Chapter 1

My dad, Carlos Cecere, sounded excited on the phone.

"Have you really thought it through, Katerina? The D'Angelo family is declining, and if it weren't for your insistence back then, I would never have thought that a marriage alliance with them would have been a good choice anyway.

"You're my only daughter, and I'm really happy that you can shoulder the family responsibility instead.

"I'll be sending a convoy to pick you up and bring you back to Chitchily in three days, back to your birthplace, the headquarters of the Cecere Famiglia."

After ending my phone call with Papa, my phone suddenly began ringing again, and this time, it was a call from my best friend, Delila Rusconi.

I stared coldly at the blinking phone screen and didn't answer her call.

I had known her for more than half of my life, and I'd always thought of her as my "best friend". She came from the slums, but now, she was acting like a leech that I could never get rid of. In fact, she didn't even have mercy on my fiance and attached herself to him as well.

I could feel the tearing pain in my heart as I recalled the scene at the office a while earlier.

My fiance, Luca D'Angelo, pushed the door open slowly and walked in with a bouquet of roses. He gathered me into his arms and said, "What are you still doing here, Cara Mia? Have you been waiting for my present all along?"

He set down the roses and suddenly produced a beautiful jewelry box out of thin air like magic. A Panthere de Cartier bracelet lay nestled in the satin cloth inside.

"Do you like it? This is a one-of-a-kind commemorative piece—a gift for my one and only true love."

His sky-blue eyes were filled with deep affection, as if I were his whole world.

The diamond panther coiled around my wrist, and its emerald eyes sparkled dazzlingly under the light.

I was dazed for a while. Could it be that what I'd seen just now was just a misunderstanding after all?

Perhaps I should just give him a chance to explain himself.

I relaxed my body and leaned back into his embrace, feeling aggrieved. He patted me on the head and spoke in an utmost gentle voice. "Why don't you put on the sparkly crystal dress I got you for the bachelorette party tonight?"

I nodded obediently. Just as I was about to speak, however, Luca suddenly pulled out a cargo ship passage contract and casually said to me, "Cara Mia, the D'Angelo Famiglia's cargo ship will be arriving at the port tomorrow. Let's sign the passage contract before going to the party."

My gaze landed on the contract, and I could feel my heart sinking to my stomach.

When Luca noticed that I was staying silent, he hugged me tightly again and said, "The D'Angelo and Cecere Famiglias will be officially merging at our wedding in three days. A trivial passage contract won't change anything."

If I hadn't overheard his conversation with Delila earlier, I wouldn't even have thought much about it. However, now, I cautiously said, "Since we're going to be merging into one family after our wedding in three days, there's no need for me to sign this passage contract now."

If I wasn't mistaken, this was a permanent free-passage contract for the D'Angelo cargo ships. Once the contract went into effect, all of the Cecere Famiglia's ports would be permanently open to them, completely free of charge.

Our wedding was in three days. Could Luca not even be bothered to wait these three days after all?

Luca looked down at me with a disapproving expression on his face.

"Katerina, you might not understand business matters. A brand-new line of Birkin bags has just been released in Furlance, and the market price for them has already doubled. This is the perfect time to be selling them. How could we afford to wait another three more days?"

He then lifted my chin and kissed me lightly on the corner of my lips.

"Trust me, Cara Mia. This is a win-win situation for both of us."

I took a step back, picked up the passage contract, and hid my face in the shadows by the window so that he wouldn't be able to read my face.

"Do you love me, Luca?"

My voice was entirely devoid of emotion.

Luca immediately swore, "Of course, Katerina! I swear on the honor of my Famiglia that I will only love you for the rest of my life!

"My last name, my Famiglia—everything I have belongs to you!"

I didn't say another word and silently signed my name on the contract.

Luca thought that I was completely unaware of his tricks. I was just going to let him think that way, though. He would soon learn the price he would have to pay for deceiving me.

