Mag-log inCHAPTER 3:
The door handle moved. It moved slowly. It moved deliberately. My heart was beating hard; it felt like it was going to burst out of my chest.
For a moment I could not move. I could not breathe. I could not think. Then my body took over. I let go of the door. Stumbled backward. My eyes were fixed on the handle as it turned from the outside.
No. This could not be happening. He was not supposed to come. Not this fast. Not now. The door creaked open. Just a little. Enough for the cold night air to slip in. Enough for me to feel that shift in the atmosphere. Danger.
I felt danger. "Amara?" His voice was low. It was calm. It was too calm. My stomach dropped. He sounded controlled.. That was worse. Much worse. Because Kieran was not loud when he was truly angry. He was quiet. Deadly quiet.
My body reacted before my mind could catch up. I. Ran. Not toward the door.. Deeper into the house. My bare feet slapped softly against the floor as I rushed past the staircase. My breath was coming in bursts.
I had to think. Where could I go? The back door. The thought hit me like lightning. Kitchen. Back exit. I could still make it. I had to. Behind me the front door opened wider. Then it shut. The soft click echoed through the house. He was inside. Again.
"Amara, " he called. His voice drifted through the silence. "Why is the door open?" I did not answer. I could not. If I made a sound if he knew where I was it would be over. I reached the kitchen. My hands were shaking as I grabbed the edge of the counter to steady myself.
The back door was a few steps away. So close. I rushed toward it. My fingers were already reaching for the handle. "Going somewhere?" I froze. The voice was not behind me. It was beside me. My head snapped to the side.. There he was.
He was leaning casually against the kitchen doorway. Watching me. Waiting. My heart dropped into my stomach. How did he get there fast? For a moment neither of us moved. The air between us felt thick. Heavy. Like it was pressing down on my lungs.
"I..." My voice came out weak. Broken. "I was just—" "Running?" he finished for me. His lips curved into something that was not quite a smile. My throat closed. He pushed himself off the doorframe. Stepped into the kitchen slowly. Not rushing. Not angry. Just certain.
Like he already knew how this would end. "You were going to leave, " he said. His tone was almost thoughtful. "In the middle of the night." I shook my head quickly. Even though we both knew it was useless. "I wasn’t—" "Don’t lie." The words cut through me instantly. Sharp. Cold. Final.
Silence followed. I could hear my heartbeat. Loud. Wild. Terrified. "I just needed air " I tried again. My voice was above a whisper. His eyes darkened. "You needed air, " he repeated slowly. As if tasting the words. Then he took another step closer.. Another.
Until there was barely any space left between us. "You had your bag packed." My breath caught. I had not even realized he saw it. Of course he did. He always noticed everything. "I..." I started.. Nothing came out. Because there was nothing left to say.
The truth was already standing between us. Bare. Exposed. Ugly. "You were leaving me, " he said. Not a question. A statement. Something inside me trembled.. Something else refused to break this time. "Yes." The word slipped out before I could stop it. Soft.. Undeniable.
For a second I thought I imagined it. The way his expression changed. Not anger. Not immediately. Something else. Something darker. Hurt.. It twisted quickly into something far more dangerous. "You don’t get to leave me, " he said quietly. My heart pounded harder.
"I have to, " I whispered. My voice was shaking. "Kieran... I can’t stay here anymore." His jaw tightened. "And why is that?" he asked. His tone was suddenly sharp. I stared at him. Really looked at him. At the man I once thought I knew. The man I once loved.
For the first time I did not feel confused.. Guilty.. Unsure. I felt clear. "Because I’m scared of you." The words hung in the air. Heavy. Unavoidable. Something snapped. I saw it in his eyes. Felt it in the way the room seemed to shift around us.
"Scared of me?" he repeated. His voice was dangerously low. I nodded. My chest was tightening. "Yes." A bitter laugh escaped him. "You’re scared of the man who gave you everything?" "No, " I said. Surprising myself with how steady my voice sounded. "I’m scared of the man who thinks that gives him the right to hurt me."
Silence. Thick. Tense. Explosive. For a moment I thought maybe he would hear me. Maybe something would change.. Then he stepped closer. Too close. His hand shot out gripping my arm. Hard. Pain shot through me.. I did not cry out. Not this time.
