Serena

Five years is a long time to become someone else.

Most days I forget I ever used to be the frightened, wolf-less Luna who fled Blackthorn bleeding and alone into human territory. I gave birth alone in a human hospital, a nurse holding my hand instead of a husband. It was only weeks into motherhood, exhausted and half-alive, that my wolf finally woke up inside me.

She changed everything. Sharper features, a new scent, the frailty that used to earn me *barren and useless* behind my back gone completely. A new name, a life built somewhere Blackthorn never bothered looking.

None of it came fast. I raised an infant with no pack, no Alpha, no family, using every scrap of administrative skill I picked up as Luna to build something that was actually mine. Now I run a trading and logistics company connecting human businesses to werewolf territories across three regions.

"Blackthorn sent another proposal." Marcus sets the folder on my desk before I've had my coffee. "This one's better than the last three, honestly. The route access alone—"

"No."

"You haven't even opened it."

"I don't need to." I push it back across the desk. "The answer's the same as every time they've asked."

He doesn't push. My employees know their CEO won't touch Blackthorn contracts. None of them know why.

*Protecting her comes first.*

The phone rings.

The second I see the hospital’s name on the screen, everything else stops mattering.

I answer immediately. “Hello?”

“Mrs. Vaughn, Marlowe is having another episode.”

My heart drops. “Again? I'll be there.”

I grab my coat.

...

I make it to the hospital faster than I should legally be driving. Marlowe's propped up in bed, pale and worn out, and still managing to look thoroughly unimpressed with the whole situation.

"Mommy!" She reaches both arms out the second she sees me.

I hold her carefully, feeling how warm she still is. "Hey, baby. How are you feeling?"

"Bad." She pouts, dragging the word out. "And they won't gimme the good jello. Only the boring red one."

I almost laugh, even with my heart still hammering from the drive over. "The boring red one?"

“It doesn’t even taste like anything, Mommy.” She says it like she’s been given the biggest punishment in the world.

The doctor calls me out a few minutes later, her face carrying the same careful weight it always does before she says something I don't want to hear.

"She's stable now," she says. "But these episodes are getting more frequent, and we're running out of explanations on your side alone. Without any information on her father's medical or wolf history, we're limited in what we can rule out."

"That's not an option," I say, too fast.

"I understand there are complications." She doesn't push yet. But I can see it in her face, this conversation isn't over, only postponed.

I go back into the room and Marlowe is already trying to negotiate with me.

"Mommy, I was really, really brave." She holds up two fingers like it proves something. "The nurse said so. Can I get ice cream? And the wolf? The gray one, downstairs, I saw it when we came in."

"You just had one cramp and a little fever, Marlowe."

"Mommy." She nods very seriously.

I hold out for exactly as long as it takes her to give me the look she's perfected since she could talk, and then I promise to get her both.

...

I leave to go find the ice cream and the wolf, the doctor's words still sitting heavy in my chest.

*Paternal bloodline. Kael.*

That whole life is something I buried five years ago. Something I've spent five years making sure never finds its way back to either of us.

I turn down a quiet corridor toward the gift shop and stop.

That voice.…I know that voice. Something about it makes me look up.

He's a few feet away, talking to another man in low, clipped tones. Older than I remember, something harder around the eyes now. But unmistakably him.

*Move. Don’t let him see you. Walk away right now, Serena.*

My feet don't move. He lifts his head and for one endless second, his eyes land directly on me.

Nothing shifts in his face at first. Just a flicker, the kind of curiosity you'd give a stranger.

*Does he recognize me?*

Then he starts walking toward me.

SerenaKael hesitates, and for one second I think he's actually going to stay."Serena." He crouches in front of me, his hands settling on my shoulders. "The healer couldn't confirm anything. This could just be stress. Your body's been through so much these last two days.""It's not stress, Kael. Something is wrong.""I'm not betraying you by going tonight. You know that, don't you?"*Gentle. He's being gentle with me right before he walks out the door to go get another woman pregnant.*Another knock. The messenger again, apologizing through the door, saying the elders and Lyra have been waiting nearly twenty minutes now, that any longer will raise questions he can't answer for.Kael looks at the door, then back at me."Please," I whisper again, gripping his hand tighter."You don't have to do this," he says, and for a second I don't understand him."Do what?""You don't have to make yourself ill to keep me here, Serena. You're still my Luna and I still love you. Nothing about tonight

SerenaHe looks at me for a long moment, then pulls out his phone."I need a healer sent to the residence." His voice is flat, already moving toward the window. "Now, if possible. It's Serena."*He’s saying my name like it's some medical case. Not like I'm his wife.*The healer arrives within minutes. I hand him the ultrasound and the clinic's report before he even asks."Here." I push the papers into his hands. "Human proof. I want your senses to confirm what's already on this paper."He studies the images, then presses his palms against my stomach and closes his eyes. I hold my breath, waiting. He frowns."What." The word comes out sharper than I mean it to. "What is it?""The human evidence is compelling, Luna." He chooses each word like it costs him something. "But I cannot detect a wolf signature. Without supernatural confirmation, I cannot formally certify this to the council.""I heard the heartbeat myself. I saw the images on the screen, what more do you need from me?""I'm so

SerenaI'm unable to go to sleep, not really.*He hurt me last night. But he's still my husband. And this is still his child, whatever it turns out to be. One home test isn't enough to build anything on.*By the time the sun comes up, I've decided. I need to know for certain.I won't go anywhere near Blackthorn's healers. The Moon Cradle already declared me barren in front of the entire pack last night, If I walk into the infirmary this morning claiming pregnancy, it'll be mockery within the hour.So I use one of my usual Luna errands as cover, tell the guards I have supply matters to check on outside the territory, and drive myself to a private clinic two towns over where no one knows my face...."The test we ran is positive," the doctor says, setting it down on the tray beside me. "Same as what you took at home.""I need something more, doctor. Is there something else you can do? Today, right now."She studies me, then nods. "We can do an ultrasound. It won't tell us much this earl

Serena"I accept the Covenant."The courtyard erupts. Relief and excitement ripple through the crowd like something released after years of holding its breath.*He said yes, just like that?*I don't move. I can't. Somewhere behind me, people are celebrating as though Kael has just saved them from something instead of handing me over to it."Serena." Mira's hand finds mine, and I realize I've stopped breathing properly."I'm fine," I whisper. A lie so obvious even I don't believe it.Kael turns immediately to the council, already trying to contain what he's just agreed to. "Serena remains Luna," he says, his voice carrying over the noise. "No Blood Consort will hold authority over her. The woman chosen will have no emotional, marital, or political claim over me beyond what the Covenant strictly requires."*Is he negotiating terms? He said yes, and now he's negotiating terms, like this is a treaty and not our marriage.*"Understood, Alpha," Elder Corwin says, and something in the way he

Six years of being told, without anyone quite saying it, that I might be the one thing wrong with this marriage.I wake with a sharp twist low in my stomach and barely make it to the bathroom before I'm sick. When it stops, I stay on my knees, one hand on the basin, the other pressed to my stomach.*Not today.
