LOGIN|JAIME'S POV|
The brick wall scraped against Laura's back as I slammed her against it, my hands shook with rage as I paced the alley, running my fingers through my hair."What the hell was that?" The words left me in a growl. "Why are you even here? Were you fucking following me?"
Laura straightened against the wall, smoothing down her designer jacket with composite. "I wanted to see the kids, Jaime! I couldn't wait for another week when-
"Are you out of your mind?" I bellowed, the veins on my neck nearly popping. "Our agreement was that you stay hidden!"
"I'm tired of hiding." Laura's chin lifted with defiance, "I'm tired of watching that woman play mother to my children while I-"
"If you don't follow the rules we agreed on," my voice dropped to a low timbre, "I'll make sure you never see them again. And if you even think about taking them from me legally-"
"You can't stop me! I have rights-"
Before I could stop it, my hand shot out and my fingers wrapped around her throat, pressing her back against the brick with enough force to steal her breath.
"Remember our pact," I hissed, my eyes narrowing into slits. "You don't show yourself in public until I say so. You don't disrupt my family, and you fucking don't exists until I decide you exist."
Laura's hands clawed at my wrist, her mouth parting as she struggled for air. "I... I can't stand... watching that woman... with my children..."
The desperation in her voice only deepened my disgust. I released her with a violent shove, sending her crashing to the ground.
She coughed and gasped, one hand pressed to her throat while the other braced against the dirty pavement.
I felt nothing watching her struggle. No pity or remorse, only the bitter taste of regret for the decision that had led us here.
Two weeks ago, she appeared in my office like a ghost. The security cameras had somehow missed her entry and the night guards were absent from their post.
I found her sitting in my leather chair, looking exactly as beautiful as the day I first saw her.
"I made a mistake," she'd whispered, her fingers trailed my shoulders. "I was young and scared. But I've grown up now, Jaime. I've learned what really matters."
I should've called security. I should've had her escorted out and banned her from the building. Instead, I listened to her pity story as she painted herself as a weak victim.
When she'd reached to cover his hands with her own, I felt something crack inside his chest.
"They must miss me," she'd murmured, tears glistening in her eyes. "Children always know, don't they? They always know their real mother."
I couldn't help it, I faltered.
Now, standing in this filthy alley with my life crumbling around me, I wished I could go back in time and do the right thing.
The two weeks since had been a living hell. Laura's constant calls, her threats, her demands to see the children grew more aggressive by the day.
I told myself I could handle it without Alessa knowing, even stopped her from coming to the office in case Laura decided to appear.
I wanted to protect her. Instead, I'd destroyed everything.
My fists connected with the brick wall, but I barely felt the pain even when blood bloomed across my knuckles.
The pain was nothing compared to the image burned into my head of Alessa's face when I'd chosen to protect Laura instead of standing with her.
"Pathetic," Laura's voice cut through my thoughts like a blade. She pulled herself upright, bushing dirt from her jeans. "I'm not afraid of you, Jaime."
She smiled cruelly. "You need to do it now. Tonight. Before she has time to think or realize what she's really up against."
My fingers curled into tight fists. "No. You broke our agreement first. The deal is off."
Laura laughed, cackling like the mad villain she truly was. "Who cares about some stupid pact?" Her voice dropped to a dead whisper. "You were doomed from the moment you let me back in. We both know it."
I turned to her, fighting the urge to snap her neck. But she didn't flinch.
"Act fast, darling. If you don't want to lose your precious wife forever."
The threat was brutal, but she was right. This was only the beginning, and Alessa would never forgive what she'd witnessed today.
And Laura was just getting started.
How had I ever believed she was capable of motherhood?
She would always remain that selfish person I knew she was, but this time something was different.
Someone with power was backing her. Someone with access to information that should've been buried. The way she slipped past my security, and her constant threats, none of it was possible without significant support.
I could start investigating who it was, but time was no longer on my side.
I was trapped between protecting my wife and keeping my children safe, and Laura held all the cards.
"What do you want?" The words tasted like ash in my mouth.
Her smile widened, and she stepped closer. "I want you to break her. Use your words, Jaime. You know exactly which ones will cut the deepest."
She chuckled lowly, her eyes gleaming with something wicked. "I want to watch the mighty heiress crumble."
The cruelty in her voice made my stomach church. This was how she'd always been, vicious and calculating.
And now she wanted me to destroy the only good thing I'd ever done, the only woman who'd ever loved me completely.
But what choice did I have? If I refuse, she would take the children away. If I complied, I would lose Alessa forever.
Either way, my family was doomed.
