The rain had been falling for almost three hours, but Amelia Carter barely noticed it anymore.

After years of living in New York, she had learned that the city had a way of making people ignore things they couldn't change.

The endless traffic.

The crowded streets.

The cold wind that slipped beneath worn-out coats.

The rain that ruined shoes and soaked through cheap umbrellas.

Everyone was busy surviving.

And Amelia was no different.

She stood behind the counter of the small café on West 46th Street, forcing a smile as she handed a cup of coffee to a customer who looked like he had been waiting too long.

"Sorry about the wait," she said politely. "We're a little busy tonight."

The man barely looked at her.

"Finally."

He grabbed the coffee and walked away.

Amelia watched him leave before letting out a quiet breath.

Not everyone was kind.

She understood that.

People had their own problems. Their own bad days. Their own reasons for being impatient.

So she never took it personally.

That was something her mother taught her when she was young.

"Don't let someone else's bad behavior change the kind of person you are, Amelia."

Her mother's voice always came back to her at the moments she needed it most.

Amelia glanced at the clock hanging above the kitchen entrance.

11:37 p.m.

Her shift ended in twenty-three minutes.

Normally, she would have been happy.

Tonight, however, she wasn't looking forward to going home.

Not because she hated home.

Home was the only place where she felt safe.

But because every time she opened the door, she was reminded of everything she was trying to fix.

The unpaid hospital bills sitting on the kitchen table.

The medicine bottles lined up beside her mother's bed.

The worry hidden behind her younger brother's forced smiles.

Amelia could handle being tired.

She could handle missing meals.

She could handle wearing the same coat for three winters.

But watching the people she loved struggle?

That was the one thing she couldn't accept.

"Amelia."

She turned.

Her coworker, Lily, was standing beside the coffee machine.

"You look like you're about to fall asleep."

Amelia smiled.

"That obvious?"

"Very."

Lily crossed her arms.

"You worked the morning shift at the bookstore, right?"

"Yes."

"And now you're here."

"Yes."

"You need to sleep."

Amelia laughed softly.

"I'll sleep when I become rich."

Lily rolled her eyes.

"With how much you work, you should already be rich."

"If only exhaustion could be converted into money."

"Seriously, Amelia."

Lily gaveily lowered her voice.

"How is your mom doing?"

The smile on Amelia's face faded slightly.

"She's okay."

Lily gave her a look.

Amelia knew that look.

The one that said she wasn't fooled.

"Okay means?"

Amelia looked down at the counter.

"The surgery date is getting closer."

"And?"

"And we still need more money."

The words came out quietly.

Lily's expression softened.

She knew Amelia wasn't the type of person who asked for help.

Not even when she desperately needed it.

"I can lend you some."

Amelia immediately shook her head.

"No."

"Amelia—"

"No."

Her answer was gentle, but firm.

Lily sighed.

"You always do this."

"Do what?"

"Act like you have to carry the entire world alone."

Amelia didn't answer.

Because maybe Lily was right.

Maybe she did carry too much.

But what choice did she have?

Her father had been gone for eight years.

Her mother had become sick two years ago.

Her brother was still studying.

Someone had to be responsible.

And Amelia had decided a long time ago that person would be her.

"I'll figure it out," Amelia said.

Lily looked at her sadly.

"You always say that."

"Because I always do."

Before Lily could respond, the café door opened.

A group of customers entered, bringing cold air and rain with them.

Amelia immediately turned back to work.

There was no time to think.

No time to worry.

Not when bills were waiting.

___________________________________________________________________________________

At exactly midnight, Amelia removed her apron.

The café was finally quiet.

The last customer had left.

The chairs were placed upside down on the tables.

The smell of coffee still lingered in the air.

"See you tomorrow," Lily said as she grabbed her bag.

"See you."

"Text me when you get home."

"I will."

Lily hesitated.

"You promise?"

Amelia smiled.

"I promise."

After Lily left, Amelia counted the cash register with her manager.

Mr. Collins was a serious man who rarely smiled.

He had worked in the café for fifteen years and believed emotions had no place in business.

"Everything matches," he said.

Amelia nodded.

"Good."

She picked up her bag.

"See you tomorrow, Mr. Collins."

He didn't answer immediately.

That was unusual.

Amelia noticed.

She turned back.

"Is everything okay?"

Mr. Collins looked uncomfortable.

That alone worried her.

"What happened?"

He cleared his throat.

"Amelia..."

Her stomach tightened.

"Yes?"

He looked away.

"The café is making changes."

"What kind of changes?"

"We're reducing staff."

The words felt heavier than they should have.

Amelia stared at him.

"Reducing?"

Mr. Collins nodded slowly.

"We've been losing money for months."

A strange feeling settled in her chest.

"Are you saying..."

"I'm sorry."

The apology came before the words.

And Amelia already knew.

"No."

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"Mr. Collins..."

"I tried to prevent this."

"When?"

"Today."

She stood frozen.

"But I..."

She stopped.

There was no point.

Begging wouldn't change his decision.

Still, she couldn't stop herself from asking.

"Why me?"

Mr. Collins looked guilty.

"Because you're part-time."

Amelia laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because sometimes life became so unfair that laughing was easier than crying.

"Right."

She nodded.

"I understand."

"I'm sorry."

She forced herself to smile.

"It's okay."

It wasn't.

But she said it anyway.

Because that was what she always did.

She accepted things.

She survived.

She moved forward.

She picked up her final paycheck.

The envelope felt strangely light in her hand.

Three years of work.

Gone in one conversation.

Outside the café, the rain was still falling.

Amelia stepped onto the sidewalk and looked up at the dark sky.

For a moment, she allowed herself to feel tired.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

She had spent years pretending everything was fine.

But tonight...

Tonight she didn't know what to do.

Her phone buzzed.

She looked down.

Hospital Reminder.

Her heart sank.

Another reminder about payment.

Another number she couldn't reach.

She opened the message.

Dear Amelia Carter, this is a reminder that your mother's surgery deposit is due within seven days. Failure to complete payment may result in postponement.

Seven days.

She closed her eyes.

Seven days to find money she didn't have.

Seven days to save the person who had sacrificed everything for her.

She put the phone away and started walking.

The city lights blurred through the rain.

She didn't notice the expensive black car parked across the street.

She didn't notice the man sitting inside watching her.

And she definitely didn't know that the decision made by that man tonight would change her entire life.

___________________________________________________________________________________

Inside the black sedan, Alexander Kingston looked through the rain-covered window.

His assistant, Daniel, sat in the driver's seat.

"Are you sure about this?" Daniel asked.

Alexander didn't answer immediately.

His eyes remained on Amelia.

The woman walking alone through the rain.

The woman who had no idea how close she was to a dangerous secret.

"She's the one," Alexander finally said.

Daniel frowned.

"The woman from the garage?"

Alexander's expression remained cold.

"Yes."

"Sir, are you certain?"

Alexander looked away from the window.

"Find everything about Amelia Carter."

Daniel hesitated.

"Everything?"

"Everything."

A pause.

Then Alexander added quietly:

"Before someone else finds her first."
