Police cars filled the parking lot. Blue and red lights hit the concrete, over and over. Doors opened. Officers stepped out with guns drawn. They found Desmond on his knees. The gun lay on the ground a few feet from him.

"Hands up!"

His hands were already up. Blood ran down his arm from the cut on his hand. He looked at the ground and said nothing.

Two officers grabbed him by the arms and pulled him to his feet. They cuffed him. One started reading his rights while the other checked him for mor

Adrian came back inside. Nora was at the table with her coffee, as if she'd been waiting for him to have something to tell her."Lore wants me to go back to the city," Adrian said. No preamble.Nora didn't react for a moment. She kept her hands around the mug. Hope was asleep in the carrier on the counter, one arm loose from the swaddle again. Nora didn't fix it."Why.""Samuel's still there. Webb knows it. Lore's moving him tonight, but if Webb's attorneys file the right discovery delays, they have time to discredit his statement before trial. Say he was coerced, pressured, moved to a safe house that taints his credibility." Adrian sat down across from her. "If I'm there, verify his cooperation was voluntary, testify that I met him and he knew exactly what he was doing, it becomes harder for them to spin.""You'd testify for Samuel Park.""I'd testify that a man Webb tried to kill decided to help end Webb instead of run." Adrian looked at her. "Lore says I'm credible because I had no

  • The Barren Wife's Revenge    DRIVEWAY

Adrian didn't see the car until he was halfway down the drive. No headlights. Lore had pulled into the tree line at the property's edge, far enough back that she wasn't visible from the house. The Riverside property's isolation worked both directions—no neighbors to see Webb's PI, and no one to see Lore if she wanted to stay invisible. He checked his phone. 6:28 a.m. Still dark. The forest around them was the color of old concrete.Lore was already out of the car. She was wearing the same clothes as yesterday, or different ones that looked identical—dark jacket, messenger bag slung across her chest, no coffee in her hands. She didn't sleep, Adrian had decided. She moved through cases the way other people moved through rooms, seeing information the rest of them couldn't access."Webb moved assets at 11:47 p.m. last night," Lore said before Adrian reached her. "Seventeen million. Offshore to a shell with a 48-hour clearing window before it hits a secondary account we can't trace.""He's

  • The Barren Wife's Revenge    FIRST MORNING

Adrian woke to a cry.Not loud. Newborns didn't have volume yet. It was the sound of discomfort, the way Hope signaled without words—wet diaper, hungry, tired. He knew the pattern from Saturday visits, the six hours of watching Nora anticipate every shift. Now he was in a house with them. The whole night. The whole day waiting. He didn't move. The cry came again, softer. A door opened across the hall—Nora's room. He heard her barefoot on the wooden floor, the creak of the crib rail coming down.He waited for the sound to stop.It didn't. The cry escalated, not panic, just frustration. Hope wanted something Nora wasn't providing yet. Adrian was already moving, muscle memory from his house, his routines, the way he'd learned to read her in six weeks of Saturday mornings. He was in the hallway before he remembered.Nora was already holding her, swaying in the pre-dawn gray. She didn't look at him. Her eyes were half-closed, her shirt unbuttoned halfway for feeding. The house was cold. Sh

  • The Barren Wife's Revenge    11:47 a.m.

The news hit at 11:47 a.m.Nora was sitting in Rachel's kitchen, Hope asleep against her chest, Vivian reading something on her phone with the volume off when Vivian's hand went slack. She looked up."They're releasing it," Vivian said. "All fourteen pages. Lore went to the press himself. The companion file, the senator's name, Webb's son, and—" She scrolled. "This. This is Rachel's contact."Nora didn't ask. She listened."The contact worked in Webb's office fifteen years ago," Vivian kept reading. "Webb told him directly: 'Rule for us on Hart cases, and we keep your daughter's drug charge off the record.' Full quote. The state attorney's office is releasing office correspondence dated the same days as thirteen Hart-connected rulings. Thirteen cases where Webb's decisions came down within 48 hours of Cross operatives contacting the office."Rachel came in from the bedroom where she'd been on call with her contact. Her face was white."He gave them everything," Rachel said. "Phone log

  • The Barren Wife's Revenge    The Ledger Goes Public

The state attorney's office had grey walls and fluorescent lights that made everyone look like they'd been dead for a week. Nora sat at a table that was too wide, her lawyer a woman named Margaret Chen who charged by the quarter-hour and had already made it clear she'd object to anything that smelled like coercion. Lore was across from her, his folder open, his pen already moving."Start with the church," he said. "Samuel's presence there. What did he say to you.""He told me Robert was planning something. That I needed to get out.""His exact words."Nora recited it. Chen shifted beside her — a sign that Nora was doing something right, or that Chen wanted to talk to her alone later. Probably both.Lore wrote. The pen didn't stop for three minutes."Robert paid him," Lore said finally. "Three hundred thousand. You know that.""I know that now.""But not then.""No.""What did you think Samuel wanted."Nora had thought about this. She'd thought about it at 4 AM when Hope wouldn't settl

The apartment smelled like formula and the coffee Nora hadn't finished. She'd been staring at the same page of her deposition notes for twenty minutes. Vivian was in the other room with Hope, both of them asleep. Rachel had gone to her office to prep for tomorrow's 11 a.m. statement.Nora heard the knock before the bell. She checked the time. 8:47 p.m. She knew who it was.Adrian stood in the hallway with his hands shoved in his coat pockets and rain on his shoulders. He didn't ask if he could come in. He stepped past her before she could decide."We need to talk about the move," he said."Come in, Adrian.""I am in." He turned. "Vivian here?""Asleep. Hope's asleep.""Then we talk fast." He pulled his hands out of his pockets. "I have a contact. Former Sentinel Risk person who left about a year ago. She runs a private security firm now—small, clean, not connected to anything Cross touched. She has a safe property in Riverside County. Single-family house, backed up to protected land,
