"I further state," Adrian read, "that Mr. Kane told me I would be cut out of the case if I didn't come with him. And that I agreed to nothing he said."

Nora stood at the counter with the phone face up. The notepad said 11:12.

"Read that again."

Adrian read it again.

Nora saw it whole. Samuel signs, and every word he gave Lore becomes an ex-con's pressure.

"That's not what happened," Samuel said, thin and far off.

"It's what's typed," the man said.

Down the hall, Hope started to cry. Nora thumbe

Nora wrote 11:22 on the notepad. Her handwriting ran uphill. Hope lay along her left arm, awake and quiet, fist at her mouth."Adrian. Are you cut?""Palm.""Bad?""It's bleeding. I can still close it.""Then close it and hold. Both hands where he can see them. Leave the pocket alone.""Okay."She pressed mute. Rachel stood at her elbow with the second phone."Contact checked in at eleven twenty," Rachel said. "Clear. And Lore said eleven thirty. Twice. I wrote it both times.""I know what she said.""I'm only saying I wrote it."Nora typed one-handed and sent it: Men say two cars off the highway at 11:17, county road. Yours?"Take her," she said. "I need both hands."Rachel lifted Hope onto her shoulder. Nora unmuted."Ask him who gets the photo."Adrian's voice came through the pocket, muffled. "Who gets the photo?""Whoever I'm told," the big man said."Told when?""After he signs.""Who needs it signed?""Somebody with a Monday morning.""Ask him whose," Nora said."Whose Monday?"

The car door opened behind him at 11:19.Adrian watched it in the mirror. A second man stepped out of the dark shape in the gateway. Hood up. A short steel bar hung from his right hand."Not yet," the big man said. He didn't turn around."Phone says yet."The second man came up the driver's side and held his screen out. The big man read it. His jaw moved once."Who sent that?""Same as before.""Read it to him.""Two cars turned off the highway at eleven seventeen. They're on the county road."Nora's voice came out of Adrian's shirt pocket, low and fast. "That's wrong. Lore said eleven thirty. She said it twice."Adrian kept his eyes on the big man's hands. "Ten minutes ago you said twenty-five.""Now I'm saying less. Deadline was eleven twenty. It's eleven nineteen and a half.""Which road?""The one you came in on.""Logging eleven nineteen," Nora said. "Either he's rushing you or I was told wrong. Don't react to it. Make him say something I can use."The pen in Samuel's fist shook

Nora thumbed the mute. Her shirt soaked through at the front.Rachel was in the doorway with Hope on her shoulder. "She wants you.""I know what she wants.""Nora.""Back room. Shut the door."Rachel went, and the door closed on the crying.Nora pressed a dish towel to her shirt with one hand and kept the pen in the other. She hadn't fed Hope since eight. She picked up Rachel's second phone and typed with her thumb. He knows your ETA. Twenty minutes, maybe twenty-five. Who did you tell?Lore answered insid

The man stopped ten feet from the driver's window. The high beams behind him kept his face dark.Adrian kept both hands on the wheel. The phone in his shirt pocket was still live. Nora could hear all of it."Don't get out," Samuel said."I wasn't going to."The man was big. Canvas coat, ball cap, mud to both knees. Adrian looked at the boots. They matched the prints on the sill. The man raised his left hand. A sheet of paper, folded in thirds. His right hand stayed open at his side."Mr. Kane. Crack the window."Adrian cracked it two inches. Cold air came in, smelling of wet gravel."You've got the wrong car," Adrian said."No. You're in the right one." The man tipped the paper. "Page fifteen. Top drawer, left side. Somebody taped the key under the desk like that would help."Samuel made a sound in his throat."Who are you?" Adrian said."Someone who gets paid to find things. I found this.""How'd you know about the office?""You want to talk about what I know, or what I want?""Both.

Nora heard the floor move before Adrian said anything. It came through his shirt pocket as a dull creak, then a second one lower down. She stood at the kitchen counter with the phone on speaker and a pen in her hand. She wrote 11:04 on the pad under Rachel's 10:57."Adrian."He didn't answer. Cloth brushed the phone. His breathing slowed down. He had stopped moving."Adrian. Say something small.""Floor," he said, barely above the hiss on the line. "Behind the wall. The back hall.""Someone in the building?""Something moved. I don't know what."An engine turned over on his end. It was not close. It came from the far side of the building and caught on the second try."That's a vehicle," Nora said."Behind the trailer. Where the lot ends.""Is it leaving?""I can't see it. No windows on that side.""Where's Samuel?""Behind me. At the desk." His voice dropped. "He says the back door sticks. He says nobody could get out that way fast.""Then nobody was in the hall. They were already out

Adrian drove through the open gate at ten miles an hour with the headlights off."Stop here," Samuel said.He stopped. The gravel lot was empty except for a dump truck with flat tires and a stack of concrete blocks. The office was a white trailer on cinder blocks, thirty yards ahead. One window was lit yellow."Nora," Adrian said to the phone on the console."I'm here. What do you see?""One light in the office. No vehicle in the lot.""None?""None." He checked the mirror. The county road behind them was dark. "The car that followed us stopped out there. It hasn't come in.""Then it knows where you are," Nora said. "Rachel is in the back with Hope. It's me and the phone. Go."Samuel put his hand on the door. "I go in. It's my key.""I go first. You wait at the steps.""It's my desk.""Somebody cut that chain. You locked it Friday." Adrian turned in the seat. "Either that person is in there, or they were in there and left the light on."Samuel took his hand off the door. "Steps," he s
