Chapter 7

Penulis: Peachy
The auction started.

I clutched my bidding paddle tightly. I stared dead at the stage. I waited for Lot 47.

Finally, the auctioneer held up the sapphire necklace.

"Lot 47. A stunning vintage sapphire. We'll start the bidding at half a million."

I instantly raised my paddle. "Five hundred thousand."

"One million," Chloe's voice rang out from beside me.

I turned to look at her. Chloe smiled and held her paddle high.

"One point five million," I countered. My voice was tight.

"Two million," Chloe said without hesitation.

The price started skyrocketing.

Three million. Five million. Eight million...

My palms were sweating. My agent said my assets were worth fifteen million. But the bidding was nearing twenty million.

"Twenty million." Chloe casually raised her paddle. Like she just called out a trivial number.

The auctioneer looked at me. "Miss, do you wish to continue?"

My hands were shaking. I couldn't lift the paddle anymore.

I was out of money.

The entire room's eyes were on me. Including Victor's.

I swallowed my pride. I turned to look at him.

"Victor, lend me some money," my voice shook. "Please. That's my mother's necklace. It's the only thing she left me."

Victor looked at me. A complex, hard-to-read emotion flashed in his eyes. He reached for his black card...

Chloe turned to him too. Her voice was sweet and whiny. "Victor, I've never owned anything nice in my entire life. This is the first time I've loved a piece of jewelry this much. Can you make Serena let me have this one?"

She tugged on his sleeve. She widened her pitiful eyes.

Victor's gaze shifted between me and Chloe.

Those few seconds felt like a century.

"Let Chloe have it," Victor finally spoke. His voice was terrifyingly calm.

My world collapsed.

"Twenty million going once!" the auctioneer's loud voice rang out.

"Twenty million going twice!"

I wanted to scream. I wanted to beg Victor again. But the words stuck in my throat. Choked to death by the betrayal.

"Twenty million, sold!"

The gavel dropped. My heart died completely.

Chloe clapped her hands in excitement. She turned to me. "Serena, thank you!"

She didn't even try to hide the smugness on her face.

After the auction, Victor went to get Chloe's meds. She suddenly claimed she had a headache.

I sat alone on the plush sofa in the VIP lounge. I watched the staff pack up the remaining items.

Ten minutes later, Chloe came backstage. She walked up to me.

I stood up to face her.

"Chloe, I'll trade you for the necklace. Anything."

"Like what?" Chloe arched one perfectly groomed eyebrow.

"I have a limited-edition Ferrari. Some couture accessories. It's not worth twenty million. But give me some time, I'll pay you the rest..." I tried to keep my voice steady. "Just give the necklace back."

Chloe shook her head. "I don't need those."

"Then what do you want?"

Chloe pretended to think. A cruel smile spread across her face. "Get on your knees. Apologize to me. Then beg for it."

"What did you say?"

Vicious light danced in Chloe's eyes. "You were so mean to me before. Now it's your turn to beg."

I glared at her. My hands balled into tight fists at my sides.

But thinking of my mother's necklace. My last connection to her. I slowly, painfully, began to bend my knees.

"Good girl. But before that, let me show you where the necklace is right now." Chloe smiled smugly. She pulled out her phone.

She opened a video. She shoved it in my face.

On the screen, Chloe's expensive newly bought purebred poodle was lying on a velvet cushion.

Hanging around its neck, like a literal dog collar, was the sparkling sapphire necklace.

My mother's necklace.

"See that? Even my dog wears vintage couture," Chloe smiled sweetly. "I think it's a perfect match."

My blood instantly ran cold.

"What did you say?"

"Your mother was a cheap gold-digger. This necklace belongs on a bitch. Don't you think?" Chloe put her phone away. Her smile unwavering.

"Which hand did you use to put it on the dog?" My voice dropped to a whisper. So quiet even I could barely hear it.

"My right hand. Why?" Chloe was still smiling. Drunk on her victory.

The next second, the string of sanity in my brain snapped completely.

I swung my arm back. I slapped Chloe's smug face with everything I had.

"Ah!" Chloe shrieked. She lost her balance. She stumbled backward. She slammed hard into the antique glass display behind her.

The expensive glass shattered.

Sharp shards rained down. They slashed her dress. They stabbed into her arm.

Blood spurted out. Chloe let out a blood-curdling scream of agony.

