Carmen’s POV
Chase was already training at his private pitch, but I was too ashamed to go there.
I had expected Jonathan to fire me, but he hadn’t.
“Left to me, you would have gotten fired even before you woke up this morning, but that is not in my hands. You already know that Chase Maddox doesn’t tolerate bullshit, and you have made him lose a large amount of money on nothing,” Jonathan had said. “Well, you should go to his pitch,” he had added.
It was as though he had a lot to say to me but changed his mind, and I had left his office.
Now, from the net, I watched Chase practice, and I had never felt this level of shame and regret all at once. I didn’t know what to do or what to say. Judging by the way Jonathan spoke, it was obvious that I would get fired.
Twenty thousand dollars.
It sounded too much to be real. Even though I knew that Chase had more than enough of it, it still would hurt that it used it to protect himself against my foolishness. What kind of manager was I?
I was still thinking about the whole thing and feeling sorry for myself when I noticed that Chase seemed to be limping.
“Why is he limping?” I asked myself.
He still hadn’t seen me because his back was turned to me, but I could see that his gait wasn’t as firm as I had noticed it to be. Something seemed off with the movements of his legs, and I wondered what could be wrong. The manager in me came to life instantly, and I walked into the pitch towards Chase.
“What’s wrong with your leg movement?” I asked him.
Chase wasn’t startled. He simply turned, and when he saw that it was me, he continued with what he was doing.
“What is wrong with it?” He asked stiffly.
“You are limping,” I told him, following him.
This wasn’t the first time being present in his private and personal training, so I already knew that I would have to keep up with him. It wasn’t as though he was doing a marathon race, so it wasn’t impossible to keep up with his energy.
“I am fine,” he stated firmly.
Granted, Chase had never been the kind of player who acted nicely or spoke nicely, but he was extremely cold today, just like he had been in the beginning, and it broke my heart. I realized that it must have been the grave mistake I made and the money he had had to spend, but I was so ashamed that I didn’t even know broach the topic.
“No, you are not, Chase,” I insisted.
The more I watched him, the more I realized that I wasn’t imagining things. Now that I had mentioned it, I also noticed that he was trying so hard to keep himself from limping, but it wasn’t working, and the effort he was putting in seemed to cause him so much pain, as his face contorted in pain.
I felt it inside of me immediately.
“Chase, stop,” I said, but he didn’t.
Instead, he pushed harder.
“Can you stop?!” I yelled out. “You are limping and it is not good for your health!” I barked at him.
He was being cold and stubborn and it was exhausting. Besides, Chase Maddox was like a belligerent child; he wouldn’t pay you any mind until he was yelled at or spoken to with authority, or challenged, and that was exactly how I had been able to succeed where the previous hired managers failed.
Chase stopped, but when he turned to look at me, the fire in his eyes burned so hot that I felt it in my skin.
“You don’t know what is good or bad for me,” he said coldly.
“But you are limping,” I stated, my voice low, now that I had managed to get his attention. “I think we should check you out first,” I added with concern.
“And I have said that I am perfectly okay,” Chase said.
But I knew that he was lying.
“For heaven’s sake, Chase, I have watched you train both privately and with the others, and I haven’t seen you limping before. Even the expression on your face shows that you are in pains,” I insisted, urging him with the sound of my voice. “Please, let me call the medical personnel to have a look at your legs,” I pleaded.
Chase’s coldness seemed to be increasing instead.
“You don’t know anything about me,” he said. “And you need to leave the pitch; you are distracting me, and you will hurt yourself,” he said.
“I am not going anywhere until you have agreed to get checked,” I stated. “I could check it myself if you don’t want anyone in the medical team to know about it,” I added pleadingly.
“About what?” Chase asked me.
“Your legs,” I stated, unwilling to back down. “It might be nothing, or a simply sprain, but please, let me take a look at it,” I begged him.
“You or anyone else doesn’t have any right to tell me what to do or how I feel, Carmen,” Chase said tightly. “So, stop it,” he warned.
He turned to continue with training, but instinctively, I reached out and held his strong and muscled arm, trying to stop him.
It was the first time I was consciously holding his arm, and my fingers didn’t even wrap around his arm successfully because of how big and solid his muscles were, which wasn’t a surprise because he was always training and working out, but then again, I felt the same electric jolt that I had felt when we had the kiss at his apartment.
“I am sorry about last night, Chase,” I went on to apologize. “It wasn’t intentional, and I promise, there is an explanation to it,” I added.
Maybe if I apologized, he would stop being so cold, but when I managed to look up at Chase, the rage and hostility in his eyes were too intense to contend with.
And I quickly took my hand off his.
“Don’t you ever, ever do this again, Carmen,” Chase warned dangerously, referring to me touching him.
I took two steps back in shock.
