Chapter Seventy-Two

Miriam lay wakeful beside her husband contemplating their future. King Harald was out of the way at last. Surely the next monarch would not have such power and influence, or had she misread the situation? Of course, returning to Eggsor was unthinkable until Beyla was restored to them.

It had been a whole month now and no word from Tyr.

Philip had been buried with Daphne, as was fitting, and King Hubert seemed to be coming round to the idea of an heir other than her young daughter. Simon was a lot older and yet he seemed to have the good of the realm at heart. Being born illegitimate sometimes made children more moral than those conceived under conventional constraints.

So, all things being equal, they could return as a family to Eggsor and remain there in relative obscurity as far as the land of her birth was concerned.

Miriam crossed herself. She hoped she wasn’t tempting Fate.
