POV: Aria

The cabin erupted into chaos.

One moment, Aria had been standing at the window, watching the morning light filter through the trees, her hand resting on her growing belly. The next, Damien was shouting her name, his voice sharp with urgency, and the world dissolved into motion and fear.

"Victor's men! They're here!"

Aria grabbed the folder of evidence, shoving it into her bag while Damien raced to wake Grace. Within seconds, they were running toward the car, the engine already roaring to life as Damien slid behind the wheel.

"Go!" Aria shouted, her eyes fixed on the headlights emerging from the trees. "They're here!"

Damien floored the accelerator, and they shot forward, gravel flying as they tore down the winding dirt road. Behind them, the black SUV emerged from the trees, its headlights cutting through the darkness like twin blades of death.

"Hang on," Damien said, his voice grim.

He took the first turn at breakneck speed, the car skidding on the loose gravel. Aria gripped the door handle, her heart pounding, her eyes fixed on the rearview mirror. She could see the SUV's headlights growing larger, closer, more menacing.

"They're still behind us," she said. "They're gaining."

"I know." Damien's jaw tightened. "I need to lose them."

He took another turn, then another, weaving through the narrow roads with terrifying precision. The trees blurred past, a dark tunnel of green and shadow. Behind them, the SUV followed, relentless and unyielding.

Aria's mind raced through a thousand terrible possibilities. Victor's men were professionals—hired killers, she suspected, or at least men who wouldn't hesitate to use violence. If they caught them, the evidence would be destroyed, and she and her family would disappear without a trace.

"Grace," Aria said, turning to her grandmother. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine." Grace's voice was steady, but her face was pale. "Just focus on the road."

Damien took a sharp turn, and the car fishtailed, tires screaming against the asphalt. Aria felt her stomach lurch, but she forced herself to stay calm. She'd survived worse. She'd survive this too.

"There's a main road ahead," Damien said. "If I can reach it—"

A sudden jolt threw her forward. The car swerved, and Aria heard the sickening sound of metal tearing against metal.

"They hit us," she said, her voice barely a whisper.

"I know." Damien's voice was calm, controlled. "I'm going to try to lose them in the woods."

He turned the wheel sharply, and the car plunged into the trees, branches scraping against the windows, the headlights cutting a path through the darkness. Behind them, the SUV followed, its engine roaring like a hungry beast.

"Damien—" Aria started.

"I know what I'm doing." His voice was steady. "Just trust me."

Aria looked at him, at the man who'd broken her heart and saved her life. She didn't know if she could trust him. But right now, she had no choice.

"Fine," she said. "Just get us out of here."

They drove for what felt like hours, weaving through the trees, trying to lose their pursuers. The SUV stayed with them, relentless and determined.

Aria's heart pounded in her chest, her hands gripping the door handle so tightly her knuckles were white. She could hear Grace's quiet breathing in the back seat, could see Damien's profile illuminated by the dashboard lights—focused, determined, unyielding.

He was different now, she realized. The man who'd divorced her, who'd believed the lies without question, was gone. In his place was someone who fought for her, who protected her, who was willing to risk everything to keep her safe.

She didn't know if that was enough to earn her forgiveness. But it was enough to make her hope.

"Damien," she said, her voice steady despite the chaos. "I need to tell you something."

"Now?" His eyes flicked to her, then back to the road.

"Yes." Aria took a deep breath. "I'm pregnant. I've been pregnant since the divorce."

Damien's hands tightened on the steering wheel, his knuckles white. "I know."

Aria stared at him. "You know?"

"I saw the hospital records. When you collapsed." His voice was rough. "I've known for months."

Aria felt tears prick at her eyes. "Why didn't you say anything?"

"Because I had no right." His voice cracked. "I destroyed our marriage. I had no right to demand anything from you. I just—" He paused, taking a sharp turn. "I just wanted you to be safe. I wanted our baby to be safe."

Aria looked at him, at the man who'd broken her heart and was trying so desperately to put it back together. She didn't know what the future held. She didn't know if they'd ever find their way back to each other.

But in this moment, she knew one thing for certain.

She still loved him.

"We'll talk about this later," she said, her voice barely a whisper. "If we survive."

Damien nodded, his jaw tight. "We'll survive. I promise."

Suddenly, the SUV was gone.

