Later that night, Suzan was in her room, folding her clothes for the company tour. Her heart was still heavy from what Paul had told her.

A soft knock.

It was Joseph. He stood at the door, his head down, holding his cap in his hands like a small boy caught stealing sugar.

"Madam Suzan... can I talk to you?" he whispered.

Suzan looked up, tired. "Joseph, what is it? Is it about Fred?"

Joseph walked in slowly and knelt down. His voice was shaking.

"Madam... I'm the one who put those

Suzan woke up warm. Too warm. For a second she didn't know where she was. The tent was small, the air smelled like wet grass and rain, and the sound of water dripping from the mango leaves above was still going _drip... drip... drip._ Then she felt it. A heavy blanket over her shoulders, tucked tight around her legs, almost like someone had wrapped her like a baby. The blanket. The same blanket Darren had stolen last night. She sat up fast, her ponytail messy, her eyes wide. "Darren?" He was not beside her. He was on the other side of the tiny tent, leaning against the tent pole, sleeping sitting up. His black shirt was still damp from last night's rain, stuck to his shoulders. His arms were crossed tight over his chest, trying to keep warm. His face, that always looked arrogant and cold, was pale now. His lips had lost color. He was shivering in his sleep, small shivers. Suzan's heart did something strange. _Thump._ Wait. He gave it to her? Last night she ha

The bus wasn't moving. Six village men came and pushed. "Push! Push!" The bus tyre only sank deeper into the mud with a sad splash. Mr. Bruce, the Government officer, wiped his sweat. "Everyone listen! The bus was stuck until morning. We have tents and biscuits in the back storage. We have to camp here tonight. Tomorrow the tractor will come." Twenty CEOs looked at each other. CEOs who sleep in 5-star hotels, now told to sleep in mud. He opened the back. Ten small tents. Only ten. For twenty people. "Pair up! One man, one woman per tent for safety!" Mr. Bruce said. Everyone paired fast. Friends grabbed friends. Left — Suzan. And Darren. Suzan said "No." Darren said "No." Mr. Bruce pointed. "You two. Last tent. Take it." Suzan dragged her suitcase to a mango tree, far from others. Darren carried the folded tent without a word. The sky was turning grey. Heavy clouds. "I don't share tents with you," Suzan said, trying to open the instructions. "You think I w

The sunshine was too bright for a goodbye. It was 9:12 in the morning and the sun was already sitting high over the iron sheets, making the dust shine like glitter. Suzan stood at her small green gate with one big black suitcase by her feet. She was not wearing a CEO suit. She was wearing a simple white t-shirt, blue jeans, and white sneakers, her hair tied in a low ponytail. Casual. Inside that suitcase though — neatly folded blazers, heels, contracts, perfumes, everything she needed for one week. One whole week. The longest she had ever been away from them. "Mommy?" She turned. Maria and Fred stood at the door. Maria was holding Fred's hand tight like a bodyguard but inside she felt like biting him. Suzan dropped to her knees, not caring about her jeans getting dusty. "You two be good, okay?" she said, pulling them into a hug that smelled like baby oil and biscuits. Paul and Eva, their grandparents , came out behind them. "Don't worry, Suzan. We got them. Go get t

It wasn't Fred who stole them." Suzan froze. The dress she was folding fell to the floor. "What?" she whispered. "What did you say, Joseph?" Joseph didn't look up. He kept his head down. "I'm sorry, Madam. It was me. Fred is innocent. Fred did not steal anything." Suzan's mouth opened. She was very shocked to hear that. Her hands started shaking. She asked him, "Why did you do it, Joseph? Why would you put my earrings under my own son's pillow? Do you

Suzan wiped her tears and walked back to her parents in the compound that same evening. The sun was low. Paul was still under the mango tree, alone. The old photo of him, Eva, and Samuel was still on his lap. He looked up when he heard her footsteps. His eyes were tired, but softer now. Suzan knelt beside him again. This time she didn't ask about secrets. She just laid her head on his knees like she did when she was a small girl. "Dad," she whispered, her voice breaking. "Everything is fixed now. There is no need for keeping secrets from each other. The man... the masked man... he sent me a message. He said it was an accident. He said you are innocent, Dad. After 28 years, someone finally said you are innocent." Paul's hands shook. He touched her hair gently. "My Suzan," he said, his voice thick with tears. "You have carried my shame since you were a child. You were the one who

Maria was quiet too. She was sitting in the corner of the living room, not eating, not playing. She knew Nanny Sara was watching her.Suzan left both of them with Sara and walked to her parents' compound. Her father Paul was sitting alone under the mango tree, on his old plastic chair. He was not reading his newspaper today. He was just staring at the old photo - him, Eva, and Samuel. He looked 10 years older overnight.Suzan knelt beside him. She took his cold, shaking hands in hers."Dad," she whispered. "I am going to fix everything, don't worry. No more secrets. No more running."Paul looked at her with red eyes. "Suzan, my daughter, you don't understand. This secret... It has eaten me for 28 years.""Then we will end it today," Suzan said. "Make sure you tell Jonah the truth. All of it. Jonah is my young brother, he needs to know why you ran from the village. He is now 26, he is a man, he deserves to know about our family."Her father was quiet for a long time. Then he said a sent
