I was supposed to be a bride in five days. walking down the aisle with my childhood friend and my boyfriend for five years. The only man I ever loved all my life.

Instead, I am sitting alone in a dimly lit bar, clutching a glass of vodka like it was the only thing holding me together.

“Who the hell are you to pity me?” I muttered under my breath before downing the drink in one go.

I winced slightly as the alcohol burned its way down my throat, sharp and unforgiving—but it was nothing compared to the pain clawing through my chest.

My fingers trembled as I poured another glass.

“Raphael” the name alone felt like poison.

Four years of loving and trusting him, building my world around him… only to find out it had all been lies.

My chest tightened, and a broken laugh escaped my lips.

I squeezed my eyes shut, but it only made it worse.

The painful lump in my chest became bigger and no matter how much I drank, it wouldn’t go away.

I had gone to his apartment earlier that evening, my heart light with excitement.

I had wanted to surprise him—

God! I was such a fool…

The door hadn’t been locked.

I remember smiling as I stepped inside, calling his name softly… until I heard voices coming from the bedroom.

Raphael’s voice rang clear, laced with that calm arrogance.

“I really do feel pity for her,” Raphael said, his tone almost bored. Ever since she lost her mom, am all she has left. If she finds out that I never love her—

My steps froze.

Pity? “Why would you pity her?” A familiar voice cut in sharply.

It was Vivian, my stepsister.

I thought I misheard. Because what will my sister be doing in my fiancé’s bedroom? I was still doubting myself when Vivian’s voice said “are you seriously worried about my sister right now when I am next to you? She said almost mad.

“Of course not, darling,” Raphael replied quickly, his voice softening in a way I had never heard before. “You know I only agreed to this wedding just to be close to you. It’s always been you Vivian.” That’s how desperate I’m to be with you.

She’s nothing but a stepping stone.

My heart sank further to my feet.

My hand flew to my mouth, muffling the sound of my breathing.

Your mother would never accept me,he continued.

“I know your mom wants a billionaire for you. But that wouldn’t stop us from being together. I have nothing to my name. Marrying Lucy is just… the easiest way in.”

Each word felt like a knife sinking deeper into my chest.

“I will coax her to hand everything she has to me after the wedding anyway,” he added with a low chuckle. “With how much she loves me, it won’t be hard. I already have everything planned out. Once I get what I want, I’ll divorce her… and have lots of fun with you.

Vivian laughed.

A soft, pleased sound.

“I don’t care about her,” he said coldly. “She’s always been pathetic.”

Raphael scoffed.

“She won’t even sleep with me,” he muttered. “Always talking about waiting until marriage. All she does is confess how much she loves me— like I care. If she really did love me like she claimed, she would’ve given herself to me already. But you…”

His voice dropped into something darker. Intimate.

“I can’t get enough of you.”

“ You're so naughty!” Vivian said laughing.

I felt as if a thunderstorm had just struck me.

I pressed my hand to my chest, struggling to breathe as loud and lustful echoes of passion intensified from inside the room.

The rest of their words blurred into meaningless noise, My mind was a storm of betrayal, disbelief, and rage.

Raphael, the man I had pledged my life to, had been lying and cheating on me and the woman who had an affair with him was none other than my step sister.

I have been too naive. For years, I endured bullying from my stepmother and stepsister. For my father’s sake. Have always believed every single lie that came out from Raphael’s mouth.

A strangled sound escaped my throat, and I stumbled backward, barely managing to stay silent as I rushed out of the apartment.

I didn’t remember how I got into a taxi.

I didn’t remember giving the driver directions.

All I knew was that I ended up in a bar, broken and humiliated.

I let out a shaky breath and lifted the glass again, my vision already blurring.

“I gave you everything…” I whispered.

The tears came hot and unstoppable, sliding down my cheeks no matter how hard I tried to hold them back. The tears wouldn’t stop.

The bar was filled with low music and distant chatter, but it all felt muted—like I was trapped in my own world of pain.

I laughed weakly, shaking my head.

Five years!

Five fucking years! I had wasted it on Raphael! Loving him with all my might! Loving him with all my soul! Making him meals! Paying almost all his bills. Thinking I was doing the right thing as a soon-to-be wife.

What have I been doing for five years then?

All I ever wished for was getting married to him and having beautiful babies together. Was that too much to ask for?

“I’ve been such an idiot…

That moment I decided that I would no longer let myself be taken for a fool.

The woman everyone took for a fool died tonight.

I would never let myself be used nor pity by anyone anymore.

I pushed myself off the stool, grabbing my bag, but the room spun violently around me.

“Shit…” I muttered, stumbling forward.

My legs gave out beneath me.