Luca looked haggard and disheveled. His hair was a mess, his clothes were wrinkled, and his eyes were bloodshot. It was obvious that he hadn't had a proper rest in a very long time.I heard that the invalidated free-passage contract had caused him significant losses. However, his first reaction upon seeing me was not one of anger but one of shock and disbelief. He stared blankly at me, then at Adriano next to me. His voice trembled as he said, "Cara Mia… It really is you… And you're married?"I knew that he was still clinging to a sliver of hope. He had ignored his Famiglia's strong opposition and abandoned the messes he caused, only to fly all the way out here to Chitchily by himself without hesitation. He didn't even bring any suitcases with him, and his eyes were filled with remorse and urgency.Yet the moment he saw me standing with Adriano, hand in hand, with eyes full of love and dependence, Luca's expression finally crumbled. He finally came to his senses then.He approa

After I got together with Adriano, he never forced me to do anything against my will, nor did he pressure me into accepting his feelings immediately.Aside from handling his own affairs, he would quietly stay by my side every day. He'd even cook all sorts of delicious meals for me. And after learning about my preferences for milder flavors, he adjusted every recipe and made them all to my liking. Even so, they were still as delicious as ever.I would always feel the most at ease every time I saw him bustling about in the kitchen with an apron around his waist.Sometimes, I would tell him gently, "You don't always have to worry about me when you're so tired and busy yourself."He'd then smile faintly at me and serve up another dish, saying, "I'll never be tired as long as you continue to enjoy your food."No matter how busy he got, he would always find time to have meals with me, accompany me on walks, and more. He rarely ever said anything sentimental, but he warmed my heart littl

It was a distant, sweltering night.Luca and I were on vacation when he suddenly received a phone call. He then told me that he had to attend to urgent business and left in a hurry.Back then, I really thought that he had urgent business. Now, I realized it was most probably just an excuse to go back and keep Delila company.I remained by the beach by myself, thinking of clearing my head. Unexpectedly, I saw a man behind the rocks, covered from head to toe in wounds and bruises. He was very weak then, but he still exuded a cold, unapproachable aura.I didn't think much of it and brought him back to my room.Over the next few days, I quietly cleaned his wounds for him, changed his bandages, and made sure that his daily needs were all taken care of.He seldom said a word, and the iciness in his eyes never went away. There was no hint of warmth in them at all. Yet, whenever he looked at me, a flicker of tenderness would sometimes appear in his eyes.I thought that this was just a

The person at the wedding who looked exactly like me was indeed me.After that heartbreaking farce at sea, I thought that it would be the end for me. Instead, it unexpectedly changed the trajectory of my life.Papa must have secretly sent people to look out for me after my last phone conversation with him. Shortly after I began to sink, a bodyguard pulled me up and saved my life.I didn't go back to the yacht nor ask to see Luca again. Instead, I told the bodyguard, who introduced himself as Raimondo Galante, to bring me straight back to Chitchily.Luca could go ahead and think that I'd drowned in that icy water. I wanted him to live in remorse and guilt for the rest of his life. When I got back home, I broke down and cried for a very long time. Papa watched me cry and pulled me into his arms in a warm, comforting hug."Pull yourself together. It's not too late yet, and you're still going to live to see the sun tomorrow. I'm going to send some people his way to teach him a good l

Luca didn't even bother looking up. He just spoke in a cold, weary tone."Don't bother me with anything unless it's about Katerina!"Pino replied, "But Signore, this is a very serious and urgent matter!"He wiped the sweat beading on his forehead and said, "Our cargo ships carrying the Birkin bags were charged an exorbitant amount in toll fees when passing through the port! The fees were so outrageously high that the cost now far exceeds the profit. The entire shipment is a loss!"Luca finally looked up. His tone was absolutely certain as he said, "Impossible! I signed a free-passage contract with the Cecere Famiglia a long time ago. Their port is permanently open and free of charge for all ships belonging to the D'Angelo Famiglia. They're not supposed to charge a single penny!"After stammering for a long time, Pino gritted his teeth and finally said, "Signore, the port doesn't belong to the Cecere Famiglia anymore. It now belongs to the Valentini Famiglia."Luca's face fell. "W

Just as Delila had hoped, the lifeguards searched the entire sea all day and night, but they couldn't find a single trace of me.Luca stayed on the deck of the yacht. His bloodshot eyes were fixed on the sea.Delila stayed next to him to keep him company while offering feigned, gentle comfort."You need to take good care of yourself, Luca. Katerina will be fine. She's too kind a person for the gods to take her away from you. They won't be so cruel."While speaking, tears began streaming down her face."Even though she only fell in because she wanted to kill me, I still don't blame her for it. I want her to come back safely too."Luca never spared her a single glance, and he didn't respond to anything she said either. He just stared out at sea while constantly calling up the lifeguards to check in with them.Early the next morning, the life raft finally came back to the yacht.Luca nearly fainted and fell into the sea when he saw them coming back empty-handed."Signore D'Angelo
