Chapter 1

The first thing Alessia Conti noticed about Lake Como was that it remembered.

The mountains remembered every promise whispered beneath their shadows.

The lake remembered every goodbye spoken beside its quiet waters.

And the old villas remembered every secret their walls had been forced to keep.

Six years ago, Alessia had left this place with a broken heart and a promise.

She promised herself she would never return.

Not because Lake Como had hurt her.

Because it had given her the happiest and most painful moments of her life.

And both were connected to one man.

Lorenzo Moretti.

The car moved slowly along the winding road overlooking the lake.

Alessia stared outside the window, watching familiar landscapes pass by.

The cafés.

The stone pathways.

The elegant villas belonging to families whose names carried centuries of history.

Everything looked exactly the same.

Except her.

Six years ago, she had been a young woman who believed love was enough.

She believed if two people loved each other deeply enough, nothing could separate them.

She had been wrong.

Love was powerful.

But so were secrets.

The folder on her lap contained the reason she had returned.

The restoration contract for Grand Hotel Vittoria.

A once-famous Italian landmark that had fallen into financial and structural decline.

For most architects, historians, and restoration specialists, the opportunity would have been a dream.

The hotel was legendary.

Built over a century ago, it represented the elegance of old Italy.

A place where politicians, celebrities, and powerful families had once gathered.

A place where the Moretti family name had become a symbol of wealth.

And now she had been hired to save it.

The irony was almost cruel.

Because saving Grand Hotel Vittoria meant returning to the one family she had spent years trying to forget.

“Signorina Conti.”

The driver’s voice pulled her away from her thoughts.

“We have arrived.”

Alessia looked ahead.

There it was.

Grand Hotel Vittoria.

Standing proudly above Lake Como.

Beautiful.

Historic.

Unforgiving.

The building seemed untouched by time.

Unlike the people whose lives had been changed because of it.

She took a slow breath.

She could do this.

She was not the same woman who left six years ago.

She was stronger.

More experienced.

More careful.

She would come here, do her work, and leave.

No emotions.

No memories.

No Lorenzo Moretti.

The moment she stepped out of the car, she felt the atmosphere.

Something was wrong.

The hotel was undergoing restoration, but the workers moved with unusual tension.

Employees whispered in small groups.

Executives avoided eye contact.

The excitement expected from such an important project was missing.

Instead, there was uncertainty.

Alessia adjusted her coat and walked toward the entrance.

Before she reached the door, it opened.

And the world seemed to stop.

Lorenzo Moretti stood there.

For six years, Alessia had tried to forget his face.

She had failed.

Some memories did not disappear.

They waited.

And seeing him again proved that.

He looked different.

The Lorenzo she remembered had been warm.

Patient.

The man who used to make her laugh when life became difficult.

The man who held her hand and promised that nothing would ever come between them.

That man was gone.

The person standing before her was colder.

Sharper.

A billionaire who carried power like a second skin.

His dark suit was perfectly fitted.

His expression was controlled.

His eyes, however, revealed something else.

Pain.

Hidden beneath anger.

“Alessia.”

Her name sounded different when he said it.

Like something he had tried not to remember.

“Lorenzo.”

A silence followed.

Not an uncomfortable silence.

A dangerous one.

The silence of two people who knew exactly where the other person could hurt them.

“I didn’t expect you to accept the contract.”

His tone was polite.

Professional.

Almost distant.

Alessia lifted her chin.

“I didn’t expect you to be the owner.”

A faint smile touched his lips.

There was no warmth in it.

“Then I suppose we are both surprised.”

She tightened her grip on the folder.

“I am here to work.”

“Good.”

He stepped aside.

“Because this time, we will keep things professional.”

The words were simple.

But she understood what he meant.

No discussions about the past.

No questions.

No emotions.

Inside the hotel, Lorenzo guided her through the restoration plans.

“The western wing requires immediate attention.”

“The foundation has suffered damage.”

“The historical archives need to be reviewed before any changes are made.”

Alessia listened carefully.

She focused on the work.

Not him.

Not the memories his presence awakened.

Until she saw it.

A symbol carved into the wooden frame near the archive entrance.

Her steps stopped.

Her heart tightened.

She knew that symbol.

She had seen it hundreds of times.

In her father’s old notebooks.

“Where did you get this?”

Lorenzo turned.

“What?”

She pointed at the carving.

“This symbol.”

His expression changed.

“You recognize it?”

Alessia hesitated.

“My father used it.”

For the first time since she arrived...

Lorenzo looked surprised.

“Your father?”

Before she could answer, a loud crash echoed from the archive room.

They both turned.

Then ran.

The archive was a mess.

Documents covered the floor.

A window stood open.

Someone had broken in.

Lorenzo immediately checked the room.

“Nothing was stolen?”

Alessia barely heard him.

Her attention was fixed on the desk.

A single envelope sat there.

Waiting.

Her name was written across it.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

Her breath disappeared.

Because she knew that handwriting.

She would recognize it anywhere.

Her father’s.

Antonio Conti had disappeared six years ago.

Everyone believed he was gone forever.

But somehow...

A message from him was waiting inside Grand Hotel Vittoria.

With trembling fingers, Alessia picked up the envelope.

Lorenzo noticed her expression.

“What is it?”

She didn’t answer.

She slowly turned the env

elope over.

There was writing on the back.

A warning.

Four words.

Words that made her entire body go cold.

DO NOT TRUST LORENZO.

Alessia looked up.

Lorenzo was watching her.

Waiting for an explanation.

And for the first time since returning to Lake Como...

She wondered if the man she once loved was the person she should fear most.
