The CEO’s Nightmare

The executive floor of Sterling Enterprises was built on silence, precision, and multi-billion-dollar deals.

Until four-year-old Toby Sterling decided to declare war.

Clara Mercer didn't even look up from her dual monitors as the blaring alarm cut through the floor's quiet atmosphere. Instead, her fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard, finishing the preliminary summary for the upcoming European merger. She was twenty-four, held a master’s degree in international business, and had spent two years becoming the most indispensable Executive Assistant Damon Sterling had ever hired.

She knew the layout of his schedule down to the second. She also knew that the emergency siren currently deafening the top three floors wasn't a fire.

It was a toddler.

"Miss Mercer!"

The frantic voice belonged to Brenda, the fifth elite nanny hired by the Sterling estate in the last two months. The woman burst into Clara's spotless reception area, her high-end designer suit soaked from head to toe, mascara streaming down her cheeks.

"I can't do this! He’s a monster! A miniature, ruthless tyrant!" Brenda sobbed, shaking violently. "He jammed a juice box into the private server room's maintenance panel and triggered the internal sprinkler system! Mr. Sterling is going to fire me—or sue me!"

"Mr. Sterling doesn't sue domestic staff, Brenda. He simply ruins their references," Clara replied, her voice cool, steady, and entirely unfazed. She picked up a pristine linen towel from her desk drawer—always prepared—and handed it over. "Pack your belongings. My office will wire your severance by noon."

Before Brenda could reply, the heavy double doors of the boardroom slammed open.

The temperature in the hallway plummeted instantly.

Damon Sterling stepped into the corridor. At thirty-one, the CEO of Sterling Enterprises was an imposing figure—six-foot-two, wrapped in a bespoke Italian suit, with sharp facial features that looked carved from granite. His dark eyes, usually cold and calculating enough to freeze board members in their seats, were currently flashing with lethal irritation.

Behind him, four terrified board members hovered, holding wet documents.

"Mercer," Damon’s voice dropped like a gavel, resonant and dangerous. "Explain to me why my foreign investors are currently standing under a localized monsoon in my own building."

Clara stood up smoothly, smoothing down her tailored navy pencil skirt. "A minor security breach in Sector 4, Mr. Sterling. The situation is being contained."

"Contained?" Damon stepped closer, his presence overwhelming the space between them. A faint scent of cedar and expensive cologne hit her senses, but Clara kept her gaze locked onto his with practiced neutrality. "Where is he?"

From behind Clara’s desk, a small head popped up.

Toby Sterling possessed his father’s dark hair and piercing blue eyes, but his expression was pure, unadulterated mischief. He was holding an empty apple juice box like a trophy, his tiny designer shoes dripping onto Clara’s spotless hardwood floor.

"I didn't like the wet lady," Toby announced casually, pointing a chubby finger at Brenda. "She smelled like old flowers and tried to read me a baby book. I am four and a half. I read financial reports."

Damon pinched the bridge of his nose, exhaling a breath that could have frosted glass. "Toby. We discussed this. You were supposed to sit quietly until my 2:00 PM briefing."

"Your briefing is boring, Daddy. And so are your nannies," Toby pouted, crossing his little arms. Then, his eyes shifted away from Damon and landed directly on Clara.

The boy’s expression changed instantly. The little tyrant vanished, replaced by an unnervingly bright smile.

Damon turned his sharp glare toward Clara. "Mercer, call the agency. Tell them to send another candidate immediately."

"The agency has already placed us on a temporary freeze, Mr. Sterling," Clara replied smoothly, checking her tablet. "This is the third nanny Toby has driven out this week. They require forty-eight hours to vet a new high-security candidate."

Damon’s jaw clenched. "I have a flight to London in twelve hours. The Vance acquisition depends on this week’s negotiations. I cannot manage a multi-billion-dollar buyout while my son dismantles my headquarters."

Silence stretched over the executive floor. The boardroom executives looked like they wanted to vanish through the floorboards.

Clara took a quiet step forward, crouching down so she was at eye level with the four-year-old menace. She didn't use a fake, sweet tone. She spoke to him exactly as she spoke to his father.

"Toby," Clara said softly, her brown eyes bright and steady. "You jammed a foil straw into an optical sensor, didn't you?"

Toby’s eyes widened slightly. "Maybe."

"That sensor controls the secondary cooling grid for the mainframes," Clara continued, raising an eyebrow. "If the servers overheat, the building's emergency protocol locks down the candy dispenser in the cafeteria. For twenty-four hours."

Toby’s jaw dropped. "It does?"

"It does," Clara lied without batting an eye. "Which means your sabotage just cost you your afternoon chocolate chip cookie."

Toby stared at her, thoroughly baffled. No nanny had ever explained his pranks using technical logic before. They usually just screamed or cried.

Slowly, Toby reached out and took Clara’s hand, his small, sticky fingers wrapping securely around hers. He looked up at his father with absolute, immovable determination.

"I don't want a new nanny, Daddy," Toby declared, his small voice echoing across the silent floor. "I want Miss Mercer to live with us."

Damon froze. His dark eyes snapped from his son's hand to Clara’s face.

Clara’s heart did a strange, sudden flutter against her ribs, but her professional mask didn't slip for a single second. "That is outside my job description, Toby."

Damon didn't break eye contact with Clara. A dark, dangerous glint sparked in his eyes as he took a step closer, towering over her.

"Is it, Miss Mercer?" Damon whispered, his voice low enough that only she could hear. "Because right now, you are the only person in this building he hasn't destroyed.”