I even occasionally gave Victor faint smiles.Victor was wary at first, but gradually, he started to believe I had accepted my fate."What do you want to eat today?" he asked one morning, adjusting his tie by the bed.I leaned against the headboard, my long hair cascading over my shoulders. My voice was very calm. "I'll eat whatever you make."Victor's fingers paused.A flash of surprise crossed his eyes, soon melting into a smile."Okay."He turned and walked toward the kitchen. It was the most relaxed his posture had been in weeks. The moment he left, I threw off the covers.By playing obedient these past few days, I had not only stolen a micro-terminal from the study but also swiped a keycard to the bottom-floor wine cellar.Using a top-tier backdoor access I learned while I was by his side, I hacked into the island's security system. An encrypted distress c

Serena’s POVVictor had to return to New York to deal with a corporate warfare crisis triggered by Julian's sniper attack on his business. On the third day he was gone, I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the island villa, watching the last sliver of the sunset fade.A maid quietly walked in. "Madam, please have some milk."I didn't move. "When is he coming back?""Mr. Victor said that once he finishes his business, he'll immediately—""Smash!"The crystal glass shattered against the wall. "I'm not your 'Madam'," I sneered. "Get out."The terrified maid scrambled out of the room. I bent down and picked up the sharpest shard of glass.——Victor's POVMeanwhile, at the Sterling Group headquarters in New York, Victor sat at the head of the conference table, his thumb unconsciously rubbing his phone. The screen displayed a security feed: Serena standing on the beach, staring at the horizon. From the back, she looked so frail that a sea breeze could shatter her."Boss? Regarding thi

Serena’s POVVictor forcefully took me to a private island in the Bahamas in the Caribbean Sea. He used his air traffic control connections to lock down the entire island's airspace. The seawater here was so blue it was heartbreaking. White beaches stretched as far as the eye could see.But no matter how beautiful the scenery was, it couldn't hide the cruel truth—I was a prisoner. When the plane landed on this private island Victor had bought long ago, I realized he had already cut off all external communication signals on the island. No internet. No phones. Even the radio was jammed."Welcome to your new home, Angel." Victor stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the cliffside villa, his voice carrying a sick sense of satisfaction.I looked at him with a cold smile. "The mighty CEO of a tech empire reduced to using tactics like this to imprison a woman. You're pathetic.""Pathetic?" Victor turned around, eyes burning with a paranoid fire. "Even if I have to lock you away where no

Serena’s POVThe day before the wedding, I sat at the vanity in the bridal suite, my fingertips gently brushing over the diamonds on my wedding dress. The sun was shining brightly. Outside, the staff were bustling about, setting up the ceremony.Everything looked so perfect.A soft knock came from the door."Serena?" Julian walked in, holding a cup of warm Ceylon tea and a delicate little velvet box.He was wearing a tailored black suit. His eyes were incredibly gentle."You barely ate anything for breakfast," he said, placing the cup next to my hand.I looked up, a soft smile on my lips. "Are you lecturing me now, Julian?""I wouldn't dare." He leaned down and handed me the box. "I'm just afraid you'll get hungry."I opened the box. Inside were exquisite Italian handmade chocolates."I heard you used to love the chocolates from this shop," Julian said softly. "I had them flown in from Milan."I paused, a little surprised. Just as I was about to speak, the estate's security alarm sudde

Serena’s POV"The Hayes Group and the New York tech circle have always stayed out of each other's way. What is Victor Sterling doing here?"The guests started whispering. The low murmurs spread across the ballroom. All eyes zeroed in on the tall figure at the door."Why is he staring at Ms. Serena like that? Don't tell me he's here to crash the wedding."Almost instantly, Julian pulled me into his arms, using his body to shield me. But I was surprisingly calm.I looked at Victor and smiled. "Mr. Sterling, what brings you here? Dropping off a wedding gift?"My words were like a knife stabbing deep into Victor's chest. His jaw clenched. The veins on his neck popped. His voice was incredibly hoarse. "Serena, come back with me."My smile widened. "Come back for what? To watch you take care of Chloe?""I don't love Chloe!" Victor's roar echoed through the ballroom. The music abruptly stopped. The crowd froze. "I love you."The guests gasped. Whispers erupted immediately."He really is here

Serena’s POVI let out an exasperated laugh."Then why were you hiding? You didn't show your face for a week, but you kept sending gifts. What kind of plan is this? Trying to buy Wall Street for me?"Julian's ears turned even redder. He mumbled, "...I hadn't picked out the perfect gift yet."Me: "..."I took a deep breath and asked the most important question. "You said you've had a crush on me for a long time... Have we met?"Julian's eyes flickered, and he finally looked straight into my eyes. "Serena, do you really not remember?""Ten years ago, at a yacht party in Malibu...""Did you forget who you saved?"I froze. My memories were pulled back ten years. At that party, I was standing on the deck when I heard a splash.A little boy had fallen into the water. Before anyone else could react, I jumped in after him.The seawater was freezing, but I swam desperately toward the struggling figure. After swallowing a few mouthfuls of seawater, I finally dragged him back onto the deck."Are
