The chill was the first thing I felt.

The sheets against my skin were cool, too clean, too crisp. I gasped and sat up, clutching at my chest. My heart raced so hard it hurt. My eyes searched the room.

This was not the hospital bed.

This was not where I died.

I glanced down at myself. My body—alive. No pain. No blood. No scars. I clenched my hands around my face. Hot, heavy tears pricked the corners of my eyes.

I exhaled, "No… this can't be real."

I looked around again. A dim light filtered through the closed curtains. Something bitter, perhaps liquor, and a hint of cologne filled the air. As though someone had been snoozing all night, the sheets were tangled. Then I became aware of it—the steady breathing next to me. I stiffened. I turned my head slowly. Nightangle Thane. With each deliberate breath, his broad shoulders rose and fell as he lay on his side.

His long lashes brushed against his skin, and his face was too serene. He was unaware. He was indifferent. Even now, he slept like the world couldn't touch him.

I covered my mouth with my palm to stop myself from crying. I had pleaded with him in a previous life for even a look or a word. Now, he was seated beside me, and my only emotion was fear. I pulled the blanket close to my chest and wrapped it around myself.

Someone knocked on the door. Blunt. Too direct.

"Nadira." The voice of my father. My chest constricted. I recalled this. I recalled everything. that evening. He burst through the door that night. He pulled the reporters in that night. That night, my life was imprisoned for all time. I crashed to the floor after falling off the bed. I didn't feel the force of my knees hitting the carpet.

I grabbed up my robe, which was draped over the chair, and tied it around me, my hands shaking.

"Father, wait—don't!" My voice cracked.

The door opened anyway. My father came in, his expensive suit impeccable, his tie pulled tight. He looked at me, then at the bed. His eyes gleamed, bright and cold.

"So, it's true." His voice was self-satisfied, almost pleased.

"Please…" I whispered. "Not this. Not again."

He raised his chin. "Do you have any idea how much it cost to set this up? Reporters are already waiting. Once they get a glimpse of you here, once they see him here, he won't be able to deny it. It will be finished."

My hands shook so hard I dug my nails into my palms. My breath came shallow.

"No, Father. I don't want this."

He laughed, short and bitter. "Do not be foolish, Nadira. This is your only chance. Thane Nightingale is the future. Do you want to remain nothing? Do you want to be discarded?"

I swallowed. My heart screamed yes. I had to be free. But in my past life, I had not been courageous enough to say it. I had let him push me, pull me, and tie me up. And in the end, I had lost everything.

Not this time.

"I'll do it myself," I said, my voice trembling but firm.

He frowned, his eyes narrowing. "What did you say?"

"I said I'll handle it. I don't need reporters. I don't need you humiliating me like that."

There was a pause. My father stared at me as if I had grown another head. Then he scorned.

"Do you think you can protect yourself? You are nothing without me. Don't forget who gave you this chance."

Something within me broke. "You never gave me a chance. You sold me."

His face twisted, a glint of anger, but he smoothed it out. He stepped closer, his voice lowering. "Be careful, Nadira. Don't test my patience."

The bed creaked behind us.

Thane's deep, raspy voice cut through the room, gritty with sleep.

"What's going on?"

My body stiffened. I turned slowly.

He was awake. His dark eyes were partially open, his eyebrows creased. He glanced around, then at my father, then at me. He looked down at the blanket that was still fastened around his waist. He asked, "What happened last night?"

My throat tightened as I opened my mouth. The words barely made it out. "We drank. Then I'm not sure."

He ran a hand through his hair and slowly sat up. He was too laid back. detached. As though he didn't care about any of this. He shot me a glare. "Then you'll marry me." I felt the words like ice. In my previous life, that sentence had made me cry with relief. I had held on to it, pleaded for it, and mistakenly believed it to be love when it was only obligation. Now, however. It now made me sick.

I forced myself to breathe. My father's face lit up, and he moved forward. "You see? He's agreeable. It's decided then—"

"No."

The word came out steady. Clear.

They both paused motionless.

I tightened my hold on the robe as I raised my chin. "I said no."

My dad's expression darkened. "Don't be dumb, Nadira—"

I raised my voice and said, "I don't want this."

The effort of suppressing my tears made my throat hurt.

"I refuse to do it. Not in this manner. The ensuing quiet weighed heavily on my chest. Thane's eyes met mine. His face remained the same for a moment. As though I had spoken in a language he had never heard, he simply stared. Then, slowly, his lips curved into something more slashing than a smile. "You deny me?" He spoke in a low, threatening voice.

I swallowed, but I didn't give up. "Indeed."

The atmosphere changed. My dad took a step back and looked between us, suddenly uncertain. Thane leaned forward, his elbows on his knees. His eyes had darkened, his jaw clenched.

"Fascinating," he murmured.

I wrapped my arms around myself. My heart was racing so hard I thought it might explode. However, beneath the fear was a strange sense of relief. I had said no for the first time.

Thane's eyes were sharp and unfathomable, and his head tilted sideways. "Nadira, exercise caution. You may come to regret saying that. I shuddered at the tone he used. Something I couldn't place burned in his eyes: anger, shock, maybe even interest. I realized then that this was only the beginning.

