I am not sure what almost made me smile. Despite the heavy burden I am carrying, the thought that my plan is almost achieved gives me a bit of relief, yet still I couldn't help but be worried deep inside. For someone who looked as though he spent more time throwing punches than holding conversations, he seemed strangely pleased that I had finally asked for his name. "Well?" I leaned one elbow against the counter. "Your name, Mister?" He picked up the glass Randal had placed before him and took an unhurried drink. I noticed his strong arms despite the jacket. He must be over six feet tall, being handsome is an added bonus not to mention this man is very skilled in fighting. I could pay him really good and it would be worth it. "You can call me Ivan." He let the silence stretch out just enough to annoy me before adding, "Ivan Cross." I repeated it quietly in my head. His strange name. Ivan Cross. It suited him just fine. A bit rough but something tells me he could be a gentleman if he wanted to. "So..." I swirled the amber liquor inside my glass. "You own this beerhouse." "I do." he answered in a low but deep voice, which instantly reminded me of my coz chamber in the Palace. "No wife?" "Not yet." "So, you haven't found your Mate?" He snorted. "No. Women come and go in my life, but not one I would consider as my mate." "Family?" His expression didn't change. "None." I blinked. I felt sorry that he doesn't have a family but it's perfect, I'd have less explaining to do. "No one?" "Just Randal." He jerked his chin toward the bartender, who was wiping glasses while pretending not to listen. "He's been stupid enough to stay around with me." Randal laughed and give us a glance. "And you've been too ugly to get rid of me, Ivan. Even my salary is not enough." Ivan answered by throwing a peanut at him fast. The bartender caught it neatly and ate it. I couldn't help a tiny smile that formed on my lips. "So it's just the two of you?" "It has been for years." Something about the answer felt a little lonely. I wasn't sure why that bothered me. I took another drink feeling the liqour warmed my body. Then another. The whiskey burned less each time I took it in. Perhaps because I had never really tasted alcohol before, but now I am just in the mood. Or perhaps because tonight I wanted to forget that I was a princess expected to marry a man chosen only for politics. "So, Ivan." I asked again, my words already feeling lighter than before, "what kind of husband are you going to be?" Ivan nearly choked on his drink after I asked him that. "I haven't officially even agreed to it yet." "You didn't refuse." I looked at him with a slight worry now that he isn't fully convinced. "I also didn't say yes, Princess." I pointed at him dramatically with my brows furrowed. "That means... negotiations." He laughed under his breath. But there was no humore in it. Despite everything it is still pleasant to her, it means I could still convince him to agree. The music inside the beerhouse grew louder while another round of drinks appeared in front of me. I honestly couldn't remember asking for them but Randal just keep them coming. He looked between us. "You sure about giving the Princess another one?" Ivan glanced at me. "I didn't if I were you." "You didn't stop her either." He sighed. "Fair point." "I can hear both of you," I complained while squinting my eyes. Neither of them answered me. Which somehow made me drink the liqour even faster. Hours later and I felt lighter. The beerhouse had become quieter. One table started to get emptied. Then another. The musicians packed away their instruments when I looked up. Several drunken wolves stumbled toward the exit while laughing loudly. Someone has even shouted good night to the bar tender. One by one. Everyone left. I blinked slowly. "When, did it get so quiet in this place?" Ivan looked at me across the table. "About thirty minutes ago, Princess." "Oh." I nodded wisely. "I knew that." "You've said that five times too." "I did?" "You also challenged Randal to an arm-wrestling match." I frowned. "Did I lost?" "You fell asleep before the match started." "That doesn't count, then." Randal burst into laughter. "Oh! I like her." Ivan shot him a warning look and he stop. "Lock the front door, Randal. I think it's about time we leave." Randal raised both hands. "I'm going." He grabbed his coat before stopping beside Ivan. "You'll manage, boss?" Ivan looked toward me. I had rested both arms on the table. My head followed shortly afterward. "I'm, perfectly fine." I mumbled. A yawn interrupted me. Randal grinned. "Sure she is." A few seconds later the heavy front door closed behind him. Silence settled over the beerhouse. Only the lanterns remained lit. Ivan stood. "Princess Dorina." No answer from me but I heard him. He walked around the table. "Princess." I blinked at him. "Hm?" "We're closed let's go." "Oh." I tried standing. The room immediately spun around me. "But. Why is the floor moving?" "It isn't." he said. "I disagree." Before I could take another step, my knees gave out. Strong arms caught me before I reached the floor. I frowned at his chest. But I suddenly felt warm and secured. "You... smell like smoke and cedar. And whiskey." "I own a beerhouse Princess." "That explains the whiskey and smoke, and I don't like kissing m*b who smoke." A reluctant smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. "Who said we are going to miss?...You've had enough." "I don't think so. Ivan. I did not say I would kiss you." "You definitely have." That made me groan. He looked down. "How many fingers am I holding up?" "Ivan. You are impossible." I whispered seriously then answered. " you aren't holding up any." "Exactly." "I win." He shook his head. "Moon Goddess. You are a handfull." My eyelids felt heavier with every passing second. "I don't... want to go back to the Palace." "I know. We can't go back tonight even if you want to." "I don't want Alex." I remembered my father's voice telling me to marry him. My thoughts are going crazy. "Oh trust me, you're not marrying that Alpha." My head slipped against his shoulder. Within moments, I completely give my safety to a man I just met. A stranger, because everything around me went dark.