LOGINI adjusted my hat and pushed my sunglasses higher on my nose, the cardboard sign in my hands already wilting from my sweaty hands. The afternoon sun blazed overhead, and even with the shade over our heads, it was still hot.
"GO MICHEAL! GO EAGLES!" Sara's voice echoed as she bounced on her toes, her own miniature sign decorated with glitter and heart stickers, waving frantically above her head.
The game was brutal, and I winced each time the boys threw their bodies against each other, frantically reaching for the ball.
Micheal moved across the field with intensity, his dark hair slicked with sweat as he passed the ball with precision.
"Your son's got real talent there." The woman beside me leaned over with a bright smile, "you must be so proud."
I bobbed my head with a grin of my own. "We are. He's been practicing every weekend."
"You know, I've been watching these games for the past year now, and you've never missed one." Another mother joined the conversation. "Your husband's a lucky man to have such a devoted wife. And those kids, they're blessed to have you as their mom."
Their praise caused a warmth to bloom in my chest, and I tightened my grip around the cardboard. After last night, communication between me and Jaime had been quite strained but hearing this reminded me of what mattered.
I glanced toward the parking lot, searching for Jaime's familiar BMW among the sea of SUVs and minivans. He promised to make it by halftime, but we were already deep into the final quarter.
"Get him!" Sara shrieked as an opposing player broke free, her small fists pumping the air with bloodthirsty enthusiasm.
The crowd held its collective breath as Micheal's team pressed forward in the final moment. Then before I could blink, the ball sailed through the posts just as the final whistle screamed.
Everyone erupted into cheers. Sara launched herself into my arms, nearly knocking us both backwards.
"Mommy, we won! Did you see Micheal? Did you see him?"
"Come on," I took her hand, as we navigated down the crowded bleacher steps. "Let's go congratulate your brother."
Micheal escaped from his teammates, his uniform stained with grass and direct.
"You were amazing out there!" I pulled him into a fierce hug, not caring about the mud transferring to my white blouse.
I pressed a cold water bottle into his hands, watching him drain half of it in one big gulp.
"Everyone loved the final play!" Sara bounced around us like an excited puppy. "When you dodged that really big guy and then threw the ball and, wow! You were like a superhero!"
Micheal's cheeks flushed pink but his smile widened. "It was just luck-" He paused, and his eyes grew large with shock. "Dad!"
My heart lifted as I turned, my own smile already forming. Finally, he'd made it. Even if he'd missed most of the game, he was here for the victory to-
"Aunt Laura!"
That name hit like a slap to the face. Time seemed to freeze as my gaze followed Sara's pointing finger.
There, walking across the field with casual confidence was the woman I never thought I would see.
Laura Bishop moved with a predatory gaze, a devilish smirk on her ruby red lips. She hasn't changed one bit, exactly as beautiful as the photographs I've seen.
Before I could move, the children ran towards the approaching pair with happiness. Even Micheal actually laughed as he was pulled into an embrace. Sara chattered animatedly, showing off her glitter sign to the woman who'd given her life.
I stood frozen as I watched my family gravitating towards Laura.
"Alessa," Jaime called, but I couldn't look at him. "I can explain."
I didn't want to listen to him. No, I already trusted him once, and he broke it. Now I was piecing together why he took so long to come for the game.
He was usually the most enthusiastic about Micheal's rugby game, today was the first time he missed it and I could see why.
"Micheal! Sara!" The words ripped from my throat before I could stop it. "Come here. Now."
Both of them turned toward me, and took a step in my direction. But Laura's hands tightened on their shoulders, keeping them still.
"Oh, what's the rush?" I detested the sugary tone in her voice. "I just got to hold my babies. It's been far too long."
Hot rage blazed through my veins. I marched forward and pulled both children from Laura's grip, their small bodies stumbling against mine as I positioned myself between them and the woman who'd dared to call them hers.
"What's she doing here?" I turned to Jaime, hoping he would have a reasonable explanation for this, to make it make sense.
But his face had gone ashen, his mouth opened and closed without a sound.
"I'm here for my children, of course," Laura snapped, and took a step closer. "You didn't really think you could keep them from me forever, did you? They're my blood after all."
I scoffed, rolling my eyes. "You lost your place the moment you walked away from them," I made sure my body shielded Micheal and Sara. "You're not needed or wanted here."
The rugby field had gone quiet, parents now stood watching them and the children had shock and confusion written on their faces. Others were already recording but I didn't care anymore.
No one would ever make me give them up. They were my children, and I would fight anyone who tried to take them away from me.
"You have no idea what they've been through. No idea what it took to put them back together after you shattered them."
Laura's laughter was mocking, her shoulders quaking. "That's exactly why I'm here, darling. To make amends and to be the mother I should have been," her lips curled deviously. "And you can't stop me."
"Leave," I growled, narrowing my eyes but she didn't flinch.
My gaze flew to Jaime, silently begging him to stand with me. And for a moment, I thought he would but then he stepped toward Laura.
"Laura, not here. Please. Let's talk privately."
I didn't know how to react, unsure if this was really happening. Did he just side with Laura over me? Chose another woman over his own wife?
"Jaime," his name left my lips before I could help it.
He turned to me with those sapphire eyes that had once promised me everything, but now they held something that looked terrifyingly like pity.
"Just wait, Alessa. I'll sort this out."
Then he was guiding Laura away from the crowd, his hand hovering protectively at the small of her back.
I was left standing only with two confused children and a field full of strangers who seemed to be entertained by my humiliation.
