WHEN THE STORM HITS

James sat down in his sleek, and very spacious office where you could see all the buildings of the city through his window. He typed away on his keyboard, finalizing a deal with one of their many investors. His office was somewhere he had always felt carefree and calm, devoid of any personal crisis.

The soft hum of the television place in the very end of the room was not much of a distraction to James. The daily updates of the world's problem had always been background noise to him but not today. The anchor's voice broke him out of his concentration.

“Breaking News: Was the Knight and Chen wedding a hoax? We're believed to assume the joining of the Knight and Chen children in matrimony had been a strategy to merge both companies together because of financial issues. Anonymous sources provide comprehensive information on this but it won't be shared to the public for now. So really, do you think this union is a hoax?”

James' body stilled, his hands hovering above the keyboard. The picture of him and Emily in their wedding attire flashed across the screen with bold letters captioned “HOAX??”

He reached for the remote, turned up the volume while putting on his suit jacket. The anchor continued. “Insiders claim that the Chen family have been going through financial struggles for a while now. Could this abrupt union be about saving themselves or about true love?”

“Hey James, do you mind helping me with this client?” Brad walked into his office as James brushed past him.

“Sorry Brad, maybe some other time. There's something really important I must attend to.” He snatched his phone from his desk, called his driver.

“Bring the car around now.” He didn't even wait for the response. He ended the call, heading out to the parking lot.

“Well, that just happened….” Brad looked at the door James just went through with so much confusion written on his face before he finally turned to the television playing in the background.

“Oh no…”

**********

The drive back to the house gave James time to think. He knew this mess wasn't Emily's fault and her father was the one that proposed the idea of merging companies through marriage because of their struggles but that did not mean they deserved whatever it is that was coming to them. it currently painted Emily as the enemy and he was not going to stand back and watch her suffer everything alone.

When he entered the house, he noticed Emily standing by the window with folded hands, he could see the faint signs that she had been crying and his heart broke for her.

“You saw it.” It wasn't a question, it was more like he was telling himself, his voice more quiet than he intended.

“Of course I saw it.” She said sharply, her hand reaching out to wipe the remaining tears from her eyes. “My father won't stop calling, it's everywhere.”

James paused, taking a few steps closer to her. “We can fix this.”

Emily turned to him, eye watering yet again and anger at the top of her voice. “Fix it? How do we do that James?! The story's out already!! Everyone knows the truth.”

“You think they're stupid? You think they can't tell the difference between real and fake?! When you can't even look me in the eye half the fucking time.”

“Don't say that, that's not fair.” James frowned, clenching his hand.

“Fair? You're talking about fair?” She pointed at him. “You shut me out whenever you feel we're opening up to each other….or when we're close to trusting ourselves. And now you want me to stand beside you as the perfect wife while the world laughs at us?”

“It's not our fault, Emily. There's only one thing left to do. He walked to her and stood in front of her.

Emily threw her head back in laughter but it was dry. “So you're saying we keep on faking it? I can't believe this ”

“No, I'm not saying that. No more faking. We give them something real.”

“What are you trying to say?” Emily asked as she played the words over again in her head.

“We give them no room to question our marriage, we make them change their minds.”

Emily finally understood what he was suggesting. “Are you saying….we kiss, publicly?”

“Precisely. That's the only way to fix this once and for all.” He said all in one breath. “That's only if you're comfortable with it.”

Emily looked at him, the mere thought his lips touching hers drove her mad, she couldn't help but agree with him. It was outrageous for her but it could work. And what choice does she have anyway?

“Alright, let's do it.”

**********

The following day, they arrived at a fundraiser. Which was carefully picked out because of the number of people that would be attending. The place was so big it made Emily dizzy. She sat in the car with James as they looked out, Emily carefully counted the number of reporters and cameras that appeared to be covering the event.

“Are you ready?” With a nod of head and one final breath.

“Let's do this.”

Eyes from every corner immediately turned as they both stepped down from the car. Emily's palms were so sweaty but James grabbed hold of it regardless. Emily wondered if he was doing this for the cameras or if it was genuine. She could never tell what was going on in that big head of his, James was a puzzle that she had no idea how to solve.

