Senna’s POV

We all stood, staring back at the man who had bought us as slaves. Our derision was palpable.

Kalev’s eyes swept over us. When they landed on me, my breath hitched in my throat.

He had the most unusual eyes I’d ever seen, a glimmering silver-grey. His gaze held for a second too long, but then it moved on.

Turning away from us, he spoke to Elvin, who I assumed was a steward of some sort.

“The Game begins in three days. Ensure they are physically fit for island deployment.” His voice was steady and controlled.

“Of course, Master Kalev,” Elvin responded.

My heart clutched.

Game?

A cold weight settled in my stomach. My mind raced, piecing it all together. We weren’t being inspected for labour. We were being inspected to participate in the…

…the Slave Games?

The realization ripped through me, sharp like a razor blade.

We weren’t brought here to work. We were brought here to die! To fight for our lives on some island, all in the name of entertainment.

I’d heard about the Slave Games. Everyone had. But our district was so far removed from them. Only the elite classes watched. Our district was too poor for televisions and frivolous things like entertainment.

Clenching my fists, my anger flared.

Before I could stop myself, I lunged forward, stepping out of line. My anger cut through my shock.

“That’s why you brought us here?” I seethed. “The Moon Goddess will punish you!” I spat out, my cheeks flushed red. “She punishes every werewolf who treats human life as worthless!”

The reaction was immediate. Guards moved toward me, hands already reaching for their weapons. One of them grabbed my arm, wrenching it behind my back. I twisted instinctively, but he tossed me down to the ground like I was a rag doll.

I covered my head with my hands and braced myself for the blow.

“Stop.”

Kalev’s voice ripped through the air, halting the guards. Turning myself over, I scrambled onto my butt, my eyes wide as Kalev approached me.

“Stand up,” Kalev demanded, his voice low. I rose to my feet. He reached out and gripped my chin, forcing me to meet his gaze.

I didn’t look away. His eyes studied mine with hard precision. Then he released my chin.

“You’re brave,” he said.

But it didn’t sound like praise.

Breathing heavily, I glared back at him.

“You’re an Empty Shell. You won’t make it far. But I’m curious to see how your bravery serves in the game.”

“This is wrong,” I replied. “We’re people. Not entertainment.”

The flicker of something crossed his face. Guilt? Sympathy? I wasn’t sure. Because before I could fully make sense of it, he turned away from me.

“The rules are simple,” Kalev said, pacing in front of his. His shoes clicked loudly against the hardwood floor. "You will all be dropped on an island. Supply stations will open up every three days. It’s first come, first served.”

All around me, the other slaves averted their eyes. The woman next to me wrung her hands. Kalev continued.

“You may use any resource you find. You may form alliances as you see fit. The broadcast will be open to all Capital nobility. Your goal is to be the last one standing. Elimination is considered…” He paused, his hand poised at his chin, “Natural selection.”

Natural selection?

The words landed on us. We all held a collective breath for a beat.

“You mean…we have to…kill each other?” The woman who was wringing her hands gasped. A ripple of whispers broke out.

“What do we win?”

The man’s question broke through the shocked whispers. All eyes turned to him. He was thickly built, his glare hard.

A smile tugged at the corner of Kalev’s lips.

“A new life,” Kalev replied. “The last survivor will receive a free identity document and the right of residency in District 3. As well as a large sum of money.”

Listening carefully, I pieced it all together. First come, first served resources meant we’d have to fight each other for them. Alliances meant betrayal was expected and encouraged. And of course there was a prize. Motivation. A reason to do the unthinkable and kill each other off.

My blood froze as the enormity of the situation washed over me.

This wasn’t just a game; this was a veritable blood bath.

I clenched my jaw, my anger simmering beneath the surface.

Kalev turned to leave. But before he did, he waved his hand in the air.

“Good luck,” he said, his tone as flat as the floor we were standing on.

From there, we were moved to a guarded holding area. It was a big room with plenty of space for us all. We were fed a decadent dinner of roasted chicken and savory vegetables. I choked it down. Even though I had no appetite, I knew I needed the strength.

It was sometime after dinner that I noticed him. His large frame was hunkered down in the corner of the room beside a small boy who was maybe eleven or twelve.

He was the man who had asked what we will win.

The boy beside him was visibly shaking, his face pale. The large man passed the boy his portion of cake we’d been given for dessert.

