Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
I carried my suitcase and walked past Jean, who looked deathly pale, as if she weren't even there. I left without a backward glance.

A resentful roar came from behind me just then. "Seth, you'd better actually have some guts this time and not stick to me afterward like a damn leech that won't let go!"

I'd thought we could part on amicable terms. I never imagined that Jean would do something utterly shameless afterward.

When my mom, Teresa Whitfield, heard I had broken up, she was determined to meet Jean in person. She wanted to see for herself what kind of woman could earn three years of my wholehearted devotion.

So, Mom went on a vacation, and as it happened, the hotel where she was staying was about to hold a recognition ceremony in honor of Jean's promotion to general manager.

As Solaris Group's principal shareholder, Mom wasn't required to attend a subsidiary's recognition ceremony. But she insisted on seeing Jean in person, and I couldn't talk her out of it.

"Mom, just so you know, today is only about giving Jean her letter of appointment. It's completely over between Jean and me, so don't mention anything else to her."

Mom looked at me intently, then lowered her head and grunted her agreement.

I was massaging her shoulders when our hotel room door suddenly burst open. A group of men stormed in and bolted the door from the inside.

Callum gave me a hollow smile. "When I ran into you at the hotel, something felt off. You barely scrape together a living, so how could you afford a place like this? It turns out you've been living off someone else, huh?"

He clicked his tongue. "You'd sell your dignity for a few bucks? That old rich lady looks old enough to be your mother."

A surge of anger rose in me. I was about to retort when the group of men suddenly rushed at me, knocking me to the floor and snatching my phone from my hand.

Callum stomped on my face with all his weight, his eyes full of mockery. "If Jean knew what scum you are, what do you think she'd do?"

Mom panicked and rushed forward to help me. "Stop! He's my son. You've misunderstood!"

Callum sneered with disgust, yanking Mom's hair and spitting on her face. "You're still shameless at your age."

He suddenly let go and gave a forceful shove.

Mom, caught completely off guard, fell to the floor, her head banging hard against the corner of the bed. Her face went pale from the pain.

Seeing Mom humiliated, I was seething with rage. I struggled with all my strength, but couldn't move an inch.

"Seth, why do you always act so high and mighty in front of me?" Callum lifted his foot and kicked me hard in the stomach.

I curled up, gritting my teeth. "Do you even know who my mother is? How dare you—"

"Still acting all tough? You were caught cheating right here at the hotel, and you're still denying it? I'll call Jean and the others so everyone can see your disgusting, pathetic face."

He smirked triumphantly as he dialed his phone.

Not long after, Jean came rushing over, holding up her skirt. She was shaking with anger. "Seth, I never expected this…"

Mom struggled to her feet, trying to speak and explain herself.

But Jean forcefully kicked Mom's hand away. "Don't touch me with your filthy hands, old hag."

Her pointed heels slammed into Mom's nose, and blood gushed instantly. Mom clutched her face, screaming in pain.

"Jean! Are you fucking insane?"

Rage boiled in my chest, like it might tear me apart. But the people behind me pinned my shoulders down, so I couldn't move an inch.

Frustration, resentment, and anger filled my chest, choking me. My breathing came in harsh, shallow gasps. I felt suffocated, ready to explode.

"You're the insane one. Was this on purpose? You knew today was my recognition ceremony, and you still brought this bitch here to ruin it, all because I wanted to break up with you!

"Listen, Seth—we're done! Drag these two shameless bastards out. Solaris Group's hotels don't allow filth like this."

Jean was furious as she barked orders at the others. Callum stood beside her, soothing her affectionately, his eyes locked on me with a mocking challenge.

I struggled violently against the group in a desperate attempt to pull their hands off Mom.

"What is going on here?"

At that moment, a deep, commanding voice rang out as a middle-aged man stepped in, his presence brooking no argument.

Jean immediately adopted a completely deferential posture, putting on a forced smile as she looked at him. "Mr. Langford, you're here."

The others in the room stiffened in place, bowing their heads and falling silent instantly. The noise in the room vanished, leaving only the sound of everyone's breathing.

Franklin Langford stared at me, his face showing both irritation and confusion. "Seth? What is this nonsense?"

I panted heavily, my eyes dark and fierce, and said something no one expected.