I braced for the hard impact of the floor—

But instead of hitting the ground, I fell into someone’s arms—

“The person he was convicted of killing,” Song Wei said, “was a man your mother had been seeing at the same time she was involved with Daniel Eze.” “What are you saying?” Vivian asked. “I’m saying,” Song Wei said slowly, “ when your mother was young. She was working as a personal assistant — ambitious, capable, trying to build something from very little.” She paused. “She was involved with Daniel Eze at the time. Vivian stared at her. “But your mother was also involved with another man,” Song Wei continued. “A married man with money and position — “Daniel Eze found out,” Song Wei said. “There was a confrontation between the two men. It escalated. The other man died.” The silence that followed was the kind that has weight to it. “Daniel Eze went to prison,” Song Wei continued. “Your mother moved on. She eventually married Richard Vale and Built the life you grew up in.” “Built it,” Vivian repeated slowly, Her voice was completely flat. “on top of all of that.” Song Wei didn’

The photograph slipped from Vivian’s fingers. It landed face-up on the table between them — and Vivian stared at it with the particular stillness of someone whose mind was moving very fast while the rest of her had gone completely quiet. A Middle aged man— Dark eyes that held something hollowed out and weathered — the specific look of someone who had spent a long time in a confined space. His jawline was sharp beneath an unshaved face. Vivian’s brows pulled together slowly. Something about the face was pulling at her memory. The way a word sits on the tip of your tongue but completely out of reach. She leaned forward slightly. And then — it hit her. One month ago. It had been an ordinary morning Vivian had been standing just inside the front gate, adjusting the strap of her bag, half-listening to the sound of Evelyn’s heels on the pathway behind her. The taxi was already waiting at the curb. She had pushed the gate open when she noticed him. A man standing directly across

“Why did you really agree to the contract?” I asked. The question came out before I decided to ask it. He was quiet for a moment. “I told you,” he said. “It suited me.” “That’s not all of it,” I said. His jaw shifted slightly. A small acknowledgement. “No,” he admitted. “It’s not.” I waited. He set his spoon down carefully. “You walked into my office,” he said slowly, “and proposed marriage to a man you barely know. With nothing but complete honesty and a reason that had nothing to do with money or what I have." He looked at me. “Do you know how rare that is, Lucy?” I said nothing. “Every person who has ever approached me,” he continued quietly, “wanted something from the version everyone else sees. The CEO. The Cole name. What comes with it.” His eyes held mine without wavering. “You walked in wanting none of that. You wanted to protect yourself from people who had hurt you. You were completely honest about it. You didn’t dress it up or pretend it was something more acce

The photos went live at exactly nine the next morning. I was still in bed when my phone kept buzzing. I reached for it slowly — blinking against the pale morning light filtering through the curtains — as I stared at the screen with the particular confusion of someone whose brain hadn’t fully committed to being awake yet. Forty seven notifications. Then the number stopped updating and simply read — too many to display. I sat up. Margaret had sent a single message at 9:03 a.m. “Check the numbers. Today is going to be a very good day.” I opened the first article. The photo filled my screen — Andre and I on the rooftop, caught mid-laugh in that completely unplanned moment neither of us had noticed Dana capturing. His hand at my waist. My face tilted toward his. The golden light stretched long and warm across both of us The headline read — Andre Cole Is Getting Married — And His Fiancée Has Completely Stolen Our Hearts. I stared at it. Then I scrolled. Comments in the thousan

I heard them before I reached the door.Vivian’s voice — sharp and agitated — cutting through the entrance hall the moment I pushed open the front door. The particular frequency of it told me this conversation had been running for a while.I stood in the doorway for exactly one second. Then I remembered that I was done rearranging myself around this house.I walked in.My bag was over my shoulder. My eyes were fixed on the staircase at the far end of the sitting room — the most direct route to my room and the closest thing to peace this house had ever offered me. I moved through the entrance hall without breaking stride, without looking left or right.“Lucy.”Evelyn’s voice landed precisely where she intended it — right at the base of my spine.I stopped.Turned slowly. They were both seated— Evelyn arranged on the sofa with the deliberate composure of a woman who had been waiting and needed you to know it. Vivian beside her with red-rimmed eyes, holding herself together through she

The rooftop location Margaret had chosen was perfect. Golden light. Clean skyline. The kind of backdrop that made everything look intentional — I stood at the edge of it all in a dress I hadn’t chosen myself, my hair styled and pinned beautifully. I watch the photographer set up her equipment.Dana looked up when Adrian and I took our positions and tilted her head slightly — the way someone does when what they see doesn’t quite match what they expected. The first few shots were stiff. I and Adrian felt it. Dana absolutely knew it. “Okay,” she said pleasantly. Let’s start simple. She lowered her camera after the third attempt and looked at us with the patient expression of someone who had seen this before and knew exactly how to fix it. “Relax,” she encouraged, “Mr Cole, look at her like you mean it.” She shifted her gaze to me. “ Mrs Lucy — you’re standing like you’re waiting for a bus. This is your engagement shoot, not a queue.” Adrian glanced at me sideways. “

By the time I stepped out of the towering Cole Group building, the evening air felt colder than it should have.Or maybe it was just me.Everything inside me had changed.I had just proposed a contract marriage to one of the most powerful men in the city. And he had said yes.A strange thrill cours

I froze the moment he called my name. A sharp wave of surprise hit me—I didn’t remember telling him who I was yet—My brows furrowed as I stared at him, my heart beginning to pound for reasons I couldn’t explain.“Do you… know me?” I asked, my voice quieter than I intended, laced with confusion. Evelyn chuckled softly. “He finally agreed to meet you. “Andre Cole?” Vivian’s voice rose in disbelief—then delight. “The CEO of Cole Group?”“Oh my God… Mum!” Vivian squealed, her voice filled with pure excitement. How come mom? He always refused all his dates. “Are you serious?”“Of course I am,”

The door slammed shut behind me, as I walked into the vale residence. the sound echoing through the marble halls like the final note of something dead.“I’m not marrying Raphael.”My voice was calm. Mrs Evelyn didn’t look at me. She simply took a shallow breath before replying coldly. “Really?” s
