Chapter 3

Author: County Court
I turned around and saw Olivia.

What was she doing here?

Autumn eyed Olivia up with obvious displeasure and said scornfully, “Fiancé? Who are you talking about?”

Olivia linked her arm through mine, offering a charming smile. “The man right beside me, of course. My fiancé is here today to break off his engagement with you.”

She blurted it out so suddenly that I instinctively looked over at Autumn. A strange look flashed across Autumn’s eyes, but she quickly returned to normal.

She scoffed and confronted me. “Break off the engagement? You certainly came up with a good excuse this time.”

Then, she swept her gaze over Olivia again. “Nice act. She’s pretty hot, too. When you’re done fooling around, don’t forget to go home.”

I looked down and let out a silent, bitter laugh. What was I even to her?

Unable to stand it, Olivia struck back on my behalf. “He’s not going home with you. As I said, he’s here to break off the engagement. Things are over between you both.”

Autumn froze for a moment, but once she processed the words, she burst out laughing.

“Mark, taking an act too far isn’t good. Back when we got engaged, you begged me dozens of times before I finally agreed. If you break off the engagement this time, there won’t be a next time.”

My fingers clenched.

How could I have forgotten that I was the one who had forced this engagement? Even at the height of my love for her, I could only bring myself to peck her on the cheek. Then, devoutly, I asked if she would marry me.

I thought our love was progressing naturally, but I never expected her reaction.

She paused for a moment and said, “I need time to think.”

I respected her decision, thinking she was just taken aback by the sudden proposal.

Later, whenever we ate together, I would subtly ask about her thoughts on getting engaged. Yet, she always put me off with various excuses. That was until the last time, when I got down on one knee and surrendered myself to her.

“Autumn, I’m not asking you to marry me. I’m begging you to take me as your husband. Please?”

That day, she looked shocked.

Finally, she relented. “Fine.”

Overjoyed, I spent all my savings to set up the proposal, from balloons to fireworks, a red carpet, and glowing lights. Everything was the best because Autumn deserved all the finest things in this world.

At the proposal, I placed the ring on her finger in front of everyone. Then, when we returned home, Autumn kissed me and reached for my collar.

I stopped her. “Autumn, we’ll be together after we’re officially married.”

Disappointment flashed in her eyes.

“Mark, what kind of man are you? If that’s the case, why did you propose and put me in such an awkward position?”

Put her in an awkward position?

I was stunned. She had accepted my proposal… just because of that?

That night, she went out again and didn’t return home. The very next day, I saw the video of her playing dress-up in a wedding gown with someone else.

Autumn’s mocking voice pulled my thoughts back to reality. “Why aren’t you speaking? Are you regretting it now? If it weren’t for me, you would still be out there selling your lousy paintings god knows where. You wouldn’t even be good enough to get a job in Sky Group!”

Unable to hold back her anger, Olivia spoke up for me again. “What’s Sky Group anyway? Mark is the heir of Harbor City’s weal–”

I pulled Olivia back, cutting off her words. Then, I took off my engagement ring and handed it to Autumn.

“Let’s break off the engagement. I don’t want you or the status you speak of anymore.”

Three years later, I happened to hear news about Autumn again purely by chance. It was on television, and it was because of Seth.According to the onlookers, Seth had contracted syphilis and had long since ceased working in the entertainment industry. He only became famous again because he abused his wife on the street. He punched and kicked her. He even grabbed her hair and slammed her head against the concrete pavement. His wife was beaten until she was covered in blood, leading many people on the scene to call the police immediately.A toddler, around three years old, came running over while crying and shouting, “Daddy, stop!”Seth pulled his belt straight off and lashed it viciously at his wife on the ground. As he whipped her, he cursed, “The paternity test says this little bastard isn’t mine! How dare you mess around behind my back? You got me infected with this dirty disease too! I’m going to beat you to death today!”He went mad. Any onlookers who stepped in and stopped h