* Dorina *There was no luck. That's what healer Mira said, gently, with her hand on mine. It kept repeating at the end of every month until it became years."No luck yet, Luna." She gave her sympathetic look and shook her head which I clearly understood. She didn't say "never." Just "not yet." I took note of some possibilities. I am healthy and young so it wouldn't be impossible for me to conceive again. After that intimate date in the river cabin, Ivan and I tried. Moon Goddess knows we tried our best. We took the old pickup to the cabin twice more that year. We stopped counting months on the calendar like it was a curse, as Matilda told me to. I went to Mira, our Green Meadows great healer, not just the Palace healer. She checked my monthly cycle, gave me bitter teas, told me to sleep more, and to worry less because I'm still young. I laughed at that. Luna who doesn't sleep, was told to sleep more.Ivan was being sweet about it. He never asked me that question "Are you?" every mo
* Ivan *When I came home from pack duties Matilda told me to take Dorina to the river cabin. Not in those usual words. Matilda never says things directly. She told me, "Alpha, the river patrol needs checking, and Luna needs fresh air, and that old cabin has a leak, you should fix it," while looking at me like I was the stupidest Alpha alive.I understood it. So I took Dorina's hand that night after Lucian asked if we were still there, and I said, "Tomorrow, you and me. Let's take the old truck. No patrol or Luna duties. Just the two of us."She blinked. "But Lucian.""Will stay with Matilda for one night. He is ten years old. He survived a hunter, Dorina. He can survive one night without us watching him breathe."She laughed, then cried a little, then nodded. The next morning, I did something I haven't done in ten years. I told Beta Mikael, "Two reasons that I will make you disturb me. One, if a rogue crosses, call me; and two, if the border burns. But if it's paperwork, burn it you
* Dorina *We were lucky that the old pickup didn't break down on the way home. That was a good sign. Ivan drove with one hand on the wheel, the other holding mine across the console, and Lucian slept in the backseat the whole way, finally, deeply, his head tipped against the window, his hand still holding Ivan's sleeve through the gap like when he was just a baby boy. When we finally arrived at the Green Meadows, Ivan carried him inside, straight to his bed. He didn't wake even when Ivan took off his dirty boots. Ten years old, first kill, and he slept like he was six months old again, curled on his side.I stood in the doorway and watched Ivan sit on the edge of the bed, just watching him breathe. Just to make sure he was still there. The way Ivan watched him the night he was born. That night, after Lucian finally stopped whimpering in his sleep, Ivan pulled me close."He asked me in the truck," Ivan whispered into my hair. "Before he fell asleep. He said, 'Papa, if I had a little b
* Ivan *I broke every speed rule riding my old car to the Palace. Dorina's text came at two fourteen PM. Come get us early? Then Prince Douglas's text came at three-seven PM. Just a few words. It says, Come now. Bring the old car. South field. My mother-in-law, Queen Arriane called. Her voice was shaking. "Ivan, drive carefully, but come. Lucian is, Aaron is okay, but Lucian… something happened just come."My wolf didn't pace. He roared inside of me. He ripped through me and I almost shifted behind the wheel of my own truck.I left Beta Mikael in charge, grabbed the keys to my old pickup, not the Land Cruiser, because the Land Cruiser was already there, dusty in the Palace garden, and drove. Two hours of road that felt like ten long hours. I kept seeing Lucian's letter in my drawer. I will practice staying behind Aaron. He didn't stay behind. When I pulled through the Palace gates, it was too quiet. No music at the party. No more birthday, was it finished? The tables from Princess Ra
* Dorina *I should have known boys would be boys, and they didn't listen. After the cake, and right after Douglas squeezed my shoulder and said "South Field has a double patrol," I watched them. Prince Aaron and Lucian. They were sitting by the old green Land Cruiser, eating the last of the frosting straight from the plate with their fingers, whispering to each other. That whisper that I failed to understand. But I know that whisper. It's the same whisper Prince Douglas and I used when we were pups and Father told us not to go to the river.Lucian looked at me and waved. "We will stay in the garden, Mama!"I believed him because I wanted the birthday to be perfect. So I just nodded. Princess Ravel was finally asleep on Mandy's chest, with frosting in her hair. My mother, the Queen was humming. Father had gone inside to take a call about the south line. Everything felt safe again so I breathed easy.Ten minutes had passed. I just looked away for ten minutes to help Mandy clean Princ
* Dorina *The Palace was loud because of the big celebration. A different kind of loud from when Lucian was six months old and fighting Matilda over silly things. This was happy loud. Music for kids, pups running, tables full of food that Mandy insisted on because "Ravel only turns one once."Princess Ravel a pretty one-year-old with chubby cheeks, and hair like Mandy's, was sitting on Queen Arriane's lap, wearing a crown that kept sliding off. Every time it slid, Prince Aaron would fix it for her, so serious, so gentle. My twelve-year-old nephew, who the other day had Lucian in a headlock in the forest, now holding his baby sister like she was made of glass. And my little boy Lucian. Lucian was in the middle of the garden, in that old green Land Cruiser's dust still on his boots, telling the story of the oak tree marking to any pup who would listen. And even to those who wouldn't."And then Aaron said 'stay behind me' but I saw it first.”"You saw a bush," Prince Aaron called from a
