Sasha stood inside an empty industrial building on the edge of Chicago.

The walls were thick, and most of the structure had been built above ground level. There was enough space for medical equipment, food storage, water tanks, and backup generators.

It was not yet a fortress, but it would become one by the time she was done.

She turned to the contractor. “How soon can the reinforcement work be completed?” she queried.

The contractor looked through the plans. “With enough workers, perhaps five weeks.”

Sasha shook her head. “I will pay an additional fifty percent if it is completed in four.” She bargained.

The contractor’s eyes widened. “We can do it.” He agreed immediately as he passed the contract to her.

Sasha signed the contract.

She had already divided her inheritance into several accounts. One part would be used for the building. The rest would be used for food, medicine, fuel, water equipment, and security.

{Shelter acquisition completed.}

{Construction mission activated.}

{Six weeks and four days until pathogen outbreak.}

Sasha left the building and drove to the hospital. She could not stop working yet.

Her knowledge as a trauma nurse would be important once the outbreak began. The hospital also gave her access to information about unusual patients and medical supplies.

When she entered the emergency department, Becca hurried toward her.

“We had three strange cases this morning,” she disclosed looking a bit confused.

“What kind of cases?”

“High fever, itching, severe headache. Their scans were normal, but they became aggressive after a few hours.”

Sasha’s expression changed. The first symptoms were already appearing.

In her previous life, everyone had dismissed them as heat-related illness.

“Keep copies of their results and isolate their blood samples.” Sasha instructed.

Becca frowned. “Why?”

“Just do it. Please.” She requested; explaining would just complicate things.

Becca studied her face before nodding. “Alright.” She didn’t ask any other thing. She believed Sasha would have a reasonable explanation later on.

Sasha changed into her scrubs and started her shift. Her phone continued to vibrate inside her pocket.

Joseph had called her eleven times, but she ignored him.

At noon, a nurse approached her.

She smiled, “Sasha, your husband is waiting outside.”

Sasha continued writing her patient report. “I’m busy.”

“He brought flowers.” She cooed.

“That does not change anything.” Sasha’s eyes didn’t break away from her report still.

The nurse looked uncomfortable. “He said he won’t leave until you speak to him.”

Sasha sighed out heavily and finally walked into the hallway.

Joseph stood there holding a large bouquet.

Several nurses were looking at him. He had always known how to appear like a good husband in public.

“I sent Cassie away,” he informed.

Sasha glanced briefly at the flowers. She felt nothing. “What do you want?”

“I already told my mother not to speak to you that way again. Cassie has returned to her apartment. You can come home.”

“You think that is why I left?”

“You were angry because she moved in.”

“I was angry because your entire family treats me like a servant.”

Joseph lowered his voice. “They will treat you better.”

“For how long?” she questioned blankly.

He did not answer.

Sasha noticed the dark circles beneath his eyes. It meant that the company crisis had not ended.

“The board needs your complete plan,” he finally disclosed. “Once the funding arrives, we can recover.”

Sasha almost smiled. “You sent Cassie away because you wanted my money.”

“That is not true.” He lied quickly.

“Then why did you mention the company before asking whether I was all right?”

Joseph’s expression hardened. “I came here to fix our marriage. Stop trying to turn everything into a fight.”

“There is nothing to fix.”

She turned to leave.

Joseph caught her wrist. “Sasha, don’t embarrass me in front of everyone.”

Her body stiffened.

In her previous life, that sentence would have made her stop.

This time, she removed his hand. “You should get used to being embarrassed.”

She returned to the emergency department.

Joseph stood in the hallway with the flowers still in his hand. He watched her leave with a dark expression.

He still did not believe she would divorce him.

Sasha was angry. That was all.

Once she saw everything he had done for her, she would come back.

***

At the end of her shift, Becca entered the staff room with a sealed folder.

“The first results are ready.” She informed.

Sasha immediately stood up.

Becca closed the door behind her. “Your reproductive system is healthy.” She reported.

Sasha said nothing.

“There is no scar or damage that should prevent you from becoming pregnant,” Becca continued. “But your hormone levels are abnormal. It looks like you have been taking a strong fertility suppressant for years.”

She placed another report on the table. “We also tested the medicine you gave me. It contains the same substance.”

As Sasha stared at the papers, the words blurred for a moment. She had spent six years believing she was broken.