Alessa’s POV Four years ago, I stood in a boardroom and dismantled my brother's life in front of cameras.Today, I couldn't find my passport because my mother had reorganized my suitcase while I was in the shower."The linen trousers," my mother said firmly, holding them up. "They're breathable. You'll be in Australia in July, Alessa… it's their winter, but you'll still be warm and you need the waistband room."I was rubbing a hand against my six month old bump. "I packed those already.""You packed the navy ones. I'm talking about the cream ones." She said. "I don't need two pairs of linen trousers-""You absolutely need two pairs." She was already folding them into the bag. "And the wrap dresses. All three of them. They'll accommodate the bump beautifully and you won't have to think about it."From the other side of the bed, Josephine, my mother-in-law, looked up from where she was reorganizing my shoes.“Take the sundresses instead," she said. "The wrap dresses are lovely but th
Alessa's POVJaime was standing at the gate with his hands loose at his sides, he looked thinner than I remembered but my heart remained unwavering. Jason stepped forward and squared his shoulders."You need to leave," he said."I know," Jaime said. "I will. I just need a minute."Jason scowled. "You don't get a minute.""Jason." My voice came out quieter than I intended. He looked back at me and his jaw was clenched tight. I touched his arm once, gently.A sigh left his throat and he bobbed his head, conceding. I looked at Jaime. "Say what you came to say."Jaime exhaled. He looked down at the ground for a moment, then at me. "I'm sorry," he said. "I know that doesn't fix anything and I'm not here because I think it fixes anything.”His lips were pressed tightly. "I just needed you to hear it from me. I'm sorry for all of it. The way things ended and the things I didn't say when I should have.""Jaime.” I whispered. “You don’t have to do it.”"You don't have to say anything." He sh
Alessa’s POVI looked at the reports still spread across the table."Alessa." She warned."I'm going," I said, and started stacking papers. She watched me with the expression of someone trying very hard not to smile. "He's been waiting for this for a while, you know."I smiled. "Lisa.""I'm just noting." She said with a shrug. "You're just noting nothing." I closed my laptop. "Go home.""I love how you think that tone still works on me." She was already packing her own bag, betraying that she had been waiting for this moment. "You look nice, by the way. The blue works.""Goodnight, Lisa."She winked. "Have fun.""Goodnight-""Text me.""Lisa."She left, laughing. I sucked in a breath and pulled out my compact mirror, checking my face and fixing my makeup. When I was done, I grabbed my coat and bag, heading downstairs. Jason was outside, leaning against the building with his hands in his pockets and looking at the street. He turned when the door opened, and a bright smile envelope
Alessa's POVThe boardroom smelled the same as it always had and I had sat in this room hundreds of times. I knew every face around this table.Today, some of those faces were not happy with me."What you did," Gerald Fitch said, setting his pen down, "was bypass every established protocol for internal misconduct. There are procedures, Miss James. You ambushed your own brother in front of cameras.""He ambushed me in a burning building," I said pleasantly. "I thought we would try it my way."There was a ripple around the table, and I caught some people trying to hide their smiles. "The reputational damage alone-“ Gerald snapped."Is significantly less than the reputational damage of forty-three million dollars in undisclosed transfers coming out through a regulatory audit," I said. "Which it would have, eventually. These things always do." I looked at him steadily. "I chose the version where we controlled the narrative. That distinction matters to shareholders and it will matter in
Alessa’s POVThey started to whisper, the camera clicked faster but I didn’t move. "JR Corps was built on a principle that was established before I was born and it was for this company would stand for integrity." I kept my gaze moving across the room. "I want to talk to you about what happens when someone inside this company decides that principle is an obstacle."I looked at Jason at the side of the room. He gave the smallest nod.The screens behind me came to life and then a recording of Jason’s voice filled the entire eoom. As he spoke, murmurs filled the room, board members rose to their feet and even my family were shocked. I didn't look at him. I kept my eyes forward, and raised one hand. "There's more."The noise subsided and I nodded. "Exactly one week ago, I was abducted." My eyes found Jason as I kept speaking. “And I was left to die in a burning building. The individual who coordinated my abduction was a woman named Laura. And the individual who contracted her…”I fin
Alessa's POVThe mirror on the wall told me things I wasn't ready to hear. The bruise along my jaw had faded to a sickly yellow-green. My wrists and head still ached with a low persistent throb that the painkillers did nothing to help. I looked at myself for a long time then I straightened my shoulders. I had a press conference to attend. I heard the knock before I could respond, the door opened. "Alessa." He stepped inside, and he actually looked concerned. "You look better. How are you feeling?""Strange," I said. "Everything still feels very far away. The doctors say that's normal."I lied to everyone and told them I lost my memory, pretending not to remember anything that happened three weeks ago. So now, they all saw me as fragile. It was working, I needed them to believe that for my plan to work. He sat on the chair beside my bed, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. "The press conference today," he said, gently. "Are you sure about this? It's too soon."I need t
They settled into their seats, Sara still clinging to my hand like I might disappear if she let go. Michael sat close on my other side, and Jaime gave us space, retreating to the opposite side of the table."Tell me everything," I said, trying to keep my voice light despite the turmoil inside me. "
I was still frozen in Jaime's embrace, his words echoing in my mind. I never knew that the company was in trouble or that Jaime had been bearing all of that by himself. And the children… how long were they in silence, secretly missing me and hoping for my return?I knew I shouldn’t care. This could
Jaime's POVI was sitting in my home office, my eyes glued to the television screen broadcasting the preliminary hearing live. The camera was focused on Alessa as she stood before the judge."Your Honor, I am innocent," she said, her voice resonating with conviction. "I have never used drugs in my
I was standing in the hallway outside the executive offices, watching as security guards escorted Richard out of the building. He walked with his head down, carrying a single cardboard box of personal belongings, the walk of shame every fired employee dreaded.Julien stood beside me, his arms cros
