The sound of the clock was louder than usual, Emily Chen sat very uncomfortably at the edge of her father’s chair in his study. He had called her immediately after he came back from a business meeting and she wondered what he wanted with her. She watched the beautiful night sky from his window but she couldn't stop her mind from running wild with possible scenarios. Her father's sharp and firm broke her out of her thinking. “Emily, you need to understand. This is not a suggestion. It is the only way.” She looked at him from the corner of her eyes, her heart in a knot of anger and confusion. This was the man who raised her to believe she had equal rights and protection, who had also taught her that family should come over everything. But this? This felt like the biggest betrayal ever. “You're telling me….you've made arrangements for me to marry James Knight?” Her voice was barely a whisper. He nodded firmly, “The Knights are the only ones with enough power to save us from this. They agreed to a business merger but only under one condition, that it is sealed by a marriage.” Emily's chest tightened, how could this have happened? The Knights were her family’s greatest rivals in everything ranging from real estate to stock market. And James freaking Knight? That man was known for his reputation of being ruthless and icy cold towards everyone other than his family. And he was the last person on Emily's lists of potential husband's. “What makes you think that this is even a good idea? What if they're tricking you into doing it for their own gain?” She said, sharper than she intended. “Because,” her father replied, giving her a cautious look as his voice hardened, “if you don't do this, everything we've worked for ... everything your grandfather has built will come crumbling down. We have enemies from different corners coming after us Emily, James is the only way we can keep them apart.” She felt her defensiveness wavering, the pressure of keeping her family’s legacy weighing on her. She remembered how her grandfather had told her stories of how he built the company from scratch. Was she really going to stand back and watch it fall to the ground when she could do something about it? She quickly recollected herself, hoping that her father would somehow change his mind and see this as unreasonable. “And James agreed to this willingly? Without question?” Her father paused, his expression hard to read. “Yes he did, but he's as reluctant as you are now. But his family has convinced him to see value in this alliance, as much as we do.” A knife could cut through the silence. She kept weighing everything her father had told her in her mind, this was not an easy decision for anyone to make. She knew what her father was asking and she knew what she was meant to do. A sacrifice she had to make, one she never expected. A sacrifice that would strip her from every right she thought she had up until now. “But… I..I don't even know him.” She said quietly, her father could barely hear her, it was almost as if she was talking to herself. Her father stood up, walking to her, showing her a gentle side of him that she had never seen. “You'll get to know him, Emily, if that is what you want. But this must be done, for us. For your family.” Of course he'd do this, she expected it but she wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. Her father would always find a way to guilt trip her into something she didn't want to do, all in the name of family. Looking at all this now, she had no choice in the matter, her father had already decided what needed to be done and that is what she must do, follow his words. Emily could have never imagined something like this would happen to her, sure she was the only child but that didn't mean her parents could do this to her. They had always been in charge of making decisions for her but this was them crossing a line. With one final breath, Emily nodded, the decision piercing a knife through her chest. “Fine.” She said, almost a whisper. “But do not expect me to act all loving towards him, this is a business arrangement and we will treat it as nothing less than that.” She said with so much venom but it was not directed to her father. He put his hands on her shoulder and nodded, as a show of acceptance to her terms. “Nobody expects you to act that way, Emily. Just do what needs to be done.” As she walked back to her room, leaving her father's study. Her mind raced with a series of unanswered questions, doubts, and a sense of dread that she could already taste. She had never met James Knight but all the stories she heard about him did nothing good to his reputation. She wondered how she could tolerate someone like that for a considerable amount of time. James Knight had always been a name she heard but now it won't just be a name anymore. Soon, it would be the name of her husband. And if this marriage was meant to strengthen her family’s legacy and keep them away from financial ruin, she was going to do everything in her power to see it through. She wouldn't let anyone see her as something they can just use and toss away any longer. Getting her family out of this was her main priority and she won't let anything sidetrack her from doing what she was meant to do. But she made one promise before entering her room. If this was the only thing to do, she would be damned if she does protect her fragile heart in the process, at all cost.THE TURNING POINT In a poorly lit room, Royce sat in the dark with a whiskey in hand. He had just been set free from the authorities. The television in front of him was the only source of lighting in the room. It played the whole scandal between him and the Knight-Chen family. He wasn't paying attention to the news. There was something else that bothered him, and he had no say in the matter whatsoever. “You're late.” He said as the door to the room suddenly opened. “I'm sorry. Traffic was bad.” The man behind the door said. Royce waved him off as if it was nothing. “He sent me.” The figure replied. “Said you wanted me to do something.” “Yes. The Knights think they can threaten me and get away with it.” Royce said with gritted teeth. He dropped his glass of whiskey on the table. “I want you to show them I'm not one to mess with.” Royce said with an ominous look in his eyes. “Consider it done.” The man said with a nod, sharing the same ominous look with Royce. He left the