I came home late that night, only to jump in fright when a shadow suddenly sprang out from the bushes.Jean, hair disheveled and flying, rushed to me and threw herself at my legs, clinging to them as she wept."Seth, I was wrong. I was truly wrong. Please, I beg you—forgive me, will you? I swear from now on, I'll do whatever you say. I'll never go against you again. I love you. I really do. Don't leave me. Please, I'm begging you."I fixed her with an icy stare. "Jean, don't these words sound familiar? Back then, every time you threatened to break up, I begged you just like this. And what did I get in return?"You trampled on my dignity again and again. In the end, you even betrayed the love we shared. If that had been all, maybe we could have parted ways without it coming to this."But what you should never have done—the one thing beyond forgiveness—was the way you humiliated my mother that day. You have no idea. She knew we'd broken up, and still, she wanted to see you."She wa

I gathered all the clients I'd quietly steered to Jean over the years for a dinner at Lloyd Manor. It was my way of thanking them for their understanding and support. But only one person was missing—Mr. Hall, the raw materials supplier.I poured myself half a glass of wine, lowered my gaze, and asked in a low voice, "Does Mr. Hall have something urgent to attend to today?"Mr. Clark scoffed. "Urgent? What would he possibly be tied up with? Everyone here knows what he's like. No man's strong enough to resist a beautiful woman. Except that this woman is…"He gave me a hesitant look, then sent me a video. The footage was jaw-droppingly explicit. I never imagined that Jean, always so cool and aloof with me, could have a side this wanton.I quietly texted my assistant. "Find out where those two are right now."A moment later, a location pin came through. I forwarded it to someone else without a word. After a few perfunctory pleasantries, I excused myself and left the table. It was t

The midsummer weather was fickle. Though it was only midday, the sky suddenly turned dark.A heavy downpour came crashing down, and I walked along the estate's stone path beneath an umbrella. In the distance, I saw Jean kneeling on the ground, drenched and bedraggled. As I gave her a wide berth, she tilted her face up toward me, her eyes a mix of defiance and desperate pleading. I pretended not to see her and stepped into the pavilion. My client, Mr. Clark, came forward with a smile plastered across his face. "Well, now, I said I'd call on Ms. Whitfield myself. What made you come all this way?"I lifted my chin slightly, my gaze drifting toward Jean in silent inquiry.Seeing that, Mr. Clark sneered. "An ingrate like her deserves a lesson. If you hadn't insisted I hand over all those orders back then, would she even have a place in Solaris Group today? And after what she's done, she still has the gall to ask why I haven't signed off next quarter's orders for her."Mr. Clark gestur

I pressed on. "All these years, Solaris Group has paid you no less than tens of millions in salary, and this is how you repay us. Or have you been disloyal all along, never even caring to remain with Solaris Group?"Franklin's legs gave out, and with a heavy thud, he fell to his knees before me, landing hard. He slapped himself twice, viciously. "I was blind. I didn't even recognize Ms. Whitfield."Jean darted over, a sycophantic smile plastered on her face. "Seth, how's Teresa? I've been meaning to visit her, but work's kept me so busy. Otherwise, none of this would've happened."This is all Callum's fault. Yes, it must be him. He's the one trying to undermine our relationship."She grabbed my hand, her eyes reddening with feigned grievance, and her face arranged into a mask of wounded innocence. "You're not angry with me, are you?"Seeing her like that, a sick churn rose in my stomach. All these years, just to keep this relationship alive, I kept giving in, kept compromising, an

I roared, "Franklin, is this how you usually manage your subordinates? Letting them humiliate hotel guests indiscriminately, without any restraint?"Franklin was taken aback. He was about to say something when Callum stepped forward and slapped me hard across the face."How dare you even say Mr. Langford's name?"He then turned around, wearing an ingratiating smile aimed at Franklin. "Sorry for the offense. Mr. Lloyd is rotten to the core, and I didn't want him tarnishing the hotel's reputation, so I was discreetly kicking them out."Callum looked anxious as he barked orders at the security staff. "What are you waiting for? Drag these two out through the service elevator. Make sure they don't bother the other guests."I burst out, "Franklin, open your damn eyes and take a good look! The person lying on the floor is Teresa Whitfield, Solaris Group's chairwoman!"The room instantly fell silent, everyone staring at one another in shock.Franklin, who had been heading for the door,
