Alexander's POV

My office at the Reed Group was silent, illuminated only by the light from my computer and a desk lamp. It was almost eleven at night. I was sitting in my leather chair, my white shirt unbuttoned at the collar and my tie loose.

For some goddamn reason, the image of Sophia in that black dress the night I traded her for Victoria wouldn't leave my head.

I needed information. More information.

I got up and went to the door. I opened it carefully and peered into the dark hallway. Nothing. Total silence. Victoria must have been home already. I closed the door and locked it, turning the key until I heard the safe click.

I went back to the desk and picked up my phone. I dialed the detective's number.

He answered almost immediately. "Mr. Reed."

"Do you have any news?" I asked, skipping the greetings.

"Yes, sir. I'm still following Miss Morgan. Today she followed her usual routine: she went straight from work to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. She seems to make daily visits."

  • The Billionaire Replaced Me With My Assistant    Chapter 106

Richard Pierce's POVI was listening to everything. The bug I placed on Irina transmitted every sound from that distant office with such clarity that I could perfectly imagine the scene.I heard the sound of boxes being dragged, Sophia's ragged breathing, and then, the slap. A sharp, hard slap that echoed in my earpiece. At that moment, my hand, holding a glass of whiskey, paused mid-air. A smile of pure satisfaction spread across my face. Her anger was even greater than I had expected. Perfect. But what came next was even better. A heavy silence, and then the trembling voice of my golden goose, almost without strength, asking:"My grandmother?"That simple question, filled with shock and emotion, was the missing piece of my puzzle. I turned off the audio. The silence that followed was the best thing I had ever heard. I leaned back in my leather chair, my throne, from where I command everything."And now, Eleanor," I whispered, blowing smoke from my imported cigar, "it's only a matter

  • The Billionaire Replaced Me With My Assistant    Chapter 105

Sophia's POV I was standing face to face with Irina, and the height difference had never been so clear. She was taller and looked down at me with that demeanor that made you feel small. My face was hot with anger, and I could feel every heartbeat in my throat.Irina didn't blink. I tried to calm my breathing, but the anger inside me was a living thing, wanting to break free. And it did. My hand flew on its own, in a quick, blind movement. The slap hit her face with a dry crack that echoed in the empty office. Her head turned to the side from the force. And that's when I saw it. At the corner of her mouth, a smile. Small, quick, but it was there. As if she had enjoyed it. As if she had provoked it.Seeing that smile was the last straw. "TELL ME WHAT THIS MEANS RIGHT NOW, YOU BITCH!" I shouted, my voice hoarse.Irina stood still for a second. Slowly, she brought her hand to her cheek, which was already red and marked. A trickle of blood dripped from the corner of her lips. She looked a

  • The Billionaire Replaced Me With My Assistant    Chapter 104

Sophia's POV The next morning, I was back in my – now former – office, facing the strange task of packing up the life of the senior marketing manager who had settled within those four walls.I took a deep breath, looking at the empty boxes on the floor, the already half-bare desk. Every item I picked up to pack was a memory. The pen Irina gave me two months ago? Went straight into the trash. But the photo of Emma and me laughing... that one I wrapped carefully, as if I could protect it from the world. My head wouldn't stop. CEO. The word echoed, but now it sounded more like a threat than a promotion. The ringing of my cell phone cut through the heavy silence. The name "Michael" lit up the screen. A mix of relief and guilt tightened my chest."Michael," I said, trying to keep my voice light."Love. How's the... move going?"His voice was tired, the forced cordiality masking the tension from our argument and the financial catastrophe I still didn't fully grasp."Haven't really started

  • The Billionaire Replaced Me With My Assistant    Chapter 103

Sophia's POV The meeting room on the top floor of the Pierce Holdings building was icy and impersonal. The huge, shiny table reflected the light, almost blinding me as I sat down.Mark was already there. He seemed nervous but gave me a small, encouraging smile when he saw me."Sophia," he whispered, moving closer. "Are you nervous?""It's more than that," I replied, keeping my voice low too. I looked around. Several important shareholders were already present. People who controlled a lot of money and made decisions that affected many lives."Don't worry about me," Mark continued whispering. "I'll be fine. It was a pleasure working with you." His voice was sincere, and it almost broke my heart."This is temporary, Mark," I whispered back, feeling guilty. "As soon as I sort some things out in my life, I'm leaving this position. It wasn't what I expected."He shook his head, understanding, but his look said he doubted anything in that company was really temporary. That's when Irina Volk

Michael's POVAs I was thinking about yesterday's fight, I heard Sophia's footsteps coming down the stairs. She was dressed for work, in a dark blue dress that hugged her waist, the one I always liked. Her brown hair was tied in a bun, but a few loose strands fell over her face. She didn't look at me when she entered the kitchen."I'm going to stop by my apartment first," she said, her voice cold and flat. Her hands rummaged through her bag, looking for her keys. "Em asked me to bring a coat and some documents to the hospital. After that, I'm going straight to work."I slammed my cup down hard on the table. Coffee splashed out. "So you're really going to accept that position." My voice came out harsh. She finally looked at me. Her eyes were slightly puffy, clearly a sign she had cried during the night. "Michael, I don't want to talk about this. Not now."I stood up and crossed the kitchen, stopping between her and the door. Her soft perfume, of white flowers, reached me. It was the s

  • The Billionaire Replaced Me With My Assistant    Chapter 101

Alexander's POVThe cold glow of the video conference screen reflected on my face as the three men in Chicago fidgeted in their chairs.I knew each of them - Salvatore, Carmine, Vito. Men that traitor considered friends. Men I considered pawns."Gentlemen," my voice echoed in my Reed Group office, hands clasped over the ebony desk. "I'm in New York, you're in Chicago, but money... well, money always finds its way."Salvatore, with the expression lines that spoke of decades in business, spoke first. "Reed, Michael has already invested heavily in this project. Fifty percent of his capital is in it."My fingers drummed lightly on the desk. "And how much was that investment?"Carmine, the youngest, still with youthful arrogance, answered too quickly. "Ten million. And he deserves our loyalty after everything he's done for us."An almost imperceptible smile crossed my lips. "Ten million." I let the number hang in the air like a sentence. "I offer one hundred million."The silence was so pr
