Chapter 6 Before

Lucas didn’t talk about the life before. Not to Comfort, who'd probably guessed pieces of it just from the way he spoke sometimes, too careful, too polished in certain sentences for a man who spent his days under sinks. Not to Zuri, who was too young to understand it and, he hoped, would stay that way a while longer. Not even really to himself, most days — he'd gotten good at keeping the door of it shut.

But some nights it came anyway, uninvited, the way old things do.

But some nights it came anyway, uninvited, the way old things do.Tonight it was the smell that did it — someone two doors down was frying something with too much thyme in it, and thyme had been Ann's thing, the one spice she put in everything whether it belonged there or not, and Lucas found himself sitting very still on the edge of the mattress with Zuri asleep beside him, letting the memory come instead of fighting it for once. He'd been good at his job. That was the part people would never guess, looking at him now — that three years ago he'd sat in strategy meetings at Harrington

  • The Billionaire Fell For The Widower   Chapter 5 The Woman They Called a Curse

Vivienne was eleven years old the first time she heard her mother called a witch to her face. Not directly to her face — her aunt Patience hadn't known she was standing in the corridor outside the dining room, small and quiet in her school uniform, waiting to be called in for dinner. Patience's voice had carried the way voices do when people believe children are elsewhere."That woman bewitched him," Patience was saying, to someone Vivienne couldn't see — probably Marcus, judging by the low murmur that answered. "A man like Richard Kingston, with everything, and he goes and marries a girl from Eket with nothing to her name. No family behind her. No name that means anything in this city. You tell me that's not spiritual.""Ma, leave it," Marcus had said, though not with much conviction."I won't leave it. Our brother had his pick of any daughter from any good family in this state, and he chose a nobody who trapped him with... whatever she used. I have my suspicions."Vivienne hadn't un

The call came on a Wednesday, and Lucas almost didn't pick up because he didn't recognize the number."Is this Lucas Okon?" A crisp voice, all business. "I'm calling on behalf of Ms. Kingston. We have an event Friday evening — one of the bathrooms in the east wing has a fault, and given the number of guests expected, she'd prefer it handled by someone she's already had in the house. Can you come Friday afternoon, ahead of the event?"Lucas sat down slowly on the edge of the mattress. Zuri was at the table, tongue between her teeth, coloring a giraffe purple for reasons known only to her."Friday afternoon," he repeated, doing the math already. Friday afternoon meant no one to watch Zuri — his neighbor Comfort, who sometimes helped, worked Fridays now. "What time would I be done?""She's asked that you stay through the evening, in case anything else comes up during the event. You'll be paid for the full day. Generously." A pause, like the woman on the phone was reading something off a

  • The Billionaire Fell For The Widower   Chapter 3 The Crown Nobody Wanted To See Her Wear

Vivienne Kingston had learned, in the six months since her father died, that grief and boardrooms did not mix well. Grief wanted you to sit still. Boardrooms wanted you sharp, dressed, unshaken, by nine. She gave them unshaken. It was the only thing she had left to give. Her father's office was still her father's office, technically, though her name was on the door now, freshly etched, the paint around it not yet faded to match the rest. She hadn't been able to bring herself to move the chair, the pen set, the small framed photo of the two of them at her graduation, him beaming like she'd hung the moon instead of just finished a business degree he'd already taught her twice over at the dinner table.Richard Kingston had built Kingston Holdings from a single shipping contract into something that touched half a dozen industries. He'd also, apparently, believed he had another twenty years to teach his daughter how to hold it. The heart attack took that assumption away from both of them i

  • The Billionaire Fell For The Widower   Chapter 2 What The Landlord Wants

Lucas got home a little after six, and the first thing he heard through the door was Zuri's laughter, high and unguarded, the kind that only came out when she felt completely safe."Uncle Lucas!" That was Blessing, Comfort's youngest, singing the greeting even though he wasn't anybody's uncle by blood. Zuri's face lit up when she saw him in the doorway, but she didn't run to him yet — she was in the middle of "helping" Comfort's older daughter braid a doll's hair, and abandoning a task halfway was not something Zuri believed in."Evening, evening," Comfort said from her spot on a low stool outside her own door, shelling beans into a bowl balanced on her knees. Her three children and Zuri were sprawled around her on a mat, the day's homework forgotten in favor of the doll. "She ate small rice with the children. I hope that's fine.""You didn't have to feed her too, Comfort.""Ehn, one more mouth in this house, nobody will notice." She waved a hand like the matter was already closed, th

  • The Billionaire Fell For The Widower   Chapter 1 The Man Who Wouldn't Smile

Lucas Okon had learned to smile with his mouth and nothing else.It was a skill, actually. Nobody taught it to him. Grief taught it to him, the way grief teaches you things you never asked to know. He had practiced it in the bathroom mirror the first week after Ann died, back when he still had a corporate job and colleagues who wanted him to be okay. Stretch the lips. Crinkle the eyes a little, not too much. Nod like you're listening. It worked on people who weren't looking closely.Rich people never looked closely. That was the first thing he learned about this new life of his.He knelt under the kitchen sink of a house that cost more than he would earn in ten years, wrench in hand, sweat gathering at his collar even though the air conditioning was cold enough to see your breath. The pipe joint was corroded, nothing complicated. He could fix it in his sleep. He'd been fixing pipes for four months now, ever since he walked out of Harrington & Partners with a box of his things and a th
