the night before and he had almost fallen for her trap. I was here to ensure none of the new intakes were current or former guild members. The Alpha was in a sour mood after the previous night’s attempted and wasn’t interested in the loyalties of assassins. I remained close behind him, glancing around at the faces in the crowded room, as he stormed to the small platform against the far wall. Most of the group were women and children with a handful of men disbursed throughout. My previous warning about his lack of security must have aff
Rory “I have the results of the kid’s tests.” I told Maggie as she sat across from my desk. I had called and arranged for her to meet me at the pack hospital after she had sent the children to school. Breaking bad news about her middle child wasn’t something I wanted to do in front of the child. “I am assuming the results aren’t great.” She sighed. “Not exactly. The good news is that Annabelle has the wolf gene, so when she comes of age, she will shift. Deven on the other hand, didn’t have the gene. I’m so sorry Maggie.” I said moving around the desk to sit beside her.&n
Lucas Zane had gotten word to the entire pack that training had been mandated within an hour. I was surprised to find that after two days of running signups, Selene and Alistair had just under eight hundred wolves organized into training times. By the third day after the announcement, training had started. I made my way to the field, having cleared my schedule for the day to help with the influx of new wolves. Alistair had informed me that the first day, he and Selene would be organizing each training group into their own subgroups based on the attention they needed to bring them up to par. It was something I needed to see for myself and it only made sense that the Alpha of the pack would train with them at least the first day. Selene had a keen eye.
I dropped Maggie at the pack hospital on my way to the office, though she seemed much more herself after she had showered and dressed for the day. I strode into the packhouse, adjusting my tie. The Alpha’s of my neighboring packs would be arriving later in the day to be filled on the situation with Cerathe. I had initially wanted to keep it to myself, let my pack handle the threat, but Zane had been adamant that all of the Mercian packs deserved to know that King Jonas was plotting to move against us. Gerdie wasn’t at her desk, having called out again to deal with a personal matter. I made a mental note to assign one of the warriors to greet the Alpha’s as they arrived. I smelled her as I reached the door to my office. The scent of apples and cinnamon filling my nostrils. Pushing the door open, I found Selene seated behind my desk wea
