I turned white at the thought of my husband in bed with another woman. Especially this one.
“Are you sleeping in the same bed?” I knew Leo saw to her personally but sleeping in the same bed was past unacceptable. It was out of line. “Don’t blame him, Claire. He was just so tired after caring for me last night.” She lets out a chuckle. Charlotte had no regard for me or my marriage and had taken every opportunity to make that clear. “Why are you calling again?” She asks as if I’m disturbing her although she answered my husband’s phone. “Please let Leo know that I’d like to meet him for dinner at that old restaurant we love when he wakes up.” I tried my best not to sound hurt as I tell her. It was my wedding anniversary, and he had run off to be with Charlotte once again. This time, even sleeping in her bed. “I’ll let him know. Happy Anniversary, Claire.” She muttered my name in disgust and reminded me of my anniversary just to mock me and remind me that on my anniversary, my husband had run to her side. Not only that but slept in her bed and had forgotten about me. “Thank -“ I start to say as Charlotte hangs up. I feel a heavy lump in my throat threatening to sink with my tears. I sat in bed alone for a moment and decided to get up and get dressed. I plan on telling Leo about my pregnancy today. Even if his love for me is outweighed by my love for him and his love for Charlotte. I walk to closet and begin dressing comfortable for the occasion and begin applying makeup to cover up my tired puffiness brought on by my tears. I then head over to Bennington - an old Dutch eatery we enjoyed going too and give my name for the reservation. It’s not a Michelin star location but it was where I first met Leo and he saved me from a little trouble I was having. I had been harassed by a group of men and he portrayed himself as my friend until I was able to leave safely. A few years later, I finally finished my courses and graduated from the most prestige architecture school in the country but was at a stand-still in starting my career as most companies sought a male figure for the position. After a pressure-led search, I found that Leo’s company had posted a job opportunity as the secretary to the president and applied. After one short interview, I was given an offer that I gladly accepted. I was excited to walk into his office on the very first day but he didn’t remember me. I expected him to at least recognize me and I was mildly disappointed to know that he didn’t. It probably didn’t helped that I was dressed like a boy in baggy clothes with a baseball hat. He had no idea of the admiration or love I held in my heart for him. I couldn’t tell him with the inferiority I felt. I sat there waiting at the restaurant. It was noon which when I had met him in his office for the first time - all those years ago. He knew my dedication to important times and would be here any moment. Only I’ve been waiting for over an hour and he hasn’t come. I decide to call him but I’m redirected to voicemail. So I resorted to call someone who I rarely spoke to and who had no interest in speaking to me. “Hi Emilia, do you where I can find Leo?” Emilia is Leo’s sister. This meaning she’s also a part of his elite and successful family who have never liked the idea of a secretary becoming a billionaire’s wife. “Of course, I do. He’s at our family home. I thought you would’ve accompanied him for the big celebration we’re hosting.” I furrow my brows in confusion. “What celebration?” Emilia answered in a condescending tone with a hint of amusement towards my confusion “Did Leonardo not tell you? Of course, he wouldn’t. Well, we are celebrating Charlotte’s big news. Happy Anniversary though.” I hear Emilia laugh for a moment and hang up as I try to ask what news she was referring to. Charlotte? I stood there feeling my heart sink. Leo had gone to Charlotte and missed our anniversary, and I was left feeling confused by Emilia’s information. I get up to leave hastily and call a cab - giving them the address for Leo’s family home. Once I arrived at the family home, I was answered by their butler holding the door open for me - explaining everyone had taken to the living room for an important announcement. I head to the living room where I see Charlotte sitting in her wheelchair surrounded by Leo’s family and friends - all in excitement and anticipation of her news. They all smiled, doted on and celebrated her with acceptance while I stood there as an unwanted guest or intruder. After my luxurious shower, I change into a comfortable outfit - black, of course and find keys to one of the many vehicles I had abandoned outside when I was taken forcibly to that looney bin. I jump into the front seat and hear the wind hissing against the windows as I push the ignition on and watch as the car roars to life without hesitation. My first destination would be Leo’s house. I’m nothing less than certain that I can find Claire there. After a short drive, I land at the same house where I began this journey of separation between that grotesque Claire and my beloved Leonardo. Only this time, I was left speechless. A ‘For Sale’ was picketed in the front of the driveway and the house seemed to be vacant. I get out of the car and rush to the door as the rain continues furiously, almost whisking away my umbrella. I knock and hear no response. After a few seconds of silence, I look over to some windows and try to peek inside. I’m shocked to see the house is completely vacant. No
