Marie's POV

My heart hammered against my ribs as I chased after Mark.

"Mark, wait! Please!" I called, my voice cracking. He didn't stop until we reached the elevator bank just outside the private lounge area. When he finally turned, the hurt in his eyes nearly broke me.

"A friend for lunch?" he spat, his voice low but trembling with barely contained anger. "Really, Marie? I was worried sick after last night. I thought maybe you needed space, but I followed because I care. And I find you in his goddamn penthouse suite at a five-star hotel? What the hell is going on?"

Tears blurred my vision as I grabbed his arm, refusing to let him pull away. "It's not what it looks like, I swear. He texted me last night saying it was important. I didn't want to go, but after everything at the gala…I thought if I just heard him out, it would end. I told him no, Mark. I said no to all of it."

Mark laughed bitterly, running a hand through his hair as the elevator doors dinged open. He stepped inside and I followed, the small space feeling suffocating. "No to what, exactly? Because from where I was standing, it looked like you two were in the middle of something pretty intense. God, Marie, I trusted you."

The elevator descended, and I wiped at my cheeks, the guilt twisting like a knife. I understood how things may have seemed for Mark, and I knew it wasn't making my case any easier. If I wanted to get out of this without widening the already existing rift between us, then it was best to tell him the truth.

"He proposed, Mark." I started and watched as Mark's face immediately contorted with fear and shock. "He offered me five million to do it."

Mark's face went pale, then flushed red with a mix of shock and rage. "Five million? Jesus Christ. So this is what you are to him? A transaction? And you went up there anyway, after promising me last night that he was just history?"

The doors opened to the main lobby, and we stepped out into the bustling hotel entrance. I pulled him toward a quieter alcove near the revolving doors, my hand trembling on his sleeve. "I'm not taking the money. I'm not going back to him. I love you, Mark. You're the one who makes me feel safe, who remembers the little things, who builds a real future with me. Andrea is chaos. He's always been chaos."

He stopped, turning to face me fully. His hands cupped my face gently, thumbs brushing away fresh tears. The respect was still there in his touch, even now, and it made my chest ache harder.

"Then why did you go? Why didn't you tell me about the text? I thought we were past secrets after the gala."

"I was scared," I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper. "Scared that if I ignored it, he'd show up again and ruin what we have. But I swear, I told him no. I told him I have you, that I'm not the girl he can buy anymore."

Mark searched my eyes for what felt like forever. Then, without warning, he pulled me close and kissed me, heated but controlled, his lips firm and familiar. His hands slid to my waist, holding me like I might disappear. I kissed him back, pouring everything into it, trying to remind myself why this was right.

But as his thumb traced my hip, my mind betrayed me. For a split second, I remembered Andrea's serious face across that table, saying "I want us to get married for real." The memory sent an unwanted spark through me, my thighs clenching at the ghost of his possessive touch from two years ago. I pulled away slightly, breathing hard, guilt flooding me anew.

Mark noticed. Of course he did. "What is it?" he asked, forehead resting against mine. "You're here with me, but part of you is still up there, aren't you? When he called you wife last night… did some part of you want that? Be honest with me, Marie. I'm fighting for us, but I can't do it if you're torn."

Tears spilled over again. "I chose you," I whispered fiercely. "That's all that matters."

He softened a fraction, pulling me into a hug, his chin resting on my head. "I want to believe you. I love you, Marie. But this guy… he's not going to stop. Five million? That's a lot of money. And the way he looked at you…" Mark's voice cracked. "It felt like he already owned you."

Mark was probably right, with something as big as his entire empire on the line, it was unlikely that Andrea would stop anytime soon. But what could I do? How do I stop him from thinking about me, about this ridiculous offer?

"Please take me home." I finally managed to whisper after taking more than a minute to think without finding answers. Avoiding Andrea would be difficult, he was like an all consuming plague. Should I run away again? Go to a new country and start a new life there? It seemed like my best option at the moment, but what about Mark? What about my job and the friends that I had made here?

Ahhhhhhh!!!! I screamed inside my head. I just couldn't seem to think of a way to escape that man. Should I accept the offer….

No! How dare you even think about that?! I scolded myself. I couldn't betray Mark, not like that. He deserved so much better.

I took a deep breath and gathered my thoughts. I needed to stop thinking about Andrea for now, focusing on myself and my relationship was probably the best thing to do at the moment. And until I was done patching things with Mark, Andrea would never be a thought in my head.