"You don’t get to twist things, " he said. His voice was rising slightly. "You don’t get to turn me into the villain." "I’m not turning you into anything, " I said. My heart was racing. "You’re doing that yourself." The second the words left my mouth I knew I had pushed far.
His grip tightened. Dangerously. "You think you’re brave now?" he asked. His eyes were burning into mine. "No, " I whispered. "I think I’m done." That did it. Whatever line he had been holding onto it snapped. Completely.
In one motion he pulled me toward him. My body collided with his. The force knocked the air out of my lungs. "You’re not done until I say you’re done " he growled. Panic surged through me. This was it. This was where it got worse. Much worse.
My eyes darted around desperately. Think. The counter. The knife. Too far. The door. Blocked. My heart was racing faster. My breathing was uneven as fear clawed its way up my throat. "Kieran... Please " I said. My voice was breaking despite my effort to stay calm.
"Please what?" he snapped. "Please let you walk out like none of this matters?" "It matters!" I cried. ". I matter too!" The words hit something. I saw it. I felt it. A flicker of hesitation. Just enough. Long enough.
I acted. With all the strength I had left I shoved him. Hard. He stumbled back a step. Just one.. It was enough. I. Ran. This time I did not hesitate. Did not think. Did not look back.
I grabbed the back door handle. Yanked it open. I ran out into the night. Cold air hit my face. Freedom. Real. Terrifying. Freedom. I did not stop. Did not slow down. I ran across the dark yard. My feet were slipping slightly against the ground. My breath was coming in bursts.
Behind me "AMARA!" His voice exploded into the night. Rage. Pure rage. My heart nearly stopped.. I kept running. Faster. Harder. I reached the gate. My hands were shaking as I fumbled with the latch. Come on. Come on! It stuck. Of course it did.
Panic surged again. My vision was blurring as I struggled with it. Behind me the sound of the door slamming open echoed loudly. He was coming. Closer. Faster. I could hear his footsteps now. Heavy. Relentless. "Stop running!" he shouted. I yanked the gate harder. It finally gave way.
I stumbled out onto the street. Nearly falling as my foot hit the pavement.
I caught myself doing that.
I just kept moving
There were lights
Cars were passing by.
People were around me.
I was thinking about safety.
I just needed to get enough away from everything.
I told myself to go a little further.
Then I saw headlights.
They suddenly blinded me.
A car came speeding toward me out of nowhere.
It was going fast.
It was too close to me.
I froze in place.
My body would not move because fear had taken over.
Every muscle in my body was locked in place because o
f fear.
The sound of the car brakes screeching filled the air.
Then everything went dark.
CHAPTER 23: I held the list in my hand.I did not let it go.Ethan and Kieran had stopped arguing. The room was quiet again.Everything had settled in.I still held the list. This was not about survival. The list was a hunt.I was done being the target.I said something finally.I broke the silence."They are not just names, " I said.Ethan leaned against the table. His arms were crossed."I know " he said.Kieran was near the window. He was watching the outside. He thought danger might walk in at any moment."They are pressure points " he said.I looked at him."Yes " I said.I turned the screen so they could see."These are the ones who are already moving " I said."They are the dangerous " I said.Ethan said something."And the most exposed " he said.I said "Exactly."There was silence. Then Kieran asked a question."Who " he said.He was straight to the point.Always.I looked at the list.I looked carefully.I looked for patterns.I looked for connections.I looked for weakness
CHAPTER 22: The world did not come to an end.It changed. That was even worse.I spent three days in that room.Three days of silence and recovery. Watching everything fall apart. Not just Blackwood, everything.I sat in the hospital bed with a tablet in my hands. The screen was filled with headlines. There were explosions of truth everywhere.Governments were denying everything.Companies were collapsing.Powerful people were being exposed.I scrolled through the news slowly.I was taking it all in.I was feeling it.This was what I had started.Ethan's voice brought me back."What are you looking at?" he asked.I looked up at him.He was standing by the door with his arms crossed. He was watching me carefully."Consequences " I said.He came closer."You should not be reading all that yet " he said."I need to understand what I did, " I replied. His jaw tightened a little."You exposed criminals, " he said."I messed up systems " I corrected him."Systems that needed to be broken,
