Chapter 8

Author: Cold Prince
Outside the hospital room, no one expected Lance to follow through on his words.

The parents were screaming and cursing loudly, threatening to sue us.

Lance lazily leaned against the wall, completely ignoring the noise as if it were nothing more than background chatter.

His clothes were a bit disheveled. I had called him yesterday, and he had rushed over first thing this morning.

His tie was crooked, and I reached up to straighten it for him.

This drew angry shouts from the parents nearby, accusing us of conspiring together.

But honestly, Lance hadn't even gone that far. The doctor had even joked that if they'd been any later, the kid would've recovered and run around by now.

But the parents were still wailing, and the child was screaming at the top of his lungs.

Finally, it seemed like Lance had had enough of the noise. He lifted his gaze to the parents.

"You just want money, right? How much?"

The woman seemed stunned by his demeanor, frozen for a second or two.

Then, she p

"You're getting promoted?" I was a little surprised. She flicked her long hair."Yeah, Mr. Talbot said I have the skills, unlike you idiots."Oh, right. A few months ago, she managed to get close to an executive, and now it seemed like she was finally seeing some results. Too bad..."Lisa, you can start calling me Ms. Booth now. That way, as your superior, I might be a little kinder to you."I noticed her desk was piled high with gifts. They were probably from all the people who knew she was getting promoted and were trying to suck up to her.I shook my head and ignored her."Hey!" She knocked angrily on the glass divider between us."Come on, Ms. Booth, don't get mad at someone like her," someone chimed in."Exactly. She's clearly given up on this job."There used to be fewer people backing Margot up, but now that she was on the rise, it seemed like everyone wanted to be in her good graces."I want you to grovel and apologize!" She suddenly threw out an unreasonable dem

This guy finally laid his cards on the table and stopped pretending. Not only did he switch between fancy cars to follow me every day, but he also started filling my rental with high-end furniture. Oh, it wasn't really a rental—he'd bought the place a while ago. So technically, he was my landlord. This was why I couldn't stand rich people. On my way home, someone in a quirky bunny costume blocked my path. When I moved left, he moved left. When I moved right, he moved right. In the end, he shoved a bouquet of flowers into my arms, and right in the center of the flowers was a gleaming diamond ring. "What are you doing, Lance?" I stood on tiptoe and yanked the headpiece off, revealing his familiar face.It was hot outside, and the costume must have been sweltering. Sweat dripped down his forehead, his short hair sticking to his skin."Proposing," he answered without hesitation. "You're proposing—" I didn't get to finish my sentence before he collapsed onto me.The

My broke boyfriend, who I'd been dating for the past five years, was now telling me he was extremely rich. I tried to recall what I said to him afterward.I told him, "Stop messing with me, Lance."I said, "It's okay if we're broke. We can make money."I insisted, "No way you're rich. You wouldn't have been lying to me all this time, right…?""The watch I gave you last time? It cost over 400 thousand. You can check the official website or get someone to authenticate it."My laugh felt empty, my smile frozen on my face. The underground parking garage was dim, and the harsh fluorescent light cast a pale glow into his dark gray eyes.It took me a long while to find my voice again."Why did you hide this from me all this time?""Do you remember when we first met in college? We met at the English corner. You said you hated rich people the most."He lowered his eyes, his voice soft, almost like he might break at any moment."At first, I just thought, if I said I was poor, maybe

  • The Best Kind of Lie   Chapter 7

Because of my previous comments in the group chat, which were clearly vengeful and intentional, they now had something to hold over me.I opened the lawyer's letter and read every single page carefully. My mother always said I acted impulsively, that I let my emotions drive me. Now, I truly regretted it.I should've just said in the group that I liked super hot food. That evening, I video-called Lance, and I quickly hid the lawyer's letter away. But for some reason, when I saw his face on the screen and realized how far apart we were, I felt a rush of frustration and helplessness wash over me.When I first got the lawyer's letter, I didn't want to cry at all. I knew I didn't have money to hire a lawyer for a lawsuit, and I wasn't upset then. But seeing Lance, hearing his voice, all that built-up frustration suddenly broke free.At first, I tried to joke with him, talking about everyday things like we always did.But as I spoke, I found myself crying—the tears just wouldn't stop

  • The Best Kind of Lie   Chapter 6

I asked in the building's group chat if anyone had mistakenly taken my delivery, but no one responded.I reported it to the property management, requesting that they install cameras at the delivery pick-up spot, but they refused, claiming they couldn’t afford it and that I’d have to pay for the installation myself. After I asked in the group chat several times, one of the neighbors spoke up and confronted me. They accused me of obsessing over the small amount of money spent on the delivery. They said I kept bringing it up—just over a few-dollar meal.I swallowed my frustration and anger as I video-called Lance. He was still in that rundown hotel, standing in a dim hallway while a drunk man staggered by, holding onto a woman who was barely able to walk.He asked what was wrong and if I was feeling mistreated. For the first time, I felt like I couldn’t see a future. It was like the dark hallway behind him, endless and empty. He was already exhausted. How could I burden him with m
