The car pulled up to Zephyr's penthouse building. It was one of the most expensive addresses in Lysandria, fifty stories of luxury overlooking the city.

Zephyr's penthouse took up the entire fiftieth floor. When he walked in, it felt strange to be home after so long. Everything was exactly as he'd left it. His furniture, his books, his art collection. Like he'd just stepped out for a day instead of disappearing for eight years.

"I'll give you some time to settle in," Thomas said. "But sir, there's a stack of documents you need to review. Business decisions that need your approval. Your brother has been handling things, but some choices can only be made by you."

"Leave them on my desk," Zephyr said. "I'll start reviewing tomorrow."

After Thomas left, Zephyr walked through his penthouse. The bedroom where he'd slept a thousand nights. The office where he'd built his empire. The living room where he'd hosted parties and meetings.

It all felt hollow now. Like this life belonged to someone

They spent the next hour discussing design ideas. Aurora found herself genuinely liking Catherine once the older woman dropped her cold facade. When Damien finally rescued Aurora from his mother's enthusiastic planning, he pulled her aside."I heard what happened with Vivienne," Damien said. "My mother told me everything. Aurora, I'm so sorry you had to deal with that.""It's fine," Aurora said. "Actually, it's better than fine. Your mother is terrifying but also kind of amazing."Damien laughed. "She likes you. She told me to wife you immediately before someone else does.""She did not say that," Aurora protested."She did," Damien confirmed. "In those exact words. 'Wife her immediately, Damien. Before some other smart man realizes what she's worth.'"Aurora felt her face getting hot. "We've been on like four dates.""I know," Damien said. "But my mother sees what I see. That you're special. That you're real. That you're someone worth keeping."He took Aurora's hands. "I know it's fa

"Catherine, please," the older woman corrected. "And yes, I know it's early. But I can see that my son is serious about you. And I wanted to make sure you were worthy of his affection.""And am I?" Aurora asked."More than worthy," Catherine said. "In fact, I'm hoping you'll consider a more permanent arrangement with Damien eventually."Aurora felt her heart racing. "You mean marriage?""I mean that my son has been lost since his brother died," Catherine said bluntly. "Marcus's death hit him hard. He's been drifting and not really connecting with anyone. But when he talks about you, he sounds alive again. That's worth more than any family pedigree."Catherine reached out and patted Aurora's hand. "I misjudged you based on your background. That was wrong of me. You've proven that character and accomplishment matter more than ancestry."There was a knock on the door, and Vivienne entered without waiting for permission."Catherine, I need to speak with you privately," Vivienne said, not

She handed the phone to Catherine, who looked through the photos with increasing surprise."These are quite impressive," Catherine admitted reluctantly. "But still, running a small business is very different from being part of an established family like ours.""Small business?" Aurora couldn't help laughing. "Mrs. Whitmore, my company brought in twelve million dollars in revenue last year. I employ thirty people. I own my intellectual property and my brand. It's not small by any definition."Now the relatives were really paying attention. Twelve million dollars was serious money, even for wealthy people.Vivienne looked furious. "She's probably lying. Inflating numbers to impress everyone.""I can show you my tax returns if you'd like," Aurora offered sweetly.Damien was grinning now. "Mother, I've been trying to tell you. Aurora is incredibly successful. She's not some gold digger looking for money. She has her own wealth and her own career."Catherine was studying Aurora with new in

He led her to a tall, elegant woman in her sixties wearing a cream colored dress and pearls. She had Damien's eyes but a much more severe expression."Mother, this is Aurora Blackwell," Damien said. "Aurora, this is my mother, Catherine Whitmore.""Mrs. Whitmore, it's lovely to meet you," Aurora said, extending her hand.Catherine looked at Aurora's hand for a moment before shaking it limply. "Miss Blackwell. How interesting to finally meet you."The way she said "interesting" made it sound like she meant "disappointing.""Thank you for inviting me," Aurora said politely."Well, when Damien speaks so highly of someone, I simply must investigate," Catherine replied. She looked Aurora up and down like she was examining a piece of furniture she might purchase. "That's a lovely dress. Where is it from?""I designed it myself," Aurora said. "I'm a fashion designer.""How enterprising," Catherine said in a tone that suggested being enterprising was not a compliment. "And where did you study

  • The Barren Ex-Wife's Revenge   The Trial Dinner

Aurora was having a perfectly nice Thursday afternoon in her design studio at the palace when her phone rang with an unknown Lysandrian number."Hello?" Aurora answered cautiously."Is this Aurora Blackwell?" a crisp, professional female voice asked."Yes, this is Aurora.""Wonderful! My name is Catherine Whitmore. I'm Damien Whitmore's mother."Aurora's stomach dropped. Damien's mother? Why was she calling?"Oh, hello Mrs. Whitmore," Aurora said, trying to keep her voice steady. "It's nice to speak with you.""I'm sure Damien has mentioned me," Catherine continued. "I wanted to extend a personal invitation to you for dinner at my home tomorrow evening. Just a small family gathering. Damien will be there, of course, along with a few other relatives."Aurora felt panic rising. A family dinner? That sounded serious. Way too serious for someone she'd only been on a few dates with."That's very kind of you, but I'm not sure if tomorrow works for my schedule," Aurora said, trying to think

Victoria shook her head. "You're overthinking this. The Masked Queen is just a smart businesswoman who happens to care about ethics and accountability. There's no grand conspiracy. No secret identity. You're seeing patterns that aren't there.""Maybe," Jack conceded. "But I have to know for sure."Victoria walked to the door, then turned back. "Jack, be careful. If you start digging into the Masked Queen's past and she finds out, she might take it as a sign we don't trust her. That could ruin any chance of her helping us.""I'll be discreet," Jack promised. After Victoria left, Jack turned back to his laptop. He opened a secure browser and logged into a private database he paid for. The sort of database that contained information not available to the public. He searched for "Elena Valdris, royal connections, Lysandria."Nothing came up directly. But there was a note in the database from six years ago. "Query flagged by Lysandrian intelligence services. Information classified by order