Marie's POVIt was two days since the day Andrea had informed me about us going on a business trip. And in two days time, we would be in New Orleans. I was telling Mark today. For some reason, I felt more nervous than I thought I would. Maybe because I had assumed I would be telling him about it over dinner in his apartment or at a fancy diner. And not in the staff cafeteria during my break time. I had asked him to text me when he got inside the building. “Hey, babe,” a voice says behind me as I walk into the cafeteria. I turn around to see Mark, leaning on the wall and flashing me a big smile. “I asked you to call when you got inside.”“Sorry, forgot,” he said walking closer and wrapping me in a hug. I lowered my face in his neck and inhaled. He smelled so good today. And different. “Did you change your perfume or shampoo?” I asked curiously, leading us to an empty table. “No. Why?”“You smell…different.”He looked at me with an amused expression. “As far as it’s good differ

Marie's POVI didn’t bother about knocking before letting myself into Andrea's office. I was still slightly breathless from the sprint that happened from my car into the building and then to catch the elevator. At least I know I’m on time. "Made it in less than twenty minutes," I announce as I walk in. "I'm giving you a discount on my time."Andrea didn't look up from his desk right away. He had his eyes on his laptop, and his sleeves rolled up to his elbow, with his tie loosened in a way that shouldn't have looked as good as it did."Am I supposed to applaud you for doing your job?" He finally spoke. My lips curled in a frown. "I guess lunch with a beautiful lady didn’t do you any good."His eyes flicked up to meet my gaze without his head moving, the corner of his mouth twitching before he schooled it back into something more professional. Pretending he hadn’t heard my statement, he slid a folder across the desk toward me."Take that home and go through everything tonight. We have

Marie's POV An hour. That's how long Mark was gone for while I finished up the cooking in his kitchen. By the time he walked back in through his front door, I'd dished out the food, eaten and watched his grow cold. "Where the hell did you go?" I asked in annoyance. "Woah, calm down, babe. You don't get to waltz back into my life and give me orders," he smirked, closing the door behind him. I placed a hand on my hips, my mouth dropping in surprise. "Hey, Marie. I didn't mean it like that," he sighed, coming closer to me. "These days you say a lot of things that you claim you don't mean." "I just don't like being shouted at and you know that." His hands snaked around my waist, pulling me closer to himself. "But really, where were you? One minute, you were cleaning up the living room. The next, you'd disappeared and the living room is still a mess." Ignoring my question, he placed a finger under my chin, tilting my chin up and lowering his lips to mine, bu

Marie's POV I dialed Mark as soon as Andrea and Darlene were out. To my annoyance, he didn't pick. It wouldn't have bothered me. But right now, I needed to hear his voice. I needed to hear him tell me Andrea couldn't and wasn't going to come between us. I needed to convince myself that I wasn't jealous that Andrea was now with someone else, and that I was glad that I could now finally be with Mark. After trying his number a third time with no answer, I began gathering my things. Andrea had already said I could close for the day since he wasn't coming back to the office after lunch. Where was he going to take Darlene to after lunch? His house? A hotel?"Stop thinking about them, Marie," I scolded myself. They were somewhere feeding themselves dessert and laughing. Now I needed to go chase my own happiness. And hope to God that I remained happy with him. *** I pulled up in front of Mark's apartment building after being unsuccessful in trying to reach him over the phone. His ca

Marie's POV I had heard my name more times than I ever thought possible in one morning. "Marie, schedule the meeting with Regal Firms for noon.""Marie, tell the head of Finance that we need their budget report before the end of the day.""Marie, go through the budget report for the IT department."At this time, I was sure that Andrea was just sitting in his office playing Candy Crush. He had only been to one meeting that didn't even last for up to thirty minutes. And then, I had to stay back while he returned to the office and write a detailed report of all that was said in the meeting for him. For record purposes, he said. The worst part of it all was that he made us take the stairs everywhere we went today. He said he needed to get some cardio in and the elevator made him lazy. He wouldn't even let me use them because he had a lot of instructions to throw at me while we climbed. My eyes were hurting from looking at my screens all day. And my body ached like I was bashed by a c

Andrea's POV "No," Marie said firmly, rising from her seat.I raised a brow at her. "No, I will not be attending a family dinner with you."I chuckled, sliding my hands into my pockets. "It seems you're not entirely familiar with the duties of a personal assistant.""That's right. I'm your personal assistant, not your fake wife or pretend girlfriend. I made it explicitly clear in the text message I sent you last night. The text you didn't even bother to send a reply to...""Oh, sorry I didn't reply. I was busy with my girlfriend," I cut in calmly. "You had HR throw me off guard this morning and..." her voice lowered a considerable bit as my words registered in her head. "I'm sorry, what did you say?"I resisted the urge to laugh out loud. "What did I say when?""You said you were busy with...your girlfriend?""Does that bother you?" I asked, moving closer to her. I could see that she was visibly shaken and taken aback. Exactly the reaction I had been gunning for when I let the wor