I can’t help but feel my entire body shiver as the power plunges and the generator takes the lead, kicking on within mere moments. This storm made me feel more anxious by the second. I instinctively look over at our boys who are sleeping carelessly in their bassinets with Leo laying on bed just in front of them. ‘It’s only a storm. We’re going to be fine. We’re safe.’ A mantra I’ve found myself repeating internally since the mention of this storm hitting our coastline. I’ve hone through countless earthquakes, severe thunderstorms and even tornados before, but for some reason - this one made me feel the most afraid and uneasy and I couldn’t even begin to explain why. I take one last look at Leo and the boys before heading downstairs to get a snack and pump for the next feeding. To my surprise, Elena was already in the kitchen making my plate. I jump as I notice her. “Oh! I’m sorry, Ms.Claire. I didn’t mean to startle you.” Elena says softly as she reaches for my arm gently.“No, tha
It’s been three hours and I watch as the clock strikes the opening hour of the storm. The lightening, wind and rain have all started to pick up and I’m almost elated to see my plan fall into place. One power outage and I’d be free. I wait in anticipation of my new freedom as the lights begin to flicker. I then see my mother appear vaguely for a second - she was in the corner and just as she materializes, she disappears. The medication had helped with her departure, I’m sure. Although, I couldn’t care less about her right now. I continue waiting until I hear the electricity surge and I’m left in complete darkness. “It’s time.” I smile as I rush out of bed, pull my door open and head two doors over to the designated triage room before kicking in the vent and climbing inside quietly while putting the vent back into place. The funny thing is that I didn’t know if the doors would even open for me to escape because they lock automatically behind them - luckily for me, they were indeed e
I watch as Jasmine checks the pantry once again. For a woman with such a healthy and slim appearance, it was impossible to miss just how much she ate. My mother will be one proud woman once she’s met Jasmine’s appetite.“The food isn’t going to disappear, Jas. Relax.” I could hear Nathan say from just across the kitchen. He wasn’t wrong but that wasn’t going to stop Jasmine from checking and second-guessing anyways.“I just don’t know if this is enough for the three of us if anything happens.” She saws through furrowed brows.“I’m sure we’ll be just fine. I’m going to step into the living room for a second. I got to call Leo and confirm our arrangement.” I had offered that Claire be kept safe by an officer; pending the current severe weather forecast. I pull out my phone and wait for Leo to answer.“Mason, is everything alright?” His immediate concern was evident.“Hey man, yeah. Everything is just fine. I just wanted to see when I should send Officer Paul over for surveillance.” “Le
I watch the news report as I breastfeed the boys and lay them back in their bassinets. “Ms. Claire, there is no need to worry. Mr. Leo already has generator hooked up to house and I have supplies.” Elena interjects as she hands me an array of healthy snacks to replenish my milk supply.“Something about this storm just makes me feel uneasy.”“You check on your family and friends? Maybe they can come spend the storm here too?” She offers.“Yes, Jas, Mason and Nathan are staying at Jas’ house down the street. Julia is home safe. Matthew, Starla and Scarlett took a trip to her mother’s house just east of here and my mother-in-law has flown to Paris for the weekend.” I couldn’t rest until I checked on everyone first.“It will be alright, Ms. Claire. Mr. Leo and I will be here with you and the babies.”“Thank you, Elena.” I try to reassure her with an uneasy smile. Elena takes it as a good sign and leaves. I’m about to sigh when Leo walks through the bedroom door. I freeze, oxygen pooling
After seeing the full extent of the sociopathic therapist I’ve intertwined myself with, I felt disgusted with him. More so, I felt disgusted by the idea of his collusion and found myself showering and scrubbing myself vigorously to absolve myself of any trace of him both on and inside my body. This only fueled my strong urge to escape and ensure I wouldn’t become trapped by a human seed ever again. Leo would never accept me if I was pregnant with another man’s child. I look in the mirror as I brush my hair when I feel the faint presence of my mother. What littler alone time I’ve had since my admission here has been mostly if not always disturbed by her unwanted presence.“You’ll never be clean.” She speaks softly from just outside the bathroom door. Her presence was noticeably weak and I’m almost certain that it was due to her fighting to break through with my medication still at bay. I turn to say something snappy but I’m taken aback when I see her. Held of her body was covered in b
