Nora sat in the car. The engine was off. The laundromat was dark. Margaret sat beside her.

"Are we going in?" Margaret asked.

"Yes."

Nora got out. She grabbed the file. She walked to the entrance. The door was unlocked. She pushed it open.

The room was empty. The machines were silent. The lights were off. Nora found the switch. Fluorescent light buzzed overhead. She pulled out a chair. Margaret sat across from her.

Nora opened the file. She spread the documents across the table. Photographs. Me

  • The Barren Wife's Revenge    The Reckoning

Dawn came through the laundromat windows. Gray light, cold light. The fluorescent bulbs kept buzzing overhead. Nobody had slept.Vivian drank water and ate a piece of bread, slow, one small bite at a time. She looked better. Not healed. Better.Nora sat across from her and watched her eat. She didn't say anything. She didn't know what to say. She didn't know Vivian, not really. Vivian had been brought in to take her place. Vivian had been a pawn, then a captive. Now she was free, and Nora still felt nothing close to warmth toward her. She had saved her. That was the whole of it."How long were you there?" Nora asked.Vivian swallowed and looked at the table. "I don't know. Weeks, maybe more. I lost track of the days. There wasn't a window in that room, no clock, nothing to count by except the meals someone brought when they remembered to.""What did Desmond want?""He wanted you to stop. He wanted the evidence. He told me you wouldn't come for me. Said you'd moved on, that you didn't

  • The Barren Wife's Revenge    The Escape

The footsteps got closer. Heavy boots on concrete. The guard was at the door.Nora looked at Vivian, then the window, then the door. She had no weapon. She didn't know how to fight. She grabbed a chair. Metal, light. She swung it at the window. The glass shattered."Out the window! Now!"The door opened. The guard filled the frame. Tall, wide, a dark coat. He saw Nora at the window and moved toward her.Nora ran, not for the door, straight at the guard. She wasn't going to fight him. She couldn't. She had never learned to throw a punch or block one, and she wasn't going to start now with a stranger twice her size, in a room with no time left to learn. She ran past him instead, grabbed Vivian, and pulled her toward the broken window. The guard reached for her. She slipped and fell hard, hitting the fire escape platform. Vivian went down beside her. The guard was at the window now, reaching through it.Nora grabbed Vivian and pulled her down the stairs. The metal was rusted, the steps n

  • The Barren Wife's Revenge    The Driver

Elias got there at 3:02 in the morning. He parked across the street and checked both directions before he crossed. He knocked twice. Nora opened the door.He was thin, late forties, his eyes moving too fast. His hands shook. He looked at the women inside, then back at the door behind him. One hand stayed on the doorframe the whole time he talked. He wanted to leave. Anyone could see that."Sit down," Nora said.He sat. He looked at Rachel and his face went pale."You," he said. "You're still alive.""I am. Now tell them what you know."He looked at Nora, then the file on the table, then the door again."I work for Desmond. I drive him places. I see things. I hear things.""Vivian," Nora said. "Where is she?""Warehouse, east side. Abandoned. Isolated. She's in a room on the second floor.""Guards?""One at her door. Two at the entrance. They work shifts, eight hours on, eight off.""How many cameras?""Six. Outside, inside, every hallway. There's a security room on the first floor. On

  • The Barren Wife's Revenge    The Next Move

Nora walked into the laundromat with Rachel behind her. The door shut. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead.Margaret got up. Her face went white. She stared at Rachel and didn't say anything for a second."Rachel." Her voice cracked on it. "You're alive.""I am. Ten years now."Margaret didn't move. She looked at the cane, then the face, then the worn coat."I looked for you. For years.""I know. I couldn't tell you I was alive. It was too dangerous.""You faked your death.""I had to. They were going to kill me. I didn't have a choice."Rachel crossed to the table and sat down. She set her cane on the floor by her chair."They hit me on the highway. Drove me off the road. My car flipped. I woke up in the hospital three weeks later. They told me it was an accident."Margaret sat down across from her, still pale. "Richard?""He knew. He came to see me once. Told me to leave, to disappear. Told me the next accident wouldn't leave a survivor."Nora sat down across from them. Priya sat

  • The Barren Wife's Revenge    The Bridge

Nora got to Broad Street Bridge at midnight. The street was empty. She parked, got out, left her phone on the seat, and walked onto the pedestrian walkway. The wind came off the water. She pulled her coat tight and walked to the middle of the bridge. She stopped. She waited.Five minutes passed. Then ten. Nothing. No sound, no movement. She started to think no one was coming. Then she heard footsteps.A woman walked onto the bridge. Older, gray hair pulled back, a heavy coat, a cane in her right hand. She moved slow, careful, the way people move when they've been hurt before and don't trust their own legs anymore. She stopped a few feet from Nora."You're Nora Bishop.""Who are you?""My name is Rachel."Nora stared at her. Rachel. The woman from Margaret's file. The one who disappeared. The one they said might still be alive."Margaret said you were gone," Nora said. "She looked for you for years.""I know. I let her look. I couldn't tell her I was alive. It was too dangerous.""You

  • The Barren Wife's Revenge    The Interview

Nina Chen took the chair across from Nora and set her bag down beside it. Her eyes went straight to the file."This is everything," she said. "This is what I've been waiting for."Nora opened it and spread the evidence across the table, photographs, spreadsheets, medical records, letters, names, dates, and walked her through it piece by piece."Petrov, typing the diagnosis code at six forty-seven, the night of the gala." She moved to the next photo. "Constance, reading over his shoulder." Then the third. "Adrian, watching from the doorway."Nina took notes without interrupting once. She asked a question here and there, quiet and precise, questions that said she already believed what she was seeing but needed it confirmed out loud.Nora slid the spreadsheet across. Twelve families. Twenty women. Seven years."This is Margaret's file," she said. "She was married to Arthur Kane. They did the same thing to her. She lost her baby. She lost everything."Nina looked at Margaret. Margaret nod