THE RECKONING The sound of heavy footsteps made him sit up until the owner walked into the office. He was still in his work clothes. He had turned this whole weekly meetup into a routine. The other man was already getting tired of it. Besides, he was scared of his own safety, too. But who was he to go against his boss? For what it's worth, nobody would ever believe they were brothers. As long as his boss was concerned, he was just an object he could use anytime he wanted. “Do I have to do it?” He asked, looking down at his shoes. What he was asking from him was very dangerous. He'd be putting himself in trouble. Everything he'd ever worked for would be on the line. “I wasn't asking.” The other man answered in his deep and smooth voice. Chills went down the man's spine. Why did his brother always do this? This wasn't how brothers treated each other. Even he knows that. But his brother had always put him in the receiving end of bad things. He always made him take responsibility for
THE CONFRONTATION The door burst open, and he walked in like he owned the place. The usual fake persona vanishing instantly. Replaced with who he actually was. What he actually was.“What are you doing here?” The man asked , shocked to see the other man. He wasn't supposed to be here. At least not by this time. “Is that any way to talk to your boss?” The other man asked calmly. The weight of his voice sent shivers down the first man's spine. He kept his head low. He dared not to look him in the eye. If he didn't want a fist to his face, that is. “No, sir.” He answered. He tried so hard to make sure his voice didn't waver. His boss hated it. The man took a seat. He stared out the window with a cold expression. His hand on his jaw, he seemed to be thinking. The other man always wondered why his boss was so ruthless, but he dared not to say anything about it. “Is everything set?” The man asked again. He knew what he was referring to. That was probably why he had to come by himself
COUNTER ATTACK They were still at the office. The atmosphere was tense. James held onto the tablet tightly to the point that his knuckles were turning white. Emily and Isaiah shared worried glances towards him. Cassie stood in front of the entrance to ensure no one interrupted them. Brad cleared his throat, finally breaking the silence. “James.” He paused. Seeing that they weren't the only ones in the room. “Sir, we need to do something about this. It's possible we'd keep on losing partners if we sit back.” He said.James sighed. He facepalmed. “You're right. We can't sit back and watch this time.” This whole thing was making him really stressed. “Brad and Cassie, I want you two to take care of the partnerships. Reassure the clients that we have everything under control.” The two of them nodded their heads and left the office. “Isaiah.” He looked up from the documents he was reading. “I want you on damage control. Make sure that whatever is happening isn't affecting us.” “You got
SHADOWS IN THE OFFICE The tension in the office was palpable. Every employee worked effortlessly and tirelessly on their parts. They didn't speak about what was happening in the office, but they knew what was happening. James walked into the conference room that morning, and even the receptionist looked drained. It got to her, too? He saw Isaiah and the rest sitting in their various seats. Emily sat next to him. A bunch of files were arranged neatly in front of him, despite everything happening in the office, he looked to be the one who was still well put together. James doubted if anything could disorganise him. Since Tokyo, things have been weird between them. And it so happens that this problem started after Isaiah went back to New York. They've been trying to manage most of their clients while him and Emily worked on damage control of the office.“You're here quite early.” James said as he dropped into the chair beside Emily. It had become a habit, staying close to her whenev
NEW YORK The sound of them landing broke Emily from her light sleep. She turned to see James still working on his phone. He didn't seem to get enough sleep these days. “We're finally back.” Emily said with a smile as he saw the familiar airport through the window. Don't get her wrong.Travelling to six different countries in the span of a month is a dream come true for anybody, but she missed the familiarity of her home. The whole trip had been a roller coaster for Emily. With the deals and everything that happened afterwards. The partnerships were fairly easy to secure, but there was one that made even James lose his footing. You guessed right. The Yakuzi's. Emily was right when she assumed the daughter was the one with the power in the family. She spoke so fiercely and authoritatively. Her parents just stood there like supporting Characters while she went on about what they were offering and receiving. It was really tricky trying to win them over, but Emily stepped with a ne