Aria stared at the rearview mirror, her heart pounding. "Where did they go?"

"I don't know." Damien's voice was tense. "But I'm not stopping to find out."

They drove on, the trees thinning, the road opening up ahead. And then, finally, they were out of the woods, the city lights glimmering in the distance.

"We made it," Aria breathed. "We actually made it."

Damien nodded, but his expression was still grim. "We made it this far. But Victor isn't going to stop. He's going to keep coming."

Aria nodded slowly. "Then we need to stop him first."

They found a hotel on the outskirts of the city, a nondescript building that wouldn't attract attention. Damien booked a room under a false name, and they settled in, exhausted but alive.

Aria sank onto the bed, her body trembling with adrenaline. "I can't believe we made it."

"Neither can I." Damien sat beside her, his grey eyes searching her face. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine." Aria's voice was steady, even if her hands were shaking. "I've been through worse."

Damien reached out, his hand covering hers. "I know. But I need to hear you say it. I need to know you're okay."

Aria looked at their joined hands, at the warmth of his touch, at the concern in his eyes. She'd spent months building walls around her heart, protecting herself from further pain.

But right now, in this moment, she didn't want walls. She wanted comfort. She wanted connection. She wanted him.

"I'm okay," she said softly. "I'm okay."

Damien nodded, his grip tightening. "Good. That's good."

They sat in silence, their hands joined, the weight of the past few days pressing down on them. Aria didn't know what the future held. She didn't know if they'd survive Victor's attacks.

But right now, she was grateful for this moment. For this connection. For him.

"Damien," she said finally. "Thank you. For everything."

Damien turned to face her, his grey eyes soft. "You don't have to thank me. I'd do anything for you."

Aria felt her heart clench. "I know."

She leaned into him, just slightly, and felt his arm wrap around her shoulders. It was warm and familiar and achingly tender. She closed her eyes, letting herself feel safe for the first time in months.

"Stay with me tonight," she whispered. "Just hold me. I don't want to be alone."

Damien's arms tightened around her. "I'm not going anywhere. I promise."

Aria fell asleep in his arms, her head on his chest, her heart finally at peace.

When she woke, the morning light was filtering through the curtains, casting soft patterns across the bed. Damien was still there, his arm wrapped around her, his breathing slow and even. He looked younger in sleep, the lines of tension smoothed from his face.

Aria studied him for a long moment, tracing the lines of his jaw with her eyes. She'd loved this man once. Loved him with everything she had. And despite everything, despite the pain and the betrayal, she still loved him.

She reached out, her fingers brushing his cheek. His eyes fluttered open, meeting hers with a softness that made her heart ache.

"Good morning," he said, his voice rough with sleep.

"Good morning." Aria pulled back, suddenly self-conscious. "We should get ready. We have a long day ahead."

Damien nodded, sitting up. "Agreed. But Aria—"

She turned to face him, her expression guarded. "Yes?"

"I meant what I said." His voice was raw. "I'm going to spend the rest of my life earning your trust. One day at a time."

Aria was silent for a long moment. Then she nodded slowly. "I know. And I'm willing to let you try."

It wasn't forgiveness. It wasn't even close. But it was a beginning.

An hour later, they gathered in the hotel room, the evidence spread across the small table. Grace sat in the corner, her expression determined. Aria stood by the window, her arms crossed. And Damien paced back and forth, his brow furrowed in concentration.

"We need to go to the authorities," he said. "Today. Before Victor has a chance to make another move."

Aria nodded slowly. "I agree. But we need to be smart about it. We need to make sure the evidence is secure, that we have backups, that we can prove chain of custody."

"Agreed." Damien stopped pacing, his grey eyes meeting hers. "I've already contacted a lawyer I trust. He's ready to meet us."

Aria nodded, a flicker of hope rising in her chest. "Then let's do this."

The drive to the lawyer's office was tense. Aria kept her eyes on the road, scanning for any sign of pursuit. But the streets were quiet, the city going about its business, unaware of the battle being waged in its shadows.

When they finally arrived at the office building, Aria felt a wave of relief wash over her. They'd made it. They were safe.

"Ready?" Damien asked, his hand on the door.

Aria took a deep breath. "Ready."

They walked into the building, the evidence tucked securely in Aria's bag. They were about to change everything.

And nothing would ever be the same.
