Excited, Isla ran into the mansion. The living room was empty, not a single plate on the dining table. She ignored it and hurried upstairs, but the smile on her face faded the second she saw the empty space in their bedroom.

Gareth wasn’t here either.

Sighing, she dragged herself to her closet to change out of her clothes. Gareth’s closet beside hers was open, it hadn’t been touched for days, yet when she checked, half of his clothes were gone.

Her fingers curled into a fist.

    Later that afternoon, Gareth invited Isla out for lunch. As Isla stepped out of her company building, she sighted Gareth’s shiny black Lexus waiting in the parking lot. Before, he would have been standing outside, and leaning against the body of his car while waiting for her with the warm smile he always wore, but now he simply sat inside the car.These past days he's been trying to act like everyone was fine but he was simply bad at it.Isla sucked in a deep breath, using the fingers on her right hand to hide her ring finger. She entered the car and sat down.“Hey,” Gareth glanced at her very quickly and greeted softly.“Hi,” she forced a smile, also nodding at him briefly while fixing her seatbelt. After she had settled down, Gareth passed her an iPad with a free hand while he drove with his other hand out of the Khan’s Empire building to the road.“Pick the restaurant you'd like to eat at,” he said casually, keeping his eyes straight ahead.Isla only glanced at the menu sharply be

    Khan’s Empire“With several big names like Peter Smith, Reginald Johnson, the Williams family, and so on, I believe the Rajans’ wedding will be the right place to launch our new line.”Mr. Han’s voice faded over time, and the only image Isla could see was herself from earlier, scattering her bedroom in search of her missing wedding ring, still unable to find it.“What do you think, Mrs. Khan?” Mr. Han asked, but there was no reply.“Mrs. Khan?”Isla was snapped back into the boardroom, immediately meeting the concerned yet slightly annoyed faces of the heavily suited individuals seated on each side of the long oak table.“I’m sorry, can you come again?” She was never one to apologize for any reason in the boardroom, but this was more than the fifth time she had drifted off and asked them to start over.“I was talking about using the Rajans’ wedding to introduce our new diamonds to the world. We can subtly incorporate the diamonds into our outfits and accessories. I believe we’ll catch

    “Do you think we’re going to be welcomed back for the wedding?” Priya asked softly as she walked hand in hand with Dev down the street.“Definitely not,” he chuckled.People who walked past them cast strange stares, and Priya tried to hide her face every time.“They’re acting like they’ve never seen a married couple walking on the street before,” Dev coughed out with a quiet huff.“I know, but we’re so obvious,” Priya pouted. She hid her face again when another person passed by.Suddenly, she was swept off her feet into Dev’s arms, carried in a princess hold. Her eyes widened like an overinflated balloon.“Put me down,” she whispered harshly.“No. I want to make it even more obvious that you’re my wife,” he smirked.“But we’re not married yet,” she reminded him.“Oh…” He cleared his throat, and Priya’s eyes crinkled as she stared up at him, wondering what he was about to do.Then he began screaming; loudly.“Hey everyone! We’re getting married today! I’m taking her to the venue now, a

    Gasps and whispers suddenly filled the room. People looked toward the mundap in shock, especially Mrs. Menon and Dev’s family.“I don’t understand, where is your daughter?” Anaya asked Mrs. Menon, but as she stared at the unfamiliar woman ahead, Mrs. Menon remained speechless.“Where is she?” Dev quietly asked the fake bride before him, his voice toned, even though he looked anything but calm right now.The woman was trembling. She didn’t know what to say or how to look him in the eyes. He was terrifying. Thinking about it, she suddenly couldn’t understand why she had agreed to this madness in the first place.“I said, where is she!” Dev’s voice hardened, making the woman flinch.“I… I don’t know… I swear I don’t know where she is,” she cried, pleading at the same time.Dev pulled his gaze away from her and scanned the guests. Suddenly, Isla was nowhere to be seen. He muttered a curse under his breath before stepping out of the mundap and storming out.The guests remained in awe of wh

    India, next day.The day had brightened. The morning sun streamed across the room, casting golden light on Priya’s sleeping face. She squinted, turning away as if trying to escape the brightness."Rise and shine, soon-to-be bride. It’s your special day today," Isla said dramatically as she stepped into the room with a small bowl of water. "Wake up, Priya, it’s your wedding day." She sprinkled water across her face.Priya rolled over, grunting."Come on, can’t you just leave me for at least two hours?" She frowned but Isla couldn't care less."Baby, you know that’s not possible," Isla smirked.Priya sighed and opened her eyes. She saw Isla standing there, arms crossed, waiting for her."Everyone is here, the makeup artists, stylists, hairdressers. They’re ready to transform you into a goddess," Isla said as she helped Priya out of bed."Start with smiling, okay? Smile." She playfully guided Priya’s face with her hand.Priya forced a smile."That’s okay, I’ll take it. Go wash your face;

    Isla quitely stared at Priya wondering what she meant by her statement but Priya smiled and brushed it off."I'm not saying I don't want to get married, I was just wondering what would happen if I didn't" she muttered as she faced the mirror to continue staring at her reflection."Priya, marriage is not something easy especially an arranged one. You only do it when it benefits you and you have the heart for it. When I first got married,I didn't know what to do but I know needed the opportunity, I know I'd lose a lot if I didn't do get married to Gareth. I'm happy about my decision and you should be too, so think about it okay?" Isla advised her softly.Priya didn't physically respond but she heard everything Isla said.The following day, Priya’s family’s modern haveli was already crowded with some guests, family members and old friends, but only women dressed in a luxurious designed saree.“Don’t shake your hand, I’m almost done,” Isla said with full focus as she drew patterned henna
