The morning of the interview she woke at five and lay in the dark for twenty minutes before accepting that she was not going to sleep again.

She got up. Made coffee. Stood at the east window in the early quiet and watched the city in the way she had started doing on mornings that required extra steadying. The light was still thin, the city not yet fully itself, and she stood with her cup and let the view do what it always did reduce everything to a manageable scale.

The interview was at ten. M

James called on a Saturday morning. She was at the window with her coffee. Eric was still asleep — he had slept in, which he allowed himself on Saturdays now more than before, the specifically allowing quality of a man who had stopped fighting the parts of himself that needed rest."Are you free this afternoon," James said."Yes," she said."Just you.""Yes," she said. They met at the café near his hotel. He was there when she arrived, sitting at the corner table with his hands around a cup, and he looked up when she came in and something in his expression was different from any expression she had seen on him in three months. She sat down."Tell me," she said.He looked at his cup. Then at her."I am leaving next week," he said. "The project is wrapping up. I have an offer in Edinburgh — a restoration commission, the kind I have been waiting for. I am going to take it."She absorbed this. "Edinburgh.""Yes." He turned his cup. "It is the right move. The work is exactly what I want to

Two weeks later James came to the penthouse and something happened that she had not anticipated. He had come ostensibly to show her the completed drawings — the project was nearly done, the final structural assessment had passed, he was two weeks from wrapping up. She had made tea and they were at the kitchen island looking at the drawings and Eric was in his office with the door open. And then Eric came out.Not for a work reason — she could tell from the way he moved, the absence of the jacket and the briefcase quality. He just came out. Into the kitchen where she and James were.He looked at the drawings.James looked at him."Finished?" Eric said."Nearly," James said. "Two weeks.""The third floor came together.""Yes. The light is going to be very good." James paused. "Do you want to see."Eric came to the island. She stood between them and watched Eric look at James's drawings with the focused attention he brought to things that interested him, and watched James explain the sol

The following Thursday James came to dinner. Not the penthouse — the restaurant on the east side. The three of them. She had reinstated the plan deliberately, because retreating from it would have been the wrong signal, and she had told Eric it was happening and he had said alright in a way that was different from the managed airtight.Different in the direction of actual. She noticed. The dinner was different from previous ones. Not bad — not dramatically off. But the texture was different. Eric was quieter. Not cold, not managed, but quieter in the specific interior way that had been his mode for weeks. He answered when spoken to. He engaged when James engaged him. But the easy forward quality of the earlier dinners was not there.James noticed. She could see him noticing with the careful attention he had always brought to her life. After dinner on the pavement James and Eric stood for a moment and she watched them — the shoulder-grip, the specific quality of two men who had reached

Saturday she cancelled with James. Not because she was hiding from the problem — she had decided not to do that. Because she and Eric needed Saturday to themselves. She texted James: Can we push to next week? I need to stay in this weekend.James: Of course. Everything alright? She: Working on it.James: Call if you need me.She: I know. Thank you.She put her phone down.Eric was in his office with the door closed. She stood in the kitchen and thought about what Mrs. Mary had said — steadiness, time, letting him come to himself. She thought about what Eric had said — something feels wrong and I cannot find it.She went to his office door. Knocked."Come in," he said. She opened the door and sat in the chair across from his desk. He looked at her with the specific wariness of a man who had said something he regretted and was not sure what was coming."I cancelled Saturday," she said.He looked at her."Not because of what you said," she said. "Because I think we need the time." She he

The fight happened on a Friday evening and it was the worst thing he had ever said to her.It did not come from nowhere. She had been watching it build for three weeks. But knowing it was building and being fully prepared for its arrival were different things, and when it arrived she was not fully prepared.James had texted in the afternoon. A change of plan for their Thursday dinner the following week — could they do Saturday instead, he had a site commitment Thursday. She had replied without thinking: Saturday works. The Italian place? And then she had sent the text without running it past Eric, which she had started doing with their plans involving James, and then she had remembered and thought: I will mention it tonight. She mentioned it over dinner."Saturday," he said."James has a site commitment Thursday. He asked if Saturday—""Saturday," he said again. The specific quality of a single word carrying more weight than its syllables. She looked at him. "Is Saturday a problem.""

She went to the park on Tuesday and told Mrs. Mary everything. The second glass of wine on Thursday. The moving away at the kitchen counter. The quality in his face she had never seen before.Mrs. Mary listened without interrupting. When Alison was done she was quiet for a long time. Then she said: "He is frightened.""Yes," Alison said."Not of James. Of losing something he cannot name.""He said those exact words.""Yes." Mrs. Mary threw seeds. The pigeons came. "That is the most frightening kind of fear. The kind without a specific object. When you know you are afraid but you cannot say of what exactly — that is the kind that eats from the inside."Alison looked at the fountain."What do I do," she said.Mrs. Mary looked at her. "What do you think you should do.""I want to pull James back," Alison said. "Less dinners. Less presence. Give Eric room to breathe.""And James.""He would understand.""Perhaps." Mrs. Mary looked at the fountain. "And do you think that would solve the un
