Chapter 6

Author: Grace
Julian came through the doorway like a storm and shoved Sienna off me.

Sienna hit the floor hard and stayed there, clutching her arm, staring up at him.

"Julian—what are you—"

He wasn't listening. He was bent over me, checking my throat.

"Are you hurt? Tell me you're not hurt."

I looked at the panic in his eyes and felt something close to contempt.

"Don't touch me." I pushed his hand away. My voice was shredded.

His body locked up. His eyes went dead.

He turned to the floor where Sienna was.

"Who told you to come here?"

Sienna pulled herself up. "I just wanted to speak with her—"

"About what? About how to strangle her?" His voice cracked the air. "I warned you. Do not touch her."

Sienna stared at him, her eyes reddening.

"You're yelling at me—for this wreck? Have you forgotten what you promised my father?"

Julian sucked in a breath. His rage went cold.

"I haven't. But if you lay so much as another finger on Clara, your family gets nothing. I mean nothing."

Sienna ground her teeth. Her eyes on me were pure poison.

"Fine. Remember what you just said."

She stalked out.

The room went still again.

He approached the bed. He tried to take my hand. I moved it.

"Mr. Blackwood." My voice was ice. "Is the show over?"

"Has your first love woken up yet?"

His whole body jerked. His eyes went wide.

"How—how do you know—"

"You can't bury this kind of thing forever." I smiled, flat and contemptuous.

"You make me sick. To save your first love, you turned me into a prop."

"You mortgaged the company, bought Harrington's patent. And then came crawling back here to perform devotion."

"How many faces do you have, exactly?"

His face was paper-white. His mouth shook.

"Let me explain. It's not what you think."

"What is it, then?" I didn't give him room.

"Five years ago, Emma saved my life. The crash put her in a coma. I owe her."

He closed his eyes.

"I spent years looking for a doctor. I ended up at Professor Harrington. He refused to even see me."

"Then Sienna wanted me. She offered to have her father save Emma—if I agreed to marry her."

"And me?" I cut him off, trembling. "In your head, what am I?"

His eyes opened. They were ferocious and certain.

"I love you. From the start. The only one I've loved is you."

"I said yes to Sienna to buy time. The core assets of my company are already moved. What Harrington has is a paper shell."

"The second Emma opens her eyes, I'm breaking the engagement. I'm taking you away."

I stared at him. The tears I'd been fighting ran over.

"Do you think you're a god?"

"You factored everyone into your plan. You just never asked me."

"Do you know what it did to me when you showed up with lipstick on your collar?"

"Do you know what it did to me when she sat in my room and humiliated me with that stock transfer?"

"You have no idea. You were too busy executing your plan."

I drew one shaky breath and wiped my face.

"We're done, Julian."

Cresthaven Grand Theatre.A spotlight held the center of the stage.I wore a pure white tutu and moved with the music—a point of the toe, a turn, a jump—every movement clean, exact. The house was full. The applause ran like thunder. This was my first professional performance since my comeback. The Clara whom doctors had sentenced to life in a wheelchair—she was back on the stage she belonged to.The music closed.I lifted the hem of my dress and bowed, elegant. The curtain came down slowly.I stood there, breathing hard, sweat at my hairline, and felt something I hadn't felt in years: ease. The stage door opened.Julian came in. A crisp black suit. A bouquet of red roses. His wound had healed. The gauntness and the exhaustion were gone. He looked like the man he had been before any of this."Congratulations, principal dancer. You triumphed."He handed me the roses. Then he pulled me in against his chest.I took the bouquet and breathed in the soft scent, and couldn't keep a smile off m

Machines ticked in the intensive care unit.Julian was a thicket of tubes. His face was gray.I sat at the bedside and held his cold fingers, and didn't dare breathe too hard. I was terrified that any movement would break this fragile, reclaimed dream.Three days. Two critical-condition notices.I signed them. My pen went through the paper."Go rest for a while. You can't hold up like this." Dr. Calloway spoke softly from the doorway.I shook my head. I kept my eyes on the bed."I'm not leaving.""I'm afraid he'll open his eyes, not see me, and spiral."Julian, in the bed, moved. The numbers on the monitor jumped.I shot to my feet and hit the call button. He cracked his eyes open. His cracked lips parted, but no sound came out.I bent my ear to his mouth and heard the rasp."Don't cry..."Tears hit his cheek. I wiped my own face with the heel of my hand and cursed him through clenched teeth."You unbelievable bastard.""Who told you to take a knife for me? Did you actually think that

Instinct saved me. I lurched sideways. The knife opened a line across my arm. Blood flowed."Sienna, you've lost your mind—"She came at me again, knife up."I haven't lost anything. You did this to me. You stole him."A body intercepted hers in the doorway—Julian, barreling between us.The blade drove into his stomach.I saw it go in.I saw him fold."Julian!"I screamed and caught him as he went down.Sienna froze. The knife dropped out of her hand and clattered on the floor."Julian—I didn't mean—I wasn't trying to—" she was babbling. He fought through the pain to lock eyes with her."Get out. Don't let me see you again."Sienna scrambled out on all fours.I pressed both hands to the wound. Blood pumped through my fingers."Stay with me. I'm calling 911."He caught my hand weakly and forced a dying smile."You finally said my name.""Shut up. You are not dying." I was sobbing. Tears dropped onto his face. With difficulty, he lifted a hand and wiped one of my tears."I'm sorry. I got

The surgery ran ten hours. When I woke in recovery, the first thing I saw was Dr. Calloway—exhausted, smiling."It worked. You're going to walk again."I wept with relief. I tried to talk. No sound came out.He patted my hand. "Easy. Rest. We have time."The months that followed were the hardest I'd ever known.Every stretch. Every attempt to stand. It was like dancing on a blade. But I didn't stop.Because I knew: this was my only way back. And through every one of those days, Julian was there. He wasn't forceful anymore. He sat beside me, silent. If I fell, he was the first one there. If I cried from the pain, he was the one gently wiping my face.He moved like a penitent. He was trying, with everything he had, to make something right.I still didn't say yes to him.The thorn in my chest was still there. Then, one day, Dr. Calloway told me that Emma had woken up.I went still for half a second. Then I said, calmly, "Is she all right?"He nodded."She has a long road ahead. But she'll

Julian went to pieces. He dropped onto one knee in front of my chair, held my hand in both of his, eyes rimmed red."I was wrong. I shouldn't have kept it from you. I shouldn't have decided without you.""Hit me. Curse me. Just—please—don't say we're over."I pulled my hand free, cold."Too late.""The moment you chose to lie to me, we were never going to come back from it.""Go. Save Emma. Go to Sienna. Don't come back here."I turned my chair and faced the other way. I didn't look at him.Behind me, I heard something catch in his throat—a choked-back sound. After a long time, he got slowly to his feet."I'm not giving up. I'll prove it to you. I really do love you."He walked out.For the days that followed, he didn't come. But he sent more security. Even Dr. Calloway handled me like a fragile thing. He was watching over everything, from behind a curtain. It didn't matter anymore.Something inside me had died.A month later, Dr. Calloway burst through my door with a report, practical