  • The Billionaire Second Chance Vow   The Lion’s Den

(Thane POV)I sat in the car across the street, knuckles tight on the steering wheel. Nadira had been walking for nearly forty minutes instead of taking the car. Forty minutes. My chest tightened, but it wasn’t anger at her—well, not entirely. It was frustration at myself.I watched her disappear into the narrow alley leading to that tech shop. That place. She shouldn’t even be there. Not for a second.I pulled my phone out, tracking her GPS. The little icon moved deeper into the district. My stomach churned. She wasn’t going home. She wasn’t going to school. She was going somewhere she shouldn’t.I remembered the conversation with my grandfather last night, sitting across from Archibald in the dining room.“You need to control her,” he had said, voice low but sharp. “If she doesn’t behave, the family fixers will take care of her.”I remembered the cold glint in his eye, the way he said take care. I had nodded like a perfect grandson, but inside, I’d been seething. I didn’t want her

  • The Billionaire Second Chance Vow   The Ghost in the Machine

I didn’t look back at the black sedan. I knew the driver was probably on his phone right now, reporting to Thane that I was walking away. Let him. My heels clicked against the pavement, a steady, rhythmic sound that felt like a countdown.Every block I put between myself and that car made the air feel a little easier to breathe. But the image of the text message—Thane, Magnolia, and that smug caption—was stuck in my head like a bruise. "Already forgotten," it had said. I gripped my bag tighter. If he wanted to forget me, fine. I would make sure he remembered the day I became his biggest headache instead. The neighborhood changed the further I walked. The shiny glass towers of the business district gave way to older, grimy brick buildings. Neon signs flickered with missing letters, and the smell of expensive coffee was replaced by the heavy scent of grease and old metal. This was the tech district, the place where things went to get fixed or disappear.I found the shop tucked betwe

  • The Billionaire Second Chance Vow   The Paper Shield

(Nadira POV)The apartment felt too quiet after Grandma V left. The kind of quiet that made every tick of the clock louder than it should be. I stared at the photo on the floor, the one with the red X slashed across it. My hands shook slightly as I picked it up again. It wasn’t just a warning anymore—it was proof that someone wanted me out of the game. That someone thought I was a threat.I hugged the photo to my chest for a moment, feeling the weight of it. In my first life, no one had cared enough to threaten me. I was invisible, weak, powerless. Now? Now, standing up for myself made me a target. That thought made my chest tighten.I grabbed a hollowed-out book from my shelf, slid the photo inside, and closed it quietly. Safe for now. I whispered to myself. Secrets were going to be my armor. If I was going to survive this second chance, I couldn’t let anyone see my weaknesses. Not even my father. Not even Thane.By the time I finished, the apartment felt too empty. I opened my lapt

  • The Billionaire Second Chance Vow   The Visit

(Nadira POV)I was exhausted, feeling as though I'd been dragged through the mud by the time I reached my apartment door. My head raced from being spoken to all day, and my chest hurt from yet another blowout with Thane. I just wanted to fall across my couch and sleep for a week.I opened the door and stood in shock. There was someone on my couch. Not anyone."Grandma V?" I blinked. My not so secret investor. She was lounging with crossed legs, having a cup of tea as if she were at home. She looked totally at ease, like it was the most normal thing to do in the world to break into my apartment."Took you long enough," she said, setting her cup down. "I was starting to worry you'd skipped out."I allowed my bag to crash to the floor and rushed over. "You—you can't just lie here like that! How did you even get in?"She shrugged. "Keys. Connections. Don't ask questions you don't want the answers to."I chuckled despite myself and hugged her hard. "It's nice to see you.""Of course it is

  • The Billionaire Second Chance Vow   The Breaking Edge

(Nadira POV)The car ride was silent except for the sound of the tires against the road. I sat with my arms folded, staring out the window.“You’re sulking again,” Thane said, his voice calm but edged with that usual firmness.“I’m not sulking. I just don’t like this arrangement,” I muttered.“You’re safer this way,” he replied without looking at me.I rolled my eyes. “I can take myself to school, you know. I’m not a child who needs escort duty every morning.”His hand tightened slightly on the wheel. “I already told you—until things settle, I’ll be the one dropping you off. The driver will pick you up after.”“I don’t want your driver either,” I snapped. He didn’t respond. That was Thane—once his mind was made up, there was no point arguing. Still, the silence between us felt heavier than usual. When the car stopped in front of the gates, I unbuckled quickly. “Thanks for the ride, boss,” I said dryly, pushing the door open before he could say anything else.I heard him call my name,

  • The Billionaire Second Chance Vow   Fault Lines

(Thane POV)Patience had never been my strong suit, and Nadira was testing me to it in ways no one else ever had. With each moment I shared watching her and Beckett laughing at his stupid jokes, it tore at me. I told myself it was because Beckett couldn't be trusted. That was true—he wasn't innocent. But the jealousy underlying it was eating me alive, and I hated that I couldn't admit it.I put the thought to rest when I walked into the meeting room at Nightingale Tech. My team was already there. The table was covered with papers, photos, and laptops that were showing files I'd been looking forward to reading for days. Marcus was the first one to stand up, holding out a folder. "Boss, we've checked. The tampering of Miss Evahart's brakes was not accidental."I sat at the head of the table, unfolding the folder. Black-and-white pictures showed the bottom of her car, the clean cut of the brake line."Continue," I said to him."It was a pro, not amateur," Marcus continued. "They weren't
