INICIAR SESIÓNSenna’s POV
The helicopter hovered precariously close to the vast expanse of ocean. So close, that it caused the water below us to ripple.
In the distance, we saw the island. From our vantage point, it looked like a tropical paradise, with white sand beaches and azure waters.
We all knew the truth though.
The island wasn’t a paradise; it was the gates to hell.
Suddenly, the helicopter doors opened.
“Move!” One of the guards shouted.
Confused, we all paused.
“I said, MOVE!” he repeated. Then he grabbed the person closest to the door and shoved him out.
They weren’t even going to land on the island. They were just going to toss us out, one by one, into the ocean.
When it was my turn, I readied myself to jump.
But the guard shoved me. Hurling through the air, I hit the water hard. It slammed into me like cement, knocking the wind out of me. I sunk beneath the surface, and for a split second, everything went silent.
Then instinct took over. Kicking hard, I forced my body upwards until I broke through the surface with one sharp gasp.
All around me, chaos erupted. People splashed, shouted, panicked. Scanning the bobbing bodies, my eyes found Thor. He was making his way to the shore, his arm wrapped around Kulos, who was on his back.
“Stay calm,” I chastised myself. “Get to the shore. Swim, Senna. Swim.”
The cold water made the swim to the shore feel endless. My muscles burned and my lungs ached.
“Some of us won’t make it,” I thought to myself. “They’re gonna drown out here.”
But I forced the thought of out my head, my eyes fixed on dry land. That wasn’t my problem. I had to get to the island.
When my feet finally hit sand, I push myself forward, stumbling out of the water, my heart racing. Three people in front of me bolted for the trees, desperate to get out of the open.
I didn’t.
Instead, I took a steadying breath and assessed.
The ground beneath my boots was damp, damp enough to hold tracks. To my left, I heard the faint sound of running water. A creek maybe? A fresh water source. The forest in front of me was dense, the foliage thick.
Thick enough to provide cover.
To my right were small structures, like little wooden stages. ‘That’s where they’ll drop the supplies’, I realized. Towering out of the island was a large mountain, with white rock cliffs.
“Senna! Go!”
Thor’s voice broke out from the shore. He was dragging Kulos along, across the sand. Spinning around, I saw three people emerging from the water. Their eyes were locked on me. They had wolves. I could feel it.
An alliance. A small pack of three.
They hadn’t even left the water yet and they were already hunting.
I made a mad dash for the forest. Just as I approached the tree line, I heard it. A terrified, gut-wrenching scream. Pausing, my body trembled. The scream was followed by the unmistakable sound of flesh tearing and bones crunching.
One person down.
Already.
Darting into the forest, I caught up with Thor and Kulos. Kulos was bleeding. He tripped and sliced open his knee. The scent of his blood made us a target. We had to get out of there.
“Where do we go?” Thor asked, his eyes panicked.
“High ground,” I replied quickly. “Come on. Up the mountain. I saw some cliffs as we were coming in. If we can get up there, we’ll only have to defend one side. It will buy us some time while we tend to Kulos.”
Nodding, Thor swallowed hard.
Then he hefted Kulos onto his shoulder and we ran.

Kalev’s POV
“Two dead already?” Viktor scoffed at the at the large screen. My eyes stay fixated on the broadcast. “At this rate, the games won’t last a week.” He turned to face everyone and feigned a pout. “That’s no fun.”
Viktor strut across the room, his wine glass in hand and sunk down into the oversized sofa. The room was full of the city’s nobility. The games had just begun, and while they lasted, these same people would be gathered here, watching the games unfold with rapt attention.
I suppressed my urge to scowl at Viktor. He was crass and uncouth. He enjoyed the games more than anyone, blatantly cheering with each death.
It was true. The games had been on for less than three hours and two were already dead. One never made it out of the water. We watched her drown in real time.
And the other? She was attacked right on the shore by a pack of three. Her blood stained the white sand. Her body was still there, in pieces.
The feed bounced around from contestant to contestant. They’d all dispersed to various areas of the island. This was the way it always went on the first day. Everyone ran. Everyone hid. Very few hunted. Not yet. Not until things became more desperate.