Emily felt James intertwined their hands and a wave of emotions hit her, almost knocking her off her balance that she was barely maintaining. “Stop the jitters. We've got this.”

Emily smiles, but it was more of a grimace. How was James able to keep his cool through all this? She couldn't stop the feeling that this wasn't going to end well.

James led both of them through the large doors. Chatters from guests surrounded them and Emily felt like she was drowning. As they moved through the crowd, James found the perfect spot, stopping there, he turned her around and whispered into her ear. “Ready to do this?”

Emily couldn't form any words but she nodded, giving James the go ahead. It was like something out of a movie scene. The music stopped, all eyes glued to the couple. James leaned in and captured Emily's lips in a soft kiss.

The kiss started off slowly. Everything stopped for Emily and she could hear her heart thumping against her chest, James deepened the kiss, his hand softly caressing every inch in her body. It made her weak. Her initial nervousness vanished immediately as she leaned into the kiss, responding by putting her hands around his neck. Deepening the kiss more.

The sound of clapping pulled Emily from the trance that was James's lips. Her cheeks so flushed she was sure the person standing 4 feet from them could notice it.

“That should do it.” James said but his hand lingered far too long on Emily's waist than she wanted.

As the night continued, Emily found herself replaying the kiss more than a hundred times in her head. She knew perfectly that this was supposed to be for show. So why did it make her feel the opposite way?

THE TURNING POINT In a poorly lit room, Royce sat in the dark with a whiskey in hand. He had just been set free from the authorities. The television in front of him was the only source of lighting in the room. It played the whole scandal between him and the Knight-Chen family. He wasn't paying attention to the news. There was something else that bothered him, and he had no say in the matter whatsoever. “You're late.” He said as the door to the room suddenly opened. “I'm sorry. Traffic was bad.” The man behind the door said. Royce waved him off as if it was nothing. “He sent me.” The figure replied. “Said you wanted me to do something.” “Yes. The Knights think they can threaten me and get away with it.” Royce said with gritted teeth. He dropped his glass of whiskey on the table. “I want you to show them I'm not one to mess with.” Royce said with an ominous look in his eyes. “Consider it done.” The man said with a nod, sharing the same ominous look with Royce. He left the

THE RECKONING The sound of heavy footsteps made him sit up until the owner walked into the office. He was still in his work clothes. He had turned this whole weekly meetup into a routine. The other man was already getting tired of it. Besides, he was scared of his own safety, too. But who was he to go against his boss? For what it's worth, nobody would ever believe they were brothers. As long as his boss was concerned, he was just an object he could use anytime he wanted. “Do I have to do it?” He asked, looking down at his shoes. What he was asking from him was very dangerous. He'd be putting himself in trouble. Everything he'd ever worked for would be on the line. “I wasn't asking.” The other man answered in his deep and smooth voice. Chills went down the man's spine. Why did his brother always do this? This wasn't how brothers treated each other. Even he knows that. But his brother had always put him in the receiving end of bad things. He always made him take responsibility for

THE CONFRONTATION The door burst open, and he walked in like he owned the place. The usual fake persona vanishing instantly. Replaced with who he actually was. What he actually was.“What are you doing here?” The man asked , shocked to see the other man. He wasn't supposed to be here. At least not by this time. “Is that any way to talk to your boss?” The other man asked calmly. The weight of his voice sent shivers down the first man's spine. He kept his head low. He dared not to look him in the eye. If he didn't want a fist to his face, that is. “No, sir.” He answered. He tried so hard to make sure his voice didn't waver. His boss hated it. The man took a seat. He stared out the window with a cold expression. His hand on his jaw, he seemed to be thinking. The other man always wondered why his boss was so ruthless, but he dared not to say anything about it. “Is everything set?” The man asked again. He knew what he was referring to. That was probably why he had to come by himself

COUNTER ATTACK They were still at the office. The atmosphere was tense. James held onto the tablet tightly to the point that his knuckles were turning white. Emily and Isaiah shared worried glances towards him. Cassie stood in front of the entrance to ensure no one interrupted them. Brad cleared his throat, finally breaking the silence. “James.” He paused. Seeing that they weren't the only ones in the room. “Sir, we need to do something about this. It's possible we'd keep on losing partners if we sit back.” He said.James sighed. He facepalmed. “You're right. We can't sit back and watch this time.” This whole thing was making him really stressed. “Brad and Cassie, I want you two to take care of the partnerships. Reassure the clients that we have everything under control.” The two of them nodded their heads and left the office. “Isaiah.” He looked up from the documents he was reading. “I want you on damage control. Make sure that whatever is happening isn't affecting us.” “You got

