Chapter 2

Author: County Court
In the month leading up to my engagement preparations, scandal broke when tabloid magazines exposed Autumn’s relationship with a popular male actor, Seth Price. I took the intimate paparazzi photos to Autumn and demanded an explanation, but she only gave them a passing glance.

She said nonchalantly, “It’s just ordinary gossip. What’s there to make a fuss about? What kind of man are you? You’re so narrow-minded.”

After that, she slammed the door and walked away.

Those words sent a chill down my spine. Nothing could hurt me, but she could.

I began to doubt myself, wondering if I hadn’t given her enough companionship and love. For that reason, I took two days off work and, as a pampered man since childhood, learned how to cook for a woman. If the high society back home saw this, they would surely think it was a joke.

The food was heated up again and again. At dawn, she finally returned home.

I stood up and stepped forward to take her bag. However, I caught a whiff of a man’s perfume.

I froze, my voice trembling slightly. “You’re back late… Where did you go?”

She sat down, exhausted, and massaged her temples. “Don’t ask what you shouldn’t ask. Why did you take time off the last two days?”

I made her a bowl of chicken soup and handed it to her. “I wanted to spend time with you.”

She suddenly looked at me with disgust. “Mark Dunn, what kind of cheap trick is this to vie for my favor? It’s boring! What is this food? It looks disgusting!”

For the next month, she often came home late or didn’t return home at all, and I kept receiving intimate photos of her with other men. Having lost all hope, I booked a flight home in five days, one that was originally meant for two.

The day before heading home, I visited Autumn’s movie set, hoping to see her. On our fifth anniversary, I wanted to say a proper goodbye to this relationship.

She sent me a message: [I’m too busy. I can’t make it.]

What she didn’t know was that I was standing right under that big canopy, watching her flirt and get intimate with another man. That man turned his head and saw me. He was the male lead from Autumn’s wedding video, Seth Price.

Seth walked straight toward me and mocked, “Oh, the freeloader came all the way to the set.”

By then, Autumn had seen me, and a hint of guilt flashed in her eyes.

I responded coldly, “Speaking of freeloaders, aren’t you one as well?”

Seth’s expression shifted, and he raised his hand, slapping me across the face.

“Who do you think you are? It took you five years just to get engaged. The other day, when I made her call you, did you hear that? That moaning… Tsk tsk, and her sweet panting. Did you–”

Before he could finish his sentence, I threw a punch straight into his face.

The next moment, a panicked figure flashed in front of me and slapped me across the face. It was Autumn.

Her face was grim as she confronted me. “Mark Dunn, are you out of your mind? He’s an actor under my company! How could you hit him? This slap is to teach you a lesson!”

I wiped the blood from the corner of my mouth and looked at her with a cold smile. “An actor? The kind who can humiliate you however they please?”

Autumn slapped me across the face once more and added, “You should be at the office. What are you doing running to set and acting as you please?”

I looked at Autumn in silence. Those two slaps could be considered the final farewell to our relationship.

Seth hid behind her, fanning the flames. “Autumn, you’re engaged to a man like him? A good-for-nothing like him isn’t good enough for you.”

Autumn looked at him dotingly and rubbed his face. “Don’t be angry. I’ve taught him a lesson. Does it hurt?”

Watching that scene made me feel sick to my stomach.

At that moment, a bright and cheerful voice sounded behind me. “Ma’am, that’s my fiancé you hit.”

Three years later, I happened to hear news about Autumn again purely by chance. It was on television, and it was because of Seth.According to the onlookers, Seth had contracted syphilis and had long since ceased working in the entertainment industry. He only became famous again because he abused his wife on the street. He punched and kicked her. He even grabbed her hair and slammed her head against the concrete pavement. His wife was beaten until she was covered in blood, leading many people on the scene to call the police immediately.A toddler, around three years old, came running over while crying and shouting, “Daddy, stop!”Seth pulled his belt straight off and lashed it viciously at his wife on the ground. As he whipped her, he cursed, “The paternity test says this little bastard isn’t mine! How dare you mess around behind my back? You got me infected with this dirty disease too! I’m going to beat you to death today!”He went mad. Any onlookers who stepped in and stopped h