Alessa’s POV Four years ago, I stood in a boardroom and dismantled my brother's life in front of cameras.Today, I couldn't find my passport because my mother had reorganized my suitcase while I was in the shower."The linen trousers," my mother said firmly, holding them up. "They're breathable. You'll be in Australia in July, Alessa… it's their winter, but you'll still be warm and you need the waistband room."I was rubbing a hand against my six month old bump. "I packed those already.""You packed the navy ones. I'm talking about the cream ones." She said. "I don't need two pairs of linen trousers-""You absolutely need two pairs." She was already folding them into the bag. "And the wrap dresses. All three of them. They'll accommodate the bump beautifully and you won't have to think about it."From the other side of the bed, Josephine, my mother-in-law, looked up from where she was reorganizing my shoes.“Take the sundresses instead," she said. "The wrap dresses are lovely but th
Alessa's POVJaime was standing at the gate with his hands loose at his sides, he looked thinner than I remembered but my heart remained unwavering. Jason stepped forward and squared his shoulders."You need to leave," he said."I know," Jaime said. "I will. I just need a minute."Jason scowled. "You don't get a minute.""Jason." My voice came out quieter than I intended. He looked back at me and his jaw was clenched tight. I touched his arm once, gently.A sigh left his throat and he bobbed his head, conceding. I looked at Jaime. "Say what you came to say."Jaime exhaled. He looked down at the ground for a moment, then at me. "I'm sorry," he said. "I know that doesn't fix anything and I'm not here because I think it fixes anything.”His lips were pressed tightly. "I just needed you to hear it from me. I'm sorry for all of it. The way things ended and the things I didn't say when I should have.""Jaime.” I whispered. “You don’t have to do it.”"You don't have to say anything." He sh
Alessa’s POVI looked at the reports still spread across the table."Alessa." She warned."I'm going," I said, and started stacking papers. She watched me with the expression of someone trying very hard not to smile. "He's been waiting for this for a while, you know."I smiled. "Lisa.""I'm just noting." She said with a shrug. "You're just noting nothing." I closed my laptop. "Go home.""I love how you think that tone still works on me." She was already packing her own bag, betraying that she had been waiting for this moment. "You look nice, by the way. The blue works.""Goodnight, Lisa."She winked. "Have fun.""Goodnight-""Text me.""Lisa."She left, laughing. I sucked in a breath and pulled out my compact mirror, checking my face and fixing my makeup. When I was done, I grabbed my coat and bag, heading downstairs. Jason was outside, leaning against the building with his hands in his pockets and looking at the street. He turned when the door opened, and a bright smile envelope
Alessa's POVThe boardroom smelled the same as it always had and I had sat in this room hundreds of times. I knew every face around this table.Today, some of those faces were not happy with me."What you did," Gerald Fitch said, setting his pen down, "was bypass every established protocol for internal misconduct. There are procedures, Miss James. You ambushed your own brother in front of cameras.""He ambushed me in a burning building," I said pleasantly. "I thought we would try it my way."There was a ripple around the table, and I caught some people trying to hide their smiles. "The reputational damage alone-“ Gerald snapped."Is significantly less than the reputational damage of forty-three million dollars in undisclosed transfers coming out through a regulatory audit," I said. "Which it would have, eventually. These things always do." I looked at him steadily. "I chose the version where we controlled the narrative. That distinction matters to shareholders and it will matter in
Alessa’s POVThey started to whisper, the camera clicked faster but I didn’t move. "JR Corps was built on a principle that was established before I was born and it was for this company would stand for integrity." I kept my gaze moving across the room. "I want to talk to you about what happens when someone inside this company decides that principle is an obstacle."I looked at Jason at the side of the room. He gave the smallest nod.The screens behind me came to life and then a recording of Jason’s voice filled the entire eoom. As he spoke, murmurs filled the room, board members rose to their feet and even my family were shocked. I didn't look at him. I kept my eyes forward, and raised one hand. "There's more."The noise subsided and I nodded. "Exactly one week ago, I was abducted." My eyes found Jason as I kept speaking. “And I was left to die in a burning building. The individual who coordinated my abduction was a woman named Laura. And the individual who contracted her…”I fin
Alessa's POVThe mirror on the wall told me things I wasn't ready to hear. The bruise along my jaw had faded to a sickly yellow-green. My wrists and head still ached with a low persistent throb that the painkillers did nothing to help. I looked at myself for a long time then I straightened my shoulders. I had a press conference to attend. I heard the knock before I could respond, the door opened. "Alessa." He stepped inside, and he actually looked concerned. "You look better. How are you feeling?""Strange," I said. "Everything still feels very far away. The doctors say that's normal."I lied to everyone and told them I lost my memory, pretending not to remember anything that happened three weeks ago. So now, they all saw me as fragile. It was working, I needed them to believe that for my plan to work. He sat on the chair beside my bed, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. "The press conference today," he said, gently. "Are you sure about this? It's too soon."I need t

ALESSA’S POVThe next morning at work, I was slumped over my desk, staring blankly at my computer screen without really seeing it."Okay, what's wrong?" Lisa's voice cut through my fog. She was standing in my doorway, arms crossed, studying me with concerned eyes. "You look like someone killed you
I stood on the doorstep of what used to be my home, my finger hovering over the doorbell. My heart hammered against my ribs, and for a moment, I considered turning around and leaving. But I promised myself I needed to do this for closure, if nothing else. I pressed the button and heard the chime
I walked without direction, my mind couldn’t forget Jason's words. The sky had been threatening rain all day, and now it finally delivered with fat droplets that quickly became a downpour.I didn't seek shelter. I just kept walking.“I'm in love with you, Alessa.”Jason's confession echoed in my he
