Clara's expression didn't change, not even slightly. She looked at Vanessa with the same polite smile she'd worn throughout their conversation.

"What do you mean by that?"

Vanessa blinked, almost as though she hadn't expected the question.

"Hm?"

"You said you were relieved nothing worse happened."

A faint crease appeared between Vanessa's brows before she smiled again.

"Oh."

She waved a hand lightly.

"I just meant... after everything that's been happening around the company lately."

Clara stared at the tablet in Sophie's hands. For a brief second, the words refused to register. Then they did.MATTEO DEVEREAUX'S PR MANAGER... OR SOMETHING MORE?Her fingers tightened around the edge of the tablet. The office suddenly felt too quiet, too warm and too small."...Where did this come from?" Her voice came out steadier than she felt.Sophie shook her head. "It started on a gossip blog about twenty minutes ago. Three other entertainment pages have already reposted it."Julien looked up from his laptop. "And the engagement is climbing."Clara lowered her eyes and continued reading. The article never outright accused anyone. It didn't have to. It simply asked questions.Who exactly is Clara Reynolds? Why has an external PR consultant suddenly become Matteo Devereaux's closest professional associate? Why was she seen entering Mr Devereaux's private estate before the charity gala? Why did she leave the estate yesterday morning? Why was she standing beside him after the recen

Clara's breath caught. For one suspended moment, neither of them moved. Her palm rested against Matteo's chest, the steady beat of his heart unmistakable beneath the crisp fabric of his shirt. His hand was still around her waist, firm enough to keep her balanced, yet careful enough that she never felt trapped. They looked at each other. They were too close.Far too close.Clara was the first to regain her senses. She cleared her throat softly and stepped back, smoothing an imaginary crease on her blouse."I... was just coming out."Matteo lowered his hand without a word."I noticed."An awkward silence settled between them. She forced herself to meet his eyes."Thank you... for earlier.""For what?""For catching me."His expression remained unreadable."I wasn't going to let you fall."It was such a simple statement. Matter-of-fact. Yet for some reason, it lingered in Clara's chest. She nodded once."Right."Matteo glanced into her room."Finished packing?"She looked down at the ove

"Oh." She waved a hand lightly. "I just meant... after everything that's been happening around the company lately." The explanation came easily. Before Clara could ask another question, Vanessa glanced at her wristwatch. "Oh no." "I promised I'd meet the finance department." She picked up the folder she'd placed on the desk earlier. "We'll talk later." Then she was gone. The office door clicked shut. Clara stared at it for a few seconds. She slowly leaned back in her chair. Maybe… Maybe she'd been wrong about Matteo and Vanessa. She could admit that now. But that didn't necessarily mean she was wrong ab

The ride to Devereaux Franchise Holdings was unusually quiet. Clara sat in the passenger seat, watching the morning traffic glide past the window. She still couldn't get the image of the suspect smiling at her out of her head. It hadn't been a normal smile. It had been... knowing as though someone else was waiting behind him. Matteo drove with one hand resting on the steering wheel. His eyes never left the road, but his thoughts hadn't left the police station either. After a long silence, he finally spoke. "Did you suspect anyone?" Clara turned to him. "The police asked that already." "I'm asking differently." She looked at him for a moment before facing the window again. "I did." "Who?" "My best friend." Matteo's brows knitted together slightly. "Tara?" She nodded. "I thought... maybe she told someone." Her voice carried a hint of guilt. "She was the only person who knew I was the woman in that picture." "The kiss." "Yes." Matteo remained quiet. "I even convinced

Clara barely slept. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the shattered window. The loud crash. The shadow climbing into her house. The ringing doorbell. She jerked awake again before dawn, her breathing uneven. For several seconds, she simply stared at the unfamiliar ceiling above her. Then reality settled. She wasn't in her house. She was inside Matteo Devereaux's estate. The room was too quiet. She rubbed her face with both hands before sitting upright. Nyx stretched lazily at the foot of the bed as though nothing unusual had happened the previous night. "You slept through all of it." The cat blinked. Then yawned. Clara laughed softly. "Must be nice." She climbed out of bed and walked toward the bathroom. A long shower helped wash away some of the fear clinging to her skin, but not all of it. By the time she finished dressing in one of her usual work outfits, she almost felt normal again. Almost. The aroma of breakfast greeted her before she reached the dining room. M

Clara sat frozen inside the closet. Her fingers tightened around the wooden rolling pin until her knuckles turned white. She had heard his voice. She knew that voice, but her body refused to move."Clara!"Matteo's voice echoed through the house again, louder this time."If you're inside, answer me."Her breathing hitched. For a brief second, she wondered if she was imagining it.The police sirens. The pounding on the front door. His voice. Everything felt unreal. She slowly unlocked her closet door and stepped into the bedroom. The shattered bedroom window allowed the cold night air to pour inside.Glass crunched beneath her slippers as she walked carefully downstairs, clutching Nyx against her chest. The front door was still locked. She looked through the security monitor.Matteo stood outside, his expression darker than she had ever seen it. Two police officers stood beside him. Behind them were members of Devereaux Franchise's security team. Her eyes stung. She hurriedly unlocked

Clara’s gaze held on Matteo for a fraction longer than she intended, but she quickly broke it before it could turn into anything meaningful. The question he had just asked still lingered in the space between them, sharp and deliberate.“What exactly happened last night?”She knew what he was doing.

For a brief second, Clara didn’t move. Her gaze stayed fixed on the woman seated comfortably across from Matteo’s desk, her posture relaxed as if she belonged there. Elena. Clara’s grip tightened slightly around her notebook before she forced herself to step fully into the office, closing the

Clara twisted her face, her brows met as she swerved into the next turn. Clara stayed frozen long after Matteo Devereaux walked out of her office. The door closed softly behind him, but the room still felt crowded, as if his presence had seeped into the walls and refused to leave. She stood beside her desk, one hand braced against the edge, the other hanging uselessly