“Take it,” the man said gently. Then he saw me watching him and motioned for me to come over.

“That was very brave, what you did,” the man said. “I’m Tor. From District 5.”

District 5 was the mining district, which would explain Tor’s muscular build.

“Senna,” I replied, settling down in front of them.

“This is Kulos,” Tor said.

The boy’s knees were drawn up to his chest. He balanced the plate of cake on his knees, trembling so badly I was sure the cake would slide right off the plate. Tor leaned in and whispered, “Poor thing is terrified.”

“I don’t blame him,” I said. “Why did you give him your cake?”

“Why not?” Tor shrugged. “I’m trying to comfort him.”

“But we’re all enemies now, aren’t we? Isn’t that the purpose of the Slave Games?”

Tor scrunched up his face and exhaled slowly. “Perhaps,” he said, his voice wistful. “But we can still choose how to act. I choose to be a decent person.”

There was something about Tor that I instantly liked. His large, gruff body was in direct contrast to his soft nature. He was the definition of a gentle giant.

Glancing around the room, I took inventory of the people around us.

Some of them looked hardened, like they wouldn’t hesitate to kill. Others looked scared, like they were caught in some sort of bad dream they couldn’t wake up from. And others still were expressionless, lost in their own thoughts, scheming, planning, praying.

There were weak people in the room. They’d be picked off quickly. There were strong people in the room. They’d be the pickers.

I was somewhere in the middle I figured. I had skills. I was raised with a bow and arrow in hand. I could forage. I could hunt.

And I was no stranger to survival.

Several groups of people were huddled together, talking in hushed whispers. They glanced over their shoulders to make sure no one was listening.

“Alliances are already forming,” I told Tor.

“Yes, they are,” Tor replied, the twinkle of a smile in his eye. I understood the subtext.

Without even meaning to, I’d just formed my own pseudo-alliance.

With a massive miner from District 5 and a terrified young boy with a plate of cake on his knee.

They weren’t the strongest nor the weakest in the room.

But they were decent.

And that was good enough for me.

  • The Awakening of Slave   Chapter 70: The Tavern

Senna’s POVThe tavern stood where the old supply depot used to be. I stopped at the edge of the street for a moment, taking it in. It hadn’t been here before. The structure was new. I noticed the new wood, the new supports. I could smell the fresh coat of paint. The windows were larger than most buildings in Sector 6. From the outside it looked like a really nice tavern. This had always been his dream, to open up a bar. He’d told me about it countless times. It was something we’d talked about doing together. It was the reason I was saving all my money. So I could help him fulfil his dreams. But by the looks of it, he’d come and done it without me. With my money. And with my best friend.I seethed.Kalev appeared beside me.“He’s in there?” Kalev asked in a low growl.“Yes,” I replied.“Then let’s go.” Kalev made a move to enter the tavern, but I stopped him. Kalev wanted to rip Kalen to shreds. I could feel his anger coming off of him. But I wanted to do this alone. This was my fight

  • The Awakening of Slave   Chapter 69: Sector 6

Senna’s POVSector 6 looked smaller than I remembered. I noticed it at we approached. From the transport window, the familiar sprawl of uneven rooftops and narrow, dirt-packed streets stretched out in front of us. But it no longer felt endless. Was this really the place I’d grown up in? It felt like a lifetime had passed since I’d been taken from here and put on that bus with all the other participants.I wasn’t the same person anymore. No. I was stronger. More confident. And thanks to this victory tour, I had the eyes and ears of all the sectors. I could leverage that to do something important. Something meaningful.“It used to feel bigger,” I said to Kalev. He flashed me a sympathetic smile, but he didn’t say anything. What could he say? He couldn’t possibly understand the flurry of emotions inside of me as we approached my home. They had cleared a section near the central square had been marked off for the arrival. People had gathered to watch. Well, not just watch. They were there

