Chase’s POV

When Hace told me that Carmen had returned to the basement to ask some questions, and I had seen her in front of my door, I thought she was here to ask about the rent and grocery payment.

Especially as Hace didn’t get to tell me how he handled it before she showed up.

What I didn’t expect was the question that came out of her mouth.

“Why would you ask me that?” I asked her.

“I was at the basement some hours ago,” Carmen started.

“Why?” I asked, almost too quickly.

Almost too defensively.

“That is not the bone of contention right now, Chase,” Carmen said.

She was using that stern tone on me again, but this time around, I felt like a child being interrogated by his freaking teacher.

Now it dawned on me why Carmen had been staring at me in a weird way since she got here. Not for once did I think that it would have anything to do with my eyes.