I raised an eyebrow. My ex-lover? She sure had the nerve to come looking for me. My expression turned grim as I flatly refused, “I won’t see her.”Beside me, Olivia overheard the conversation and frowned as she said, “Is that your true love here for you? When she dumped you back then, she told you never to go back. Well, she sure can’t keep her word.”The butler looked deeply embarrassed. “Ms. Sullivan, that woman says if Mr. Dunn refuses to see her, she’ll stay waiting outside.”Olivia gasped in shock. “What? How could she?”Then, she turned to me and smirked. “Oh well, I suppose your taste in women was always mediocre. I’ll leave you to clean up this mess. I trust you can handle it.”With that, Olivia decided she wouldn’t interfere in my affairs anymore and walked away. After a moment’s hesitation, I decided to set the record straight with Autumn. Then, we’d go our separate ways. When Autumn was led inside, her face no longer had the same glow it once did. Her cheeks were

After returning home, the very first thing I did was put my strategic marriage with the Sullivan family on the agenda. My father handed me a signet ring, a symbol of inheriting the family business, and praised me. “After going out and gaining some real-world experience, you’ve returned a lot more mature.”I took the ring and smiled. “After falling down a couple of times, one naturally learns how to walk.”My father turned his back to me and waved his hand. “By marrying Olivia, you’ve at least lived up to what your mother asked of me. I heard you did quite well running a company called Sky Group. Why don’t I acquire it as a stepping stone in your career?”My expression froze for a moment, but I quickly relaxed. A gentle smile played at the corner of my mouth. “That works too. Consider it part of the wedding gift for Olivia.”Olivia and I got engaged that afternoon. Just for the engagement party alone, the Dunn and Sullivan families spent a staggering two million dollars. Everyone

Seth was so flustered that he could barely form a coherent sentence. “A-Autumn, the shareholders on the board… they’ve all pulled their funding!”Autumn’s mind went blank. Her company was currently in its growth phase, with incredibly bright prospects. Why on earth would the shareholders suddenly pull out?Seth’s face was filled with dread. “The Sullivan Group bought up all the board’s shares! On top of that, they leaked news that we’ve been committing tax evasion!”At first, Autumn was shocked. Then, as if all her strength had been drained, she collapsed onto the floor.“It’s him… It must be Mark…”Seth was bewildered. “Who are you talking about? Mark, that freeloading gold-digger? Is this a joke? What kind of big shot does Mark think he is? How could he possibly have the means to pull something like this off?”Exhausted, Autumn handed her phone over to Seth, who glanced at the top trending headline on social media, and his eyes widened in shock. “How could Mark be the heir to

And holding my arm was the elegant lady, clearly the same woman who had visited the film set yesterday. The heir of Harbor City’s wealthiest family? The heiress of the Sullivan family? This was impossible. Autumn believed she must have misread the article. She couldn’t bring herself to believe what she was seeing.Never could she have imagined that the struggling young artist who once made a living selling paintings was actually the distinguished and immensely powerful heir standing right there.Just what on earth was going on?With her hands shaking, she pulled out her phone and dialed the familiar number, only to hear an automated message informing her that the number was no longer in service. This sudden disconnection made Autumn’s heart skip a beat. She had a faint, unsettling feeling that something was quietly slipping out of her control, and countless memories flashed through her mind.In the past, whenever the company faced a major crisis, I would always step in to solve

Autumn didn’t accept it right away. Instead, she looked at me with disbelief. Then, she sneered. “Mark, don’t you regret this. Next time you want to marry me, it won’t be as simple as just getting down on your knees.”Seth, standing beside her, strode forward and snatched the ring from me.“So now you’re playing hard to get? Autumn has shown me the security footage of you begging her to marry you. A spineless coward like you trying to make yourself seem tough, huh? Too bad you’re worth nothing without Autumn!”Security footage? My heart skipped a beat. As it turned out, the love I once gave without reservation had become nothing more than a joke to her.Autumn stepped forward and sneered. “Canceling the engagement is fine, but don’t even think about taking anything with you. I’m officially announcing that you’re fired from Sky Group. Also, I’ll tell you one more thing…”Autumn leaned in and whispered something softly in my ear. When I heard that, I looked up at her suddenly, my