Just then, the feed landed on a young woman. Behind her, a man and a young boy were perched on a cliff. She was making some sort of trap out of leaves and twigs.
“What is that she doing?” Viktor said, leaning forward with an amused smile.
“Senna,” I said, my tone flat. “Her name is Senna. She’s from District 6.”
“Oh,” Viktor chuckled, turning to me. He shook his finger. “She’s the one who yelled at you? Right? At your estate. Feisty little thing. The bitch is an Empty Shell though. She won’t last two days.”
I didn’t reply. My eyes followed her on the screen. She seemed to know what she was doing. She moved with a confidence that I found alluring.
Dark was descending on the island and the contestants started settling in.
“Well,” Viktor said, slapping his hand on his knees. “No point in watching them sleep.” He stood up to leave, but before he did, his eyes landed on me.
“We still haven’t received your RSVP, Kalev. For my sister’s birthday party?”
Leaning back in my chair, I slung one arm over the back of it and crossed my legs.
“That’s because I haven’t replied,” I said off-handedly.
“Hm,” Viktor said, eying me up and down. “Well perhaps you should. Twenty-six and no mate in sight. There will be plenty of eligible she-wolves at the party. Unless….you’re cursed by the Moon Goddess?”
He was trying to get a rise out of me. It didn’t work. I didn’t give a rat’s ass what Viktor thought of me.
So instead of taking his bait, I smiled dangerously.
“True,” I said. “I don’t have a mate. But if you’re so concerned about it, I could take yours.”
Viktor opened his mouth to reply, but then wisely closed it. He said nothing else as he exited the room, along with the majority of the other nobles.
I stayed. The feed was still on Senna. Her hands worked quickly with the traps, even in the descending darkness. I had no idea why, but I couldn’t peel my eyes away from her.
Even though I knew, without a wolf, she’d be dead within a week.
Senna’s POVThe tavern stood where the old supply depot used to be. I stopped at the edge of the street for a moment, taking it in. It hadn’t been here before. The structure was new. I noticed the new wood, the new supports. I could smell the fresh coat of paint. The windows were larger than most buildings in Sector 6. From the outside it looked like a really nice tavern. This had always been his dream, to open up a bar. He’d told me about it countless times. It was something we’d talked about doing together. It was the reason I was saving all my money. So I could help him fulfil his dreams. But by the looks of it, he’d come and done it without me. With my money. And with my best friend.I seethed.Kalev appeared beside me.“He’s in there?” Kalev asked in a low growl.“Yes,” I replied.“Then let’s go.” Kalev made a move to enter the tavern, but I stopped him. Kalev wanted to rip Kalen to shreds. I could feel his anger coming off of him. But I wanted to do this alone. This was my fight
Senna’s POVSector 6 looked smaller than I remembered. I noticed it at we approached. From the transport window, the familiar sprawl of uneven rooftops and narrow, dirt-packed streets stretched out in front of us. But it no longer felt endless. Was this really the place I’d grown up in? It felt like a lifetime had passed since I’d been taken from here and put on that bus with all the other participants.I wasn’t the same person anymore. No. I was stronger. More confident. And thanks to this victory tour, I had the eyes and ears of all the sectors. I could leverage that to do something important. Something meaningful.“It used to feel bigger,” I said to Kalev. He flashed me a sympathetic smile, but he didn’t say anything. What could he say? He couldn’t possibly understand the flurry of emotions inside of me as we approached my home. They had cleared a section near the central square had been marked off for the arrival. People had gathered to watch. Well, not just watch. They were there
Senna’s POV“I’m not bringing him.” The refusal left my mouth. It came out sharper than I’d intended. So sharp that even the servants near the walls stiffened.Kalev didn’t react. His face remained gentle.“You are,” he said calmly.“No, I am not,” I replied firmly.“Yes, Senna, you are,” he replied. We stood across from each other in the center of the sitting room. Late afternoon light spilled through the windows. Our night of passion had changed things between us. I quivered whenever I thought about it. I’d given myself over to him in that bed.But we weren’t in bed right now. We were in the sitting room. And what happened in the bedroom stayed in the bedroom. In the light of day, we were just as we’d always been. And right now, there was tension between us.“This is my tour,” I said. “So it’s my choice.”“And you are my responsibility,” Kalev replied. His voice softened. He reached out brushed my cheek with his hand. “I am coming to protect you.”“I don’t need your protection,” I s