SHADOWS IN THE OFFICE The tension in the office was palpable. Every employee worked effortlessly and tirelessly on their parts. They didn't speak about what was happening in the office, but they knew what was happening. James walked into the conference room that morning, and even the receptionist looked drained. It got to her, too? He saw Isaiah and the rest sitting in their various seats. Emily sat next to him. A bunch of files were arranged neatly in front of him, despite everything happening in the office, he looked to be the one who was still well put together. James doubted if anything could disorganise him. Since Tokyo, things have been weird between them. And it so happens that this problem started after Isaiah went back to New York. They've been trying to manage most of their clients while him and Emily worked on damage control of the office.“You're here quite early.” James said as he dropped into the chair beside Emily. It had become a habit, staying close to her whenev

NEW YORK The sound of them landing broke Emily from her light sleep. She turned to see James still working on his phone. He didn't seem to get enough sleep these days. “We're finally back.” Emily said with a smile as he saw the familiar airport through the window. Don't get her wrong.Travelling to six different countries in the span of a month is a dream come true for anybody, but she missed the familiarity of her home. The whole trip had been a roller coaster for Emily. With the deals and everything that happened afterwards. The partnerships were fairly easy to secure, but there was one that made even James lose his footing. You guessed right. The Yakuzi's. Emily was right when she assumed the daughter was the one with the power in the family. She spoke so fiercely and authoritatively. Her parents just stood there like supporting Characters while she went on about what they were offering and receiving. It was really tricky trying to win them over, but Emily stepped with a ne

THE NEXT DEALFor the next five hours. Emily, James, and the others prepared for the deal in Tokyo. Emily had a feeling that it would be their hardest yet. And she prayed to all that was holy that it didn't go that way.Leaving Paris made Emily feel a sense of bittersweetness. She knew that they were initially there for business, but the things that happened after securing the deal was what made her emotional about leaving. Her and James's relationship was stronger than ever. They were married, but it felt like they just started something real.Something even better and stronger than the marriage. She knew they'd face different challenges along the line because this wasn't just about business anymore. It was about their future together. The future they were trying to build. Packing their things wasn't an issue. The airport wasn't even as crowded as she expected, so boarding their plane was hassle free. “You're all packed?” James asked. Coming to stand next to her as their luggage

PARISIAN TRUCE (PART 2)Emily instinctively reached out to hold the railings. James also put his hands out to steady her. She almost fell off the Eiffel Tower. Why would James say something like that when they were over twenty feet from the ground?“I'm sorry.” James said with concern. “I didn't mean to scare you. That wasn't my intention.” Emily put a hand on her chest, trying to steady her breath. She held onto the railings, supporting her while she avoided James's eyes.“No, it's alright.” She said, finally looking at him. “I was just shocked, that's all.” He looked at her. He wanted to know every little about how. How she could light up the room with just one smile. What her favourite colour was. Every little thing. His pulse quickened. He didn't want to jeopardise any progress he had managed to make, but he couldn't control himself any longer. He wanted Emily, and he wanted her now.“You know what?” He started. “Forget abou–” he turned to leave. “Do you mean it?” Emily said

PARISIAN TRUCEThey secured the deal. It was definitely more challenging than London but the partnership was finally sealed. Everything concerning business has been dealt with. They had three days left in Paris and Emily worried about being alone with James for those days. The next morning, the people in Paris are either morning people or they don't sleep. The streets are filled with people from different places. Different cafés preparing for the hordes of people, tourists walking around with cameras hung over their shoulders. James walked into the room from the bathroom, his hair was still wet from showering. He saw Emily working on something on her phone but he didn't want to disturb her. Things with Emily had him on edge, he was to blame after all he was the one who got drunk and made a dumb mistake. Thinking about everything that led to that horrible day made him uncomfortable again. The phone call. He planned on telling her about the phone call soon but in the meantime, he'd