  • The Awakening of Slave   Chapter 68: The Victory Tour Begins

Senna’s POV“I’m not bringing him.” The refusal left my mouth. It came out sharper than I’d intended. So sharp that even the servants near the walls stiffened.Kalev didn’t react. His face remained gentle.“You are,” he said calmly.“No, I am not,” I replied firmly.“Yes, Senna, you are,” he replied. We stood across from each other in the center of the sitting room. Late afternoon light spilled through the windows. Our night of passion had changed things between us. I quivered whenever I thought about it. I’d given myself over to him in that bed.But we weren’t in bed right now. We were in the sitting room. And what happened in the bedroom stayed in the bedroom. In the light of day, we were just as we’d always been. And right now, there was tension between us.“This is my tour,” I said. “So it’s my choice.”“And you are my responsibility,” Kalev replied. His voice softened. He reached out brushed my cheek with his hand. “I am coming to protect you.”“I don’t need your protection,” I s

  • The Awakening of Slave   Chapter 67: Passion

Senna’s POVLaying beside Kalev, I couldn’t sleep. I could hear him breathing beside me. I tossed and turned. The silk sheets were soft against my skin. A breeze blew in from the window. I knew I should try to sleep. But I just couldn’t. Verity paced inside of me. Orrin’s presence was keeping her up too.“I know you’re awake,” he said. His voice startled me. I’d thought he was asleep. I froze, not knowing what to say. For five nights we’d slept like this, side by side. I’d been careful to stick to my side of the bed. But truth be told, I hadn’t been sleeping well. Not with him beside me.The matebond was getting stronger by the day. Whenever I was near him, I could feel it throbbing inside of me. It was an aching, a desire that threatened to consume me whole.Lying there next to him, the heat from the bond pulsed between us. I swallowed hard. He was shirtless and I was painfully aware of his body next to mine.“You can feel it,” he said. “The matebond. Look at me.”I rolled over onto

  • The Awakening of Slave   Chapter 66: The Flicker

Kalev’s POVViktor chose the location. The hunting grounds stretched along the northern edge of the Capital’s territory. They were a carefully maintained wilderness designed to feel dangerous without really being so. The trees stood tall and evenly spaced, while preserving the illusion of untouched land. The paths were subtle but deliberate. The nobility went there to hunt pretend they were surviving something wild. But even the animals here were controlled.Every animal was tracked. They were specially bred. They were released in calculated numbers to guarantee they could be hunted with certainty. It was all smoke and mirrors, although none of the nobility actually openly recognized this.“It’s been a while,” Viktor said as we stepped onto the main trail. The morning air was cool. It carried the sharp scent of pine and damp earth. Sunlight filtered through the trees in pale strips.“Yes,” I replied.Viktor had asked me to go hunting. I’d almost refused. But then I decided to go. Mayb

  • The Awakening of Slave   Chapter 65: Victor Privileges

Senna’s POVThe paperwork arrived in a box. I was sitting at the dining room table nibbling on fresh fruit when the servant came in.It wasn’t a folder or a thin stack of documents tied neatly with ribbon. It was an actual box. It was large enough that the servant carrying it had to brace it both hands. He entered without meeting my eyes and set it carefully on the table in front of me.“Victor privileges,” he said stiffly. Then he left before I could answer. The door clicked shut behind him. I set down my fruit and stared at the box for a long time.It looked expensive. It was made out of dark polished wood with brass corners. The crest of the Capital carved neatly into the lid. Verity stirred uneasily beneath my skin.“I don’t like it,” she said.“I know,” I muttered.Slowly, I lifted the lid.Inside, the documents were arranged with care. They were separated into sections by thin dividers. Every page was crisp. Someone had spent a lot of time making this look clean. It was all very

Senna’s POVI woke up in a bed that was too soft. That was the first thing I noticed. I didn’t notice the ceiling above me, or the quiet. I didn’t notice the unfamiliar scent of something clean and floral.I noticed the bed.It was so comfortable and lush, like being on a cloud. That’s how I knew I

Kalev’s POVI hated that they sedated her. They did it before I could interject. They just shoved a needle into her neck and within seconds, she collapsed.“She was hysterical,” one of the medics on the helicopter said. It was true. She had been. She’d been hyperventilating. They’d acted on instinc

Senna’s POVI glared at Kalev. The horns didn’t stop. They kept echoing across the beach, piercing our ears. • The Awakening of Slave   Chapter 48: Override

Kalev’s POVI grabbed Senna’s wrist just in time. My voice had stopped everyone else mid-reach. Holding onto to Senna’ wrist, everyone whipped their heads at me.I had no idea what would happen if Senna touched that Spire. But my instincts told me it wouldn’t be good. Orrin agreed. Now that I knew