  • The Baby Matchmaker    The Boardroom Blitz

The silence lingering around the western colonnade was far louder than the resurgent roar of the surrounding ballroom. It was thick, toxic, and centered entirely on the three people standing just outside the shimmering chandelier light.Victoria Vance stood frozen, her polished mask of arrogance cracking to reveal a standard, raw fury. Her gaze was locked onto Clara’s throat—specifically, onto the hundreds of carats of Sterling family history that were currently reflecting the Plaza’s lights with blinding arrogance. The diamonds were not just jewelry; they were a statement. A statement that Clara Mercer, the lowly secretary who had ruined Victoria’s perfectly timed ambush, was currently wearing the very jewels Victoria had spent three years positioning herself to claim.Damon didn't speak immediately. He couldn't. He was still processing the sight of her. The black gown was elegant, powerful, and utterly professional, yet it somehow managed to emphasize the soft warmth of her skin far

  • The Baby Matchmaker    The Price of Presence

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was not just a venue; it was a carefully constructed vortex designed to concentrate old money, raw power, and the terrifying energy of desperate ambition into one single, shimmering space. Tonight, for the Annual Wall Street Summer Gala, it was operating at peak capacity. A thousand high-society couples, the undisputed titans of the financial world and their beautifully manicured spouses, swirled under the colossal crystal chandeliers. Their faces were animated masks of polished, blinding civility, and the low roar of their collective conversation was louder than the twenty-piece chamber orchestra struggling to be heard from the balcony. It was, by every metric, the most high-stakes, ruthless corporate environment on the planet. And Damon Sterling hated every single second of it.He stood near the western marble colonnade, his six-foot-two frame imposing even in a room filled with powerful men. He had shed the morning’s work attire for a tailored

  • The Baby Matchmaker    The Dress Code

The humidity of the Long Island morning had been replaced by the ruthless climate control of the Sterling Enterprises executive floor. Inside Damon’s corner office, the air was crisp, silent, and smelled faintly of expensive leather and ozone from the server racks.Clara stood across the obsidian desk, having just concluded her thirty-minute brief on the Vance Logistics acquisition hurdles. Her charcoal pencil skirt was immaculate, her ivory blouse crisp. Every hair from this morning’s French twist failure had been tamed back into a sleek, professional coil.Damon had been working on two screens simultaneously since they arrived, his navy suit jacket draped over his chair, sleeves rolled past his forearms. He hadn't mentioned the study trap, the proximity, or his whispered warning from the hallway a single time in five hours."Vance is pushing the closing date," Damon murmured, tapping a pen against his chin as he stared at a spreadsheet. "He wants to wait until after the Summer Gala

  • The Baby Matchmaker    The Morning After

Dawn broke over Long Island in thin, pale rays of silver, cutting through the shattered storm clouds and washing across the polished dark hardwood of the private study. Outside the floor-to-ceiling storm windows, the wild ocean gale that had battered the estate all night had finally subsided into a soft, monotonous drizzle. The heavy electronic deadbolt on the double oak doors clicked open with a soft, mechanical chirp as the mansion’s primary power grid hummed back to life. High above in the ceiling alcoves, hidden ambient LED lights flared from pitch black to a soft, warm amber.Inside, the sudden restoration of light was almost blinding.Clara stirred on the broad leather sofa, her eyelids fluttering open slowly against the glare. She wasn't cold. In fact, she felt completely cocooned, surrounded by a wall of radiating, steady warmth. It took her brain precisely three seconds to register her surroundings—and when it did, every nerve ending in her body went on high alert. She was tu

  • The Baby Matchmaker    The Trap is Set

The rain began as a low murmur against the glass floor-to-ceiling windows of the Sterling Estate, but by midnight, it had escalated into a full-scale deluge. Thunder shook the heavy foundation of the house, rattling the crystal decanters sitting on the private study’s dark mahogany sideboard.Inside the study, the atmosphere was suffocatingly warm.Clara sat at the leather conference table, surrounded by three stacks of binding financial disclosures for the Vance Logistics acquisition. Her jacket was draped over the back of her chair. Her top blouse button had come undone sometime around eleven, and a few loose strands of hair had escaped her French twist, framing her face.Across from her, Damon had shed his jacket and tie hours ago. His dark dress shirt was unbuttoned at the neck, his sleeves rolled tightly around his forearms as he scrawled red corrections across a legal brief."Section 4.2 is a trap," Clara murmured, her voice thick with late-night exhaustion. She tapped her table

  • The Baby Matchmaker    The Little Mastermind

The sun had barely crested the tree line surrounding the Sterling Estate when Clara stepped down into the sunlit marble dining room. She was back in her professional armor—a crisp ivory silk blouse, a charcoal pencil skirt, and her hair swept up into a flawless French twist. If her pulse had thundered out of control in the dark corridor ten hours ago, her face showed absolutely no trace of it.Damon was already at the head of the long mahogany table. He looked infuriatingly immaculate in a dark charcoal suit, sipping black coffee while scrolling through market updates on his tablet. The damp-haired, bare-chested ghost from midnight had completely vanished, replaced once again by the cold, unreachable CEO of Sterling Enterprises."Good morning, Mr. Sterling," Clara said smoothly, taking her seat three chairs down."Mercer," Damon acknowledged without looking up from his screen. "The car leaves in twenty minutes. Tokyo markets closed down three points. Have the briefing notes ready on t