I raised an eyebrow. My ex-lover? She sure had the nerve to come looking for me. My expression turned grim as I flatly refused, “I won’t see her.”Beside me, Olivia overheard the conversation and frowned as she said, “Is that your true love here for you? When she dumped you back then, she told you never to go back. Well, she sure can’t keep her word.”The butler looked deeply embarrassed. “Ms. Sullivan, that woman says if Mr. Dunn refuses to see her, she’ll stay waiting outside.”Olivia gasped in shock. “What? How could she?”Then, she turned to me and smirked. “Oh well, I suppose your taste in women was always mediocre. I’ll leave you to clean up this mess. I trust you can handle it.”With that, Olivia decided she wouldn’t interfere in my affairs anymore and walked away. After a moment’s hesitation, I decided to set the record straight with Autumn. Then, we’d go our separate ways. When Autumn was led inside, her face no longer had the same glow it once did. Her cheeks were

After returning home, the very first thing I did was put my strategic marriage with the Sullivan family on the agenda. My father handed me a signet ring, a symbol of inheriting the family business, and praised me. “After going out and gaining some real-world experience, you’ve returned a lot more mature.”I took the ring and smiled. “After falling down a couple of times, one naturally learns how to walk.”My father turned his back to me and waved his hand. “By marrying Olivia, you’ve at least lived up to what your mother asked of me. I heard you did quite well running a company called Sky Group. Why don’t I acquire it as a stepping stone in your career?”My expression froze for a moment, but I quickly relaxed. A gentle smile played at the corner of my mouth. “That works too. Consider it part of the wedding gift for Olivia.”Olivia and I got engaged that afternoon. Just for the engagement party alone, the Dunn and Sullivan families spent a staggering two million dollars. Everyone

Seth was so flustered that he could barely form a coherent sentence. “A-Autumn, the shareholders on the board… they’ve all pulled their funding!”Autumn’s mind went blank. Her company was currently in its growth phase, with incredibly bright prospects. Why on earth would the shareholders suddenly pull out?Seth’s face was filled with dread. “The Sullivan Group bought up all the board’s shares! On top of that, they leaked news that we’ve been committing tax evasion!”At first, Autumn was shocked. Then, as if all her strength had been drained, she collapsed onto the floor.“It’s him… It must be Mark…”Seth was bewildered. “Who are you talking about? Mark, that freeloading gold-digger? Is this a joke? What kind of big shot does Mark think he is? How could he possibly have the means to pull something like this off?”Exhausted, Autumn handed her phone over to Seth, who glanced at the top trending headline on social media, and his eyes widened in shock. “How could Mark be the heir to

And holding my arm was the elegant lady, clearly the same woman who had visited the film set yesterday. The heir of Harbor City’s wealthiest family? The heiress of the Sullivan family? This was impossible. Autumn believed she must have misread the article. She couldn’t bring herself to believe what she was seeing.Never could she have imagined that the struggling young artist who once made a living selling paintings was actually the distinguished and immensely powerful heir standing right there.Just what on earth was going on?With her hands shaking, she pulled out her phone and dialed the familiar number, only to hear an automated message informing her that the number was no longer in service. This sudden disconnection made Autumn’s heart skip a beat. She had a faint, unsettling feeling that something was quietly slipping out of her control, and countless memories flashed through her mind.In the past, whenever the company faced a major crisis, I would always step in to solve

Autumn didn’t accept it right away. Instead, she looked at me with disbelief. Then, she sneered. “Mark, don’t you regret this. Next time you want to marry me, it won’t be as simple as just getting down on your knees.”Seth, standing beside her, strode forward and snatched the ring from me.“So now you’re playing hard to get? Autumn has shown me the security footage of you begging her to marry you. A spineless coward like you trying to make yourself seem tough, huh? Too bad you’re worth nothing without Autumn!”Security footage? My heart skipped a beat. As it turned out, the love I once gave without reservation had become nothing more than a joke to her.Autumn stepped forward and sneered. “Canceling the engagement is fine, but don’t even think about taking anything with you. I’m officially announcing that you’re fired from Sky Group. Also, I’ll tell you one more thing…”Autumn leaned in and whispered something softly in my ear. When I heard that, I looked up at her suddenly, my
