~Marcie~

I walked out of the exam room with Sarah beside me. Her vibrant aura radiated from every inch of her figure; she exuded warmth and confidence. Her bright smile and bright eyes seemed to light up the entire hallway, and even though the exam we had wasn't all that, Sarah just had a way to make things feel good and hopeful.

Standing beside her, I felt almost doll-like with my petite frame structure and delicate features that made me fragile. I was what I would call average-height, but because I was beside Sarah, people would describe me as short, and that's because Sarah was gifted with height, and I wasn't. I took my mother's height; almost all my physical appearance was from mom and dad—only won with my stubbornness and eyes. I had his eyes—those unique multicolored blue-gray eyes which I'm grateful that I inherited.

Sarah, being enthusiastic, pulled me into an embrace with her ginger hair stuff into my mouth as she crushed me. I could barely breathe as she carried my petite body and turned around.

“I can't believe we are done with this semester; I can't wait to leave the campus,” She beamed happily, dropping me to the ground.

While I rolled my eyes sarcastically, of course I know why she was beaming so happily, “Or you are excited to meet your sweet little church boy,” I teased, and she faked a frown.

Her lips pulled up in a pout that seemed to make her look like she's some super hot chic, “No, Marcie. Tom's not a little church boy; yes, he is holy and a devoted Christian. It doesn't make him little; it only makes me more fond of him; you know how much I really like someone who's devoted,” She prattled. Here she goes again. Losing herself and talking about Tom as if he were some prince charming.

I could almost block my eardrums if that's the only way I would stop hearing her talk about Tom. Sarah is such a romantic girl. I'm so happy that she found the one. Tom is cool, respectful, nice, sweet, and he is very cute. Fits Sarah's sexy appearance, and he's overall serious with her, and I'm so happy for her.

But you know, sometimes when you are single and you have to hear your best friend/roommate talk about her boyfriend in this manner, you just have to zone out.

“Okay, Sarah, I get it. Enough about Tom,” I cut her off when I realized she was about to tell me how much she missed him and the things they do during the holidays since Tom lived in town 8 hours away from college.

Sarah tucks her hair to the back childishly as her face turns red due to embarrassment, “I'm sorry,” she murmured.

“C’mon, it's not your fault that relationship isn't for me; besides, I'm the one always breaking up with them, not the other way around, and please let not spend the rest of the remaining minute we have here sulking about the issues of boys. We have a few minutes before you go meet your boo,” I said, and then her face lit up as if she wasn't feeling guilty a moment ago.

That's my girl.

“True, so now are you going to go back to your dad’s house or perhaps you'll continue working in the cafe,” She queried, her arms locked as we walked back to our dorm.

“Nope, I decided to intern for a company this holiday. I feel it's better I do before Dad locks me up again,” I responded, and she stopped in her tracks. She cupped my cheek and sent me a pity look.

“Sighs; sometimes I envy you, and sometimes I don't. You are such a cute little thing, and yes, you have so much to explore, and I'm glad you decided to do something,” She cooed. I removed her hands from my cheeks and glared at her.

“You need to stop talking to me like I'm your child; just because you are graced with height doesn't mean I'm your younger sister,” I warned jokingly, still a fake glare on.

“I still see you as my child, poor, poor Marcie. I'm sure you love me calling you my younger sister,” She teased, and I pointed a finger at her, but she held it, measuring my hands with hers.

“See how tiny those fingers are,” she teased again, and I stormed away.

“Hey, short legs wait for me, alright, alright—fine, I won't tease you again. Wait for me,” she yelled and then walked over to my side. I opened the door of our dorm, and we walked in.

“So where do you want to Intern,” She asked, and a sly smirk curled up on my lips.

She gave me a knowing look, “Okayyyy, tell me what it is you are hiding from me. I know that smirk, and it screams you are planning to work with a company your daddy won't agree with,” She said, and then sat down beside me on the bed to hear whatever it is I had to say.

“Well, bestie…” I trailed off and held her hands, squeezing it tight. I smacked my lips and let out a short laughter.

“You are right, Sarah, but you have to trust me in this; once I get the approval, then I might tell you,” I insisted, and she groaned.

“Hey, don't do that to me. We don't hide anything from each other,” she pleaded, and I decided to act like I wasn't hearing her. She stood up abruptly, and then before I knew it, she started tickling my stomach, a very weak point of mine that got me cracking on the floor.

“Okay, O-okay, fine,” I gave in.

“Promise?” She muttered, still tickling me.

“Promise,” I replied, and then she stopped.

I adjusted my clothes and shifted far away from her, “I applied to work at Kingston Enterprise as a software developer,” I confessed, and her eyes widened.

“The heck! Marcie, are you insane? You know your dad won't let you do that,” She half-yelled. Sarah was shocked, flabbergasted, and, more importantly, not impressed with my decision.

Of course, people might think I'm crazy, but I just want to know why that company makes Dad out of his mind. Well, I know one of the reasons, but that can't be why he is so worked up about them.

