Nora heard the floor move before Adrian said anything.

It came through his shirt pocket as a dull creak, then a second one lower down. She stood at the kitchen counter with the phone on speaker and a pen in her hand. She wrote 11:04 on the pad under Rachel's 10:57.

"Adrian."

He didn't answer. Cloth brushed the phone. His breathing slowed down. He had stopped moving.

"Adrian. Say something small."

"Floor," he said, barely above the hiss on the line. "Behind the wall. The back hall."

Nora heard the floor move before Adrian said anything. It came through his shirt pocket as a dull creak, then a second one lower down. She stood at the kitchen counter with the phone on speaker and a pen in her hand. She wrote 11:04 on the pad under Rachel's 10:57."Adrian."He didn't answer. Cloth brushed the phone. His breathing slowed down. He had stopped moving."Adrian. Say something small.""Floor," he said, barely above the hiss on the line. "Behind the wall. The back hall.""Someone in the building?""Something moved. I don't know what."An engine turned over on his end. It was not close. It came from the far side of the building and caught on the second try."That's a vehicle," Nora said."Behind the trailer. Where the lot ends.""Is it leaving?""I can't see it. No windows on that side.""Where's Samuel?""Behind me. At the desk." His voice dropped. "He says the back door sticks. He says nobody could get out that way fast.""Then nobody was in the hall. They were already out

Adrian drove through the open gate at ten miles an hour with the headlights off."Stop here," Samuel said.He stopped. The gravel lot was empty except for a dump truck with flat tires and a stack of concrete blocks. The office was a white trailer on cinder blocks, thirty yards ahead. One window was lit yellow."Nora," Adrian said to the phone on the console."I'm here. What do you see?""One light in the office. No vehicle in the lot.""None?""None." He checked the mirror. The county road behind them was dark. "The car that followed us stopped out there. It hasn't come in.""Then it knows where you are," Nora said. "Rachel is in the back with Hope. It's me and the phone. Go."Samuel put his hand on the door. "I go in. It's my key.""I go first. You wait at the steps.""It's my desk.""Somebody cut that chain. You locked it Friday." Adrian turned in the seat. "Either that person is in there, or they were in there and left the light on."Samuel took his hand off the door. "Steps," he s

The line stayed open, and Nora heard all of it from the counter.Tires hummed on asphalt. Adrian said, "How far to the turn?" Samuel said, "Two miles. Maybe three." The engine climbed and held."Rachel."Rachel stood at the end of the counter with Hope on her left arm and the notepad in front of her. Hope was crying in short bursts, the ones that came before the long one. She had not eaten since eight."Call Lore on the second phone," Nora said."You said after.""It's after. There's a car on them."Rachel dialed with her right thumb and held the phone out. Lore answered before the first ring finished."Where is he?""North of Exit 41, on a county road. He's in Samuel's car with Samuel. A second car came up behind them about 10:54 and put its high beams on.""Samuel's car," Lore said. "Not the driver's.""He drove himself."Lore breathed once. "Which county road?""I don't have a marker.""Nora.""That's all I have." It was not all she had. She had a quarry and a gate. She had four pe

The phone rang in Samuel's sock.Samuel bent over and dug out a cheap flip phone. He held it away from himself. The dash clock said 10:46."That's her," Adrian said."It's the only number it knows." Samuel flipped it open. "Bought it Friday, same register as the other one. It's never been inside my apartment.""Speaker."Samuel pressed the button and set the phone on the console between them. Adrian cut the engine. The county road ran black in both directions."Adrian." Nora's voice came out small and clear."I'm here.""Samuel.""I'm here, Nora.""Rachel's writing. Say your name and the time."Samuel looked at the dash. "Samuel Park. 10:47 p.m. I left my apartment on my own. Nobody took me and nobody told me to go.""Again. Slower."He said it again, slower. Adrian heard a pen scratch on the other end."That's b," Nora said. "Adrian. You heard it.""I heard it.""Good." A breath. "Now tell me why I'm holding a number.""Every phone you have is on somebody's list," Samuel said. "Mine,

Nora's phone lit at 10:36. Three texts landed at once, one on top of the other. The first was stamped 10:17.Out of the car. Samuel is here. Alone. She read it standing in the dark kitchen, Hope's weight on her shoulder, the phone the only light. Nineteen minutes. The pin on her map had frozen at 10:19, and she had watched it not move for seventeen minutes. Twice the contact had checked in. Clear. Clear. She had answered both with her thumb and typed nothing to Adrian, because she had told him no at 9:28 and she would not be the one who chased.Rachel looked up from the table. "That him?""It's late.""How late?""He wrote it at 10:17."Rachel said nothing. Nora scrolled to the second.Tracker in Samuel's bag. Cut into the lining. Sent the bag off in the sedan as a decoy. Samuel's with me.The third was stamped 10:35.I'm driving. His car. I know what I promised. I couldn't ask you.She read the third one twice. Hope's sock had come off again and hung from her toes. Nora left it.The

"Then somebody's watching you," Adrian said."Nobody followed me." Samuel kept his voice low and fast. "I drove back roads for two hours. I stopped twice with the lights off. Nothing came through.""The car?""I went over it. Wheel wells, bumpers, under the dash.""The bag."Samuel looked down at his left hand. "It's shirts. Cash.""Open it.""Adrian.""Open it, or I do."Samuel set the bag on the gravel and pulled the zipper. Two shirts, a toothbrush, a rubber-banded stack of bills, a manila folder. Adrian knelt and ran his thumb along the lining seam. Three sides were stitched. The fourth had been cut and glued back.Something hard shifted under his thumb. He got a nail under the glue and pulled out a black disc the size of a half dollar. Tape still clung to one face.Samuel made a sound that wasn't a word."Where's this bag been?""My hall closet. Since Thursday.""Who's been in your hall?""Vivian's people walked the exits Thursday. Lore's man came Friday about the lock. Maintenan