CHAPTER 21: Everything felt far away.Muted.The world was like it was wrapped in silence.Pain still found me.At first it was faint. Then it got sharper. It pulled me back. Made me feel things. It made me breathe and exist.I took a breath in and it filled my lungs. It was unsteady and heavy. My fingers moved a little. Then I heard voices. They were. Familiar.Ethan said "She is losing a lot of blood."His voice was tight and controlled. I could tell he was about to lose it.Kieran said "We need to move "His voice was low and urgent.Ethan said "No she will not survive the transfer."Kieran said "We do not have a choice."There was silence for a moment. Then Ethan said "Move her."His voice was careful and decisive. My body was. Pain flared up right away.I let out a gasp.Ethan said "She is awake."My eyelids. Everything was blurry.I saw shapes and light and movement.Ethan said "Hey, stay with me."I tried to focus on his voice.I tried to hold on to it.I said "Did it work?"H
CHAPTER 20: The moment I hit enter everything changed. The screens started moving fast.Lines of code were scrolling down quickly.Systems were unlocking.Barriers were falling.Blackwood was exposed for the first time.Alarms were ringing louder than before. They were not in control anymore. The man in black shouted "Stop her".It was too late.I was moving fast my fingers were flying across the console.I knew what I was doing. One of the guards said "This is impossible".I said "No it's inevitable".Ethan was standing behind me watching my back.He called out to Kieran.Kieran said he was handling the guards.I didn't turn around. I heard the fight. It was fast and brutal.Kieran was not holding back anymore. That was good because I was not holding back either.Ethan asked me how long I needed.I said a minute. He said it was not time.I said it had to be enough. My eyes were scanning the system.Everything was open now.I could see all the names, accounts and secrets. My chest fe
CHAPTER 19: Everything was dark. For a moment there was no movement. No sound. I just heard that voice. It was cold and certain. It was waiting.Someone said, "Well done, Amara."My heart was pounding against my chest. The man in black was there. He was watching or maybe both.Ethan whispered to me "Stay close." His hand found mine in the dark. It was firm and grounding.. My mind was already racing. Something did not add up.This place was supposed to be hidden and untouched. Kieran said it was off-grid. So how did they find us?Then the voice said, "Lights,". They came back on. They were dim and red. We did not control them. The system belonged to them now. There were figures stepping out from the shadows. They were armed and silent. They surrounded us and my pulse spiked. The man in black said, "Drop anything you're holding." He was calm and composed like he had already won.Ethan tensed beside me. Kieran did not move. He did not speak. He did not react.. That was when I felt it. T
CHAPTER 18:I wasn’t running.I stood between them, Ethan on one side, Kieran on the other, and instead of feeling torn…I felt clear.Focused.In control.“I need a place, " I said. Both of them looked at me.“Somewhere off their grid " I continued. "No cameras. No tracking. No Blackwood reach.”Ethan nodded.“I know a place.”Kieran shook his head a bit.“Then it’s already compromised.”Ethan’s jaw got tight.“It’s not.”“It always is, " Kieran said calmly.I raised my hand.“Enough.”They both stopped talking.“We don’t have time for this, " I said. "Blackwood already knows I escaped. They’ll move fast.”“They already are, " Kieran added. My eyes snapped to him.“What do you mean?”“They’ll lock down every known contact you have " he said. "Including him.”He looked at Ethan.“. Anyone you might run to.”My chest got tight.“So nowhere is safe?”“No " Kieran said. ". Some places are… less dangerous.”That wasn’t comforting. It was honest.“Then we find one " I said.Ethan hesitated.
CHAPTER 6: The moment Kieran stepped into the room the air changed. It wasn’t just that I felt nervous. It was like the walls were closing in on me.My fingers curled into the hospital sheet.I didn’t know why I was scared.I didn’t know him.My body did. That scared me more than anything.“Amara
CHAPTER 5: Beeping was the thing I heard. It was soft and steady like a reminder that I was still here still alive. The second thing I felt was pain. It was not sharp like before. It was dull and heavy. It was everywhere. My body felt like it did not belong to me like I had borrowed it from someon
CHAPTER 4: Darkness didn’t come all once. It slowly swallowed me. Piece by piece. The sound of tires still echoed in my ears. My body felt weightless. I felt like I was floating away from the pain and fear. For a moment there was nothing. No Kieran. No house. No running. Just silence. Then I heard
CHAPTER 2: The door swung open suddenly. The sound was loud. It echoed inside me.For a moment everything seemed to slow down. The lock on the door was hanging from the doorframe. There were splinters of wood over the floor. The cold air from the hallway came in. It felt like a warning against my