“Dad won't find out; I changed my identity, and besides, nobody knows who my parents are, and don't forget I'm a hacker. One of the best in history,” I reminded her, but then Sarah wasn't having it.

And that's why I didn't want her to know in the first place; she would be so worried.

“It’s going to be fine, Sarah. Trust me, okay,” I reassured.

“Promise you would call me every day to tell me every detail about your life there,” she brought her pinky fingers. I smiled at her and locked mine with hers.

“I promise, now cheer up and let go and celebrate before I go to work.”

  • The Beta and I   Chapter 112

Carsen's POVI was glad that everything had returned to normal, and she would no longer ask me any questions about what happened. That made the people at the mall tell her that I was not okay."I also want to remind you that we still have the dinner date to attend, and if you need any assistance with anything, you can let me know so that I can get help before that time. I do not want anything to ruin what I had planned for myself. Please, if there is anything you need, just let me know so I can use this opportunity to get it for you. As I said to you earlier, you are the one we are looking up to, and you should not fail us. The way you dress is the way they are going to respect us and so give us the offers that we want, and that was the reason why I had to go to the fashion house to pick the best quality clothes for you to put on," I said to Emily, as I did not want to talk about the whole mall stuff anymore. I was also trying to know if she was ready for the dinner, which I told her

  • The Beta and I   Chapter 111

Carsen's POV "Emily, I want you to listen to me, and I want you to understand that I am not hiding anything from you. There is nothing I am hiding from you, and you know everything about me. You even know where I live, so I do not think there is anything I should be hiding from you," I said to her as I opened up the door for her to come in."Then why did you have to come straight into your room without coming to know if I was okay, and why did you have to lock the door of your room if you were not trying to avoid getting into a conversation with me?" she asked me with all seriousness on her face. And I knew that she was going to be so mad at me, but then I had to come down and not get offended by anything that was happening because I had something to do."Actually, there is nothing there to hide from you. I only came in to rest as I was really tired after the whole ride. You know that we have somewhere to go this evening, and that is the reason why I just wanted to leave you to rest

  • The Beta and I   Chapter 110

Marcie's POV I gave him listening ears so that I could hear what he had to say and so that I could be able to know if he was telling me the truth or if he was trying to hide something from me. I was glad that I had already made it clear to him that if he was hiding anything from me, he was just putting me into trouble and risking our lives. "Just go ahead and tell me what exactly the issue is, because I really want to know why you will make such comments at the mall. If there is anything wrong, I think you should share it with someone so that you will be safe and so that you will get help from them if it is necessary," I said to him as I tried to persuade him to speak up about what exactly the issue was with him."I do not know why you are making a lot of issues out of this. The reason why I asked them to be fast was so that we could live more once I could perceive a fragment which I was allergic to, and I did not want to react to the smell of it. I do not see any reason why th

  • The Beta and I   Chapter 109

Marcie's POV As I and Sarah were still on the phone, I began to hear someone trying the door, and then I knew that he was definitely back home. I still had a mind to ask him how things went and to also be sure that he did not hurt the workers who came to do the whole makeup stuff for me."Sarah, I think he is back, and I have to go off right now. I will call you later, and we will talk at length because I want to explain some things about my whole journey with my father," I said to her after hearing someone opening the door."So you cannot have conversations with your friend anymore because he is around. You have to be very free and make yourself very flexible around him because he is not your God, and he should not dictate to you what to do at all. Well, I know that you actually want to go and meet the love of your life, and that is the reason why you are giving me a lot of silly excuses. I will be giving both of you space to do what you want to do. Have a nice day and take good

  • The Beta and I   Chapter 108

Marcie's POV"As he brought the fashion designers to the house, he left the three of us in my room, and then he went to his own room, but they mentioned something to me. They were referring to him as my husband, and then I did not complain because I knew that there was something really important that they wanted to say to me. They said that while they were at the mall, he began to persuade them to do it really fast because he was not safe there," I said to her, waiting to see what she had in mind and what she was thinking about it."Oh my goodness, that is really deep. What exactly is the issue, or was he being stalked at the mall? Do you think it is something really important because some people do not like crowds, and they feel insecure whenever they are in a crowd? I do not think it is something you should overthink, because it is actually the way some people behave when they are in crowded places like that. But nevertheless, you have to ask him to know if he is actually okay, and

  • The Beta and I   Chapter 107

Marcie's POVAs they left the suite, I sat in my room thinking of what could have actually been the issue and what he was really hiding from me, because it should have been something really serious.I decided to confront him when he returned, hoping he would tell me exactly what the issue was, because I did not want to put myself into what I was not aware of. He was so secretive, and I knew that if he was going through certain types of stuff, he would not be able to share his anxiety with people. This time around, I was ready to know what exactly the issue was and what exactly he was hiding, because I knew that there was something more to everything that was happening besides I had been having a sort of weird feeling ever since we came to the hotel to lodge, and I thought it was normal, but from what happened and what the workers in the fashion house told me, I knew that there was actually an issue, and it needed to be solved as soon as possible. It felt really strange to me, and the