Senna’s POVLaying beside Kalev, I couldn’t sleep. I could hear him breathing beside me. I tossed and turned. The silk sheets were soft against my skin. A breeze blew in from the window. I knew I should try to sleep. But I just couldn’t. Verity paced inside of me. Orrin’s presence was keeping her up too.“I know you’re awake,” he said. His voice startled me. I’d thought he was asleep. I froze, not knowing what to say. For five nights we’d slept like this, side by side. I’d been careful to stick to my side of the bed. But truth be told, I hadn’t been sleeping well. Not with him beside me.The matebond was getting stronger by the day. Whenever I was near him, I could feel it throbbing inside of me. It was an aching, a desire that threatened to consume me whole.Lying there next to him, the heat from the bond pulsed between us. I swallowed hard. He was shirtless and I was painfully aware of his body next to mine.“You can feel it,” he said. “The matebond. Look at me.”I rolled over onto
Kalev’s POVViktor chose the location. The hunting grounds stretched along the northern edge of the Capital’s territory. They were a carefully maintained wilderness designed to feel dangerous without really being so. The trees stood tall and evenly spaced, while preserving the illusion of untouched land. The paths were subtle but deliberate. The nobility went there to hunt pretend they were surviving something wild. But even the animals here were controlled.Every animal was tracked. They were specially bred. They were released in calculated numbers to guarantee they could be hunted with certainty. It was all smoke and mirrors, although none of the nobility actually openly recognized this.“It’s been a while,” Viktor said as we stepped onto the main trail. The morning air was cool. It carried the sharp scent of pine and damp earth. Sunlight filtered through the trees in pale strips.“Yes,” I replied.Viktor had asked me to go hunting. I’d almost refused. But then I decided to go. Mayb
Senna’s POVThe paperwork arrived in a box. I was sitting at the dining room table nibbling on fresh fruit when the servant came in.It wasn’t a folder or a thin stack of documents tied neatly with ribbon. It was an actual box. It was large enough that the servant carrying it had to brace it both hands. He entered without meeting my eyes and set it carefully on the table in front of me.“Victor privileges,” he said stiffly. Then he left before I could answer. The door clicked shut behind him. I set down my fruit and stared at the box for a long time.It looked expensive. It was made out of dark polished wood with brass corners. The crest of the Capital carved neatly into the lid. Verity stirred uneasily beneath my skin.“I don’t like it,” she said.“I know,” I muttered.Slowly, I lifted the lid.Inside, the documents were arranged with care. They were separated into sections by thin dividers. Every page was crisp. Someone had spent a lot of time making this look clean. It was all very
Senna’s POVWe left the cave early in the morning to find a better spot. Since everyone was scared of my silver mark, and we’d made a truce with Korrigan’s pack, we decided to go back to the ridge. It sounded silly, but returning to the ridge felt a little like returning home. It was the only famil
Kalev’s POVThe main room cleared at midnight. Everyone went out to drink and gossip about the day’s events. I sent the night techs out by telling them I needed the floor. They went gratefully.Endrick and I were able to open the sealed records. He didn’t have the right key. Since the records had
Senna’s POVBy the next morning, the whole Island knew I’d been marked.I didn't know how. The feeds had been dark and we’d been covered by the dome of briars. The only people who saw Kalev Moren walk out of those thorns were me, Thor, and Kulos. But somehow, they knew. The mark was fully silvere
Kalev’s POVI was gone for a total of twenty-eight minutes. As I sat back down in my seat, the feed came back up. Viktor was at my side before I’d even taken a full breath."Terrain anomaly," he said, clicking his chin. He leaned against the back of my chair with his arms folded. "Is that's what we