Every insult from Hera, every time Joseph had looked disappointed and every time she had cried alone because she could not give him a child.

None of it had been true.

Becca placed a hand on her shoulder in concern. “Sasha, who gave you that medicine?”

Sasha slowly closed the folder.

“My family.”

Sasha’s voice came through as soon as the call connected. “Joseph, what are you stalling for?” She demanded.Joseph scoffed, “Stalling? I am only doing you a favour, Sasha. I know you fabricated those reports to cause a misunderstanding,” he pointed out with a cocky tone. The side of Sasha’s mouth twitched, “What?” She was indeed very surprised by his foolishness. She must have been really blind to not notice before. His voice suddenly softened, “There is no need to go through these manners just to get my attention. You are my wife after all. If you come back home and help the company like you are supposed to, I will forgive you. Everything can go back to the way they used to be.”“I won’t even press charges for defamation against my mother.” He spoke like he was really doing her a favour.Sasha stayed silent for a while. She didn’t even know what to say. His level of shamelessness really needed to be studied.“Think whatever you want, Joseph. Just make sure you sign those divorce pa

Sasha walked into the hospital without waiting for them to recover. She was certain they would still come back, but this time, she wouldn’t give them access to even see her.“Those people outside are a nuisance, don’t let them in again this hospital needs a fresh and clean atmosphere.” She informed the security personnel at the front. The security man was lost, “Are they not your family?”“No, they are not.” She responded briefly before heading to start her shift.Dr. Becca was already waiting. “What did they say? Don’t tell me they denied it.” she queried with a frown. She would have filed a case against them yesterday after they had found out, but when Sasha insisted she could handle it, she let it go.“Whether they deny it or not wouldn’t change the truth. We have proof.”“Then use it. Why are you still stalling? Don’t you think they will move fast and look for a way to turn everything against you now that they are aware that you know?”She paused, staring at Sasha with an unknown

Cassie was waiting outside the hospital the next morning. The moment she saw Sasha, she rushed forward. “Are you satisfied now?” she demanded sharply.Sasha stopped walking.Cassie’s eyes were red, but her expensive clothes and makeup were still perfect.“Joseph forced me to leave the mansion because of you. The children cried all night.” “That sounds like a problem between you and Joseph.” She pointed out with a bored expression.Cassie sneered as a provocative smile curled up her lips. “You know he only did it because you are holding the company’s money over his head.”Sasha looked at her calmly. “So you know why he sent you away.”Cassie’s face changed. “You think you won? Joseph loves his children. He will never remove us from his life.”“I don’t want him.”“Stop lying. You have been jealous of me since the day you married him.”Cassie moved closer. “You cannot give him a child. That is why you are so desperate to take mine.”Sasha’s fingers tightened around the folder in her han

Two days later, the Westfield Group was falling apart.Joseph sat at the head of the conference table, rubbing his forehead as the board members argued around him.The company’s newest product had been found to contain a dangerous chemical and their business partners were cancelling contracts causing the company’s stock price to fall continuously.“This is your responsibility!” one of the board members shouted. “You insisted on releasing the product before the final test results were completed.”“If this continues, the Westfield Group will be bankrupt within a week.”“We need emergency funding.”Joseph clenched his jaw. “The funding is coming.” He responded. The board members slowly became quiet. Everyone knew Sasha had agreed to invest part of her parents’ inheritance in the company. She had also prepared an emergency plan in case the new product failed.Joseph checked his phone again nervously; Sasha had not answered any of his calls. Sasha stared at Cassie in disbelief; the woman was wearing the same white dress she had worn seven weeks before the outbreak. Lily and Ethan stood beside her with unhappy expressions. This was the day Cassie returned to the Westfield mansion. She was reborn.“Sasha!” Hera snapped. “Why are you standing there like a fool? Bring me my coffee.” She ordered coldly.Sasha looked down at the cup in her hand; her eyes shimmered in realization. She remembered this morning. In her previous life, Cassie had accused her of frightening the children with stories from the hospital and Hera had used the accusation to invite Cassie to move into the mansion. From that day forward, Sasha had become a maid in her own home.“Sasha, what did you do to my children?” Cassie demanded. “They have been having nightmares since they stayed with you.”She quickly walked to Hera and with an aggrieved expression. “Mother, Sasha works with injured and mentally unstable patients every day. I’m worried her work is aff