Carmen’s POVI hurried out of my apartment as soon as Chase left with my heart thumping heavily.“Thank God he has eventually left,” Millie had said.I took off her ugly cloak and hurried into the taxi that I had gotten. I was already thirty minutes late, and the fear of getting my head chopped off my Lori bothered me.By the time I was halfway to the house, I had already missed Lori’s calls six times.“Shit,” I muttered in exasperation.I had the whole day planned out already, and this was definitely not part of the plan. Aside from the fact that Lori hated lateness, I already figured that arriving early would give me enough room to leave early, but now, I would have to deal with trying to apologize to Lori and my dad.“This is not good,” I muttered to myself. What in heaven’s name was Chase doing at my apartment? If he really wanted the leg massage, wouldn’t he have come with his balm or ointment? Thinking about it right now, it dawned on me that Chase’s presence was of no significa
Chase’s POV“Is there a problem?” I asked Carmen. She looked like she had seen a ghost when I made my demand. In all honesty, I knew that I shouldn’t be here, but I was so restless that I didn’t know where else I could have gone. One minute I was driving my car out of my garage, and the next minute, I was at Carmen’s front door.I had simply told myself that being here for the leg massage was a good excuse. Meanwhile, I wasn’t feeling any pain. Carmen’s magic hands had helped in making me feel better. Maybe a part of me just needed to see Carmen to make this nervousness go away.Thankfully, I was able to convince Kevin to accept Donny’s offer. It wasn’t without coming up with a plan, and of course, some high cost, but I was willing to do anything just go get me an insider on Donny’s team so that I would be aware of every move he made.If I wanted to be two steps ahead, I would really have to do what I needed to do.However, I hadn’t felt better. The entire night had been restless for
Carmen’s POV“Carmen, breathe…” Millie urged, gesturing with her hands slowly. She didn’t just say what I thought I heard, right?“What did you just say?” I asked, hoping to God that my ears had heard wrongly, but the expression on Millie’s face already gave me the answer I needed way before she spoke.“Chase Maddox is in the living room,” Millie informed me.It was then that I noticed that she had been using a very low voice since she got back from checking who was at the door. Meanwhile, I had been speaking with my normal voice. Being that my apartment was tiny, it was quite possible that Chase had already heard me.Damn!“Don’t lie to me, Millie,” I warned her firmly, subconsciously lowering my voice too.“You know I won’t do that,” Millie said.“What is he doing here?” I asked Millie and she shrugged.“How would I know?” She asked, clueless.“Why didn’t you ask him?” I questioned Millie. My thoughts were already running in different directions, and I could not wrap my head around
Carmen’s POV“Rise and shine, Carmen Vega!” Millie announced loudly, forcing me to wake up from my sleep.I had slept really late because of the anxiety of what the day held, and I was still trying to catch some sleep before Millie walked in like a tornado announcing her presence.“Gosh, Millie, do you even realize that I am trying to get some sleep?” I asked Millie as I managed to open my eyes. She made things worse by going to the window and opening it, allowing the brightness of the morning to penetrate into the room, almost blinding me in the process. “This is cruelty, Millie,” I grumbled dejectedly.I really didn’t want to wake up today. I had wished to sleep so badly that I would skip this very day and wake up the next day. It would be worse, but by then, I wouldn’t have to feel this way about the day. I really didn’t want to deal with anything today, and certainly not my family’s intimate party and the event I was attending with Chase Maddox later today. The day just began for
Chase’s POV“You really shouldn’t have fired Jonathan,” Terry told me as he walked into my living room.I rolled my eyes tiredly.I wasn’t expecting Terry. I wasn’t even expecting anyone.“I am busy, Terry,” I stated.I was checking out my outfit for the third time today when Terry walked in freely as though he owned the place, but then again, he was the only one who could walk right into my living room this freely.“And we already talked about this over the phone, so I don’t understand why you are here talking to me about it again,” I added tiredly.“You and I know that Jonathan is very useful to you,” Terry stated.“No one is too useful to be indispensable,” I retorted.“He has been working for you for a while now and you know that what he did was just for your own good,” Terry said. “Besides, I don’t see anything wrong with it,” he added.“You are lucky that you are my brother,” I told him.“And that I am not under your employ, so I can say whatever the heck I want to say,” Terry s
Carmen’s POV“Are you going to tell Chase?” Millie asked me.“What would I tell him?” I asked Millie in return. “Do I just go to him and say that Mr. Lawrence and Coach Fred accosted me, and Jonathan Price came to my house to speak to me?” I questioned her further.“More like attacked you,” Millie corrected.“Is that what I should tell Chase?” I asked Millie angrily.“But you have to tell him, Carmen,” Millie insisted.I shook my head and began to pace around. It just didn’t seem right to tell Chase about it because I had no idea how he would take it or what he would do. What if he didn’t believe me? What if things escalated beyond this?I had already given Chase too much trouble, and I didn’t think I wanted to get into more of it.“I am not going to say a word about it,” I said with certainty. My tone was so stiff that Millie understood that I didn’t want to talk about it again.“What then are you going to do?” Millie asked.“I don’t know, I guess I will just have to think of somethi
