SHADOWS OF THE PAST

Emily's heart sounded in her chest as she looked down at the picture of Evans Royce, she had searched for a long time on the Internet before she got his picture. His sharp eyes stared back at her, she had an unsettling feeling about this man, his name alone sent chills down her spine but she couldn't fathom why. She knew that his involvement with the Knights was deeper than James was letting on.

James stretched from his chair, reaching out to grab the phone on the table and stared at the picture intensely. “If Evans Royce is involved in this, then this isn't about some petty grudge, he doesn't seem like someone that will do something like this because of a slight grudge. This is something bigger.”

Curiosity piqued Emily. “You said before ‘I remember him’ and now it feels like you're speaking from past experience, you're not telling me everything James. What did your father do to him?”

James loosened his tie and sighed . “A couple years ago, my father funded Evans company. He promised that he'd offer him full term financial support but after reviewing some documentation my father pulled out abruptly. His company went bankrupt, he lost his reputation and apparently his family too.”

Emily gasped, covering her mouth in surprise. “So you're saying this might be revenge? A vendetta against your family? Well it's my family now too I guess.”

James nodded looking grim. “That might be the case right now. But if he's messaging us directly, then this isn't just about business anymore, it's personal.” He continued. “And I don't think he's going to stop at just sending messages, if he's back after all this time, then he definitely has a plan and I don't think this will be easy.”

Emily straightened herself, and with determination. “Then let's not give him what he wants, let's not show that his plays affects us. Let's stick to our roles and give him the opposite of what he's expecting.”

James looked at Emily and something unfamiliar flickered in him, he had never expected her to react this way. He was getting impressed by her each time they spend together. “Alright, if we're going to do this, we need to do it right. I'll make some calls, get more information on him. You need to know one thing Emily, Evans is ruthless and he would stop at nothing to see us crumble.”

Her expression did not waver. “Good, because I have nothing else to lose.”

**********

The room fell quiet for a moment, the conversation they just had settling in both their heads, before Emily finally broke the silence.

“James.” She said slowly, “do you think we're missing something else? Something your father didn't tell you?”

James looked up at the ceiling. “There's definitely something else, Emily, my father has so many enemies, Royce seems to be the only person that had come this far in fighting back, but this feels different, I can't quite put my hand on it. It just feels like there's something bigger to it.”

Emily's mind turned, putting puzzle pieces together. “Did he ever threaten your family? After everything that happened, I mean.”

James shook his head, wrinkling his nose. “Not really, after the bankruptcy, he just disappeared, for so long, there was no trace of him. It was like he vanished from the earth completely.”

Emily pursed her lips. “So we're dealing with an invisible person, who's been watching us now, that's just great.”

James leaned forward with a serious expression. “Emily, we need to stick together, no doing things on your own, this has just become extremely serious.”

“Oh I know, you're not getting rid of me that quickly Mr. Knight.”

James chuckled softly but there was a flicker of admiration in his eyes.

**********

The next day, Emily sat on her bed, thinking about the conversation she had with James the previous night. She picked up her phone to call Cassandra, despite what James had told her about involving anybody else, she just wanted to hear a friendly voice.

“Em!” Cassandra's joy filled voice came from the other end. Emily smiled softly.

“How's life as a married woman?”

Emily hesitated, she didn't want to lie to her but she didn't want to reveal anything that she isn't sure of, putting Cassandra in danger.

“It's um.. going well, a little complicated. Hey Cassie, do you remember seeing anyone strange at the wedding? Someone out of place?”

Cassandra's tone changed into a serious one. “Now that you've brought it up, yes I did see someone like that, I thought he was a friend of James's but Brad didn't seem to know him. Is everything alright?”

Emily shifted on the bed. “Did you happen to get a name?”

“No.” Cassandra answered, sounding worried now. “Are you sure everything's alright Em?”

Emily smiled despite her chest tightening. “Everything's alright, nothing to worry about. Thanks Cassie.”

Hanging up, Emily was definitely convinced now that Royce was responsible for everything happening. But the question that she couldn't get out of her mind was: what was his endgame?

That evening, James returned from the office, he still had things to do but Emily was still required to stay home because of the “honeymoon stage” very ridiculous if you asked her. They sat down at the edge of Emily's bed, going through documents on Royce's background and anything tangible they could find on the Internet.

A knock came from the door and James answered. one of the staff handed him something, this time, it wasn't a mysterious box, it was a white envelope.

James collected it, dismissing the messenge with a nod. Tearing it open, there was one single paper inside with the same handwriting from the last note.

“You're so close, but you're still playing catch. Do you really think you can out-think me? Stop now or the next secret I reveal won't just destroy your so called marriage but it'll destroy both your families.”

-A friend.

Emily clenched her fist. “If he's so cocky, why doesn't he sign it with his name? He's playing with us, he wants us to slip up, make mistakes.”

James nodded, agreeing to what she said. “Then we won't give him that satisfaction, like you said, we give him opposite of what he's expecting. He won't know what hit him.”

THE TURNING POINT In a poorly lit room, Royce sat in the dark with a whiskey in hand. He had just been set free from the authorities. The television in front of him was the only source of lighting in the room. It played the whole scandal between him and the Knight-Chen family. He wasn't paying attention to the news. There was something else that bothered him, and he had no say in the matter whatsoever. “You're late.” He said as the door to the room suddenly opened. “I'm sorry. Traffic was bad.” The man behind the door said. Royce waved him off as if it was nothing. “He sent me.” The figure replied. “Said you wanted me to do something.” “Yes. The Knights think they can threaten me and get away with it.” Royce said with gritted teeth. He dropped his glass of whiskey on the table. “I want you to show them I'm not one to mess with.” Royce said with an ominous look in his eyes. “Consider it done.” The man said with a nod, sharing the same ominous look with Royce. He left the

THE RECKONING The sound of heavy footsteps made him sit up until the owner walked into the office. He was still in his work clothes. He had turned this whole weekly meetup into a routine. The other man was already getting tired of it. Besides, he was scared of his own safety, too. But who was he to go against his boss? For what it's worth, nobody would ever believe they were brothers. As long as his boss was concerned, he was just an object he could use anytime he wanted. “Do I have to do it?” He asked, looking down at his shoes. What he was asking from him was very dangerous. He'd be putting himself in trouble. Everything he'd ever worked for would be on the line. “I wasn't asking.” The other man answered in his deep and smooth voice. Chills went down the man's spine. Why did his brother always do this? This wasn't how brothers treated each other. Even he knows that. But his brother had always put him in the receiving end of bad things. He always made him take responsibility for

THE CONFRONTATION The door burst open, and he walked in like he owned the place. The usual fake persona vanishing instantly. Replaced with who he actually was. What he actually was.“What are you doing here?” The man asked , shocked to see the other man. He wasn't supposed to be here. At least not by this time. “Is that any way to talk to your boss?” The other man asked calmly. The weight of his voice sent shivers down the first man's spine. He kept his head low. He dared not to look him in the eye. If he didn't want a fist to his face, that is. “No, sir.” He answered. He tried so hard to make sure his voice didn't waver. His boss hated it. The man took a seat. He stared out the window with a cold expression. His hand on his jaw, he seemed to be thinking. The other man always wondered why his boss was so ruthless, but he dared not to say anything about it. “Is everything set?” The man asked again. He knew what he was referring to. That was probably why he had to come by himself

COUNTER ATTACK They were still at the office. The atmosphere was tense. James held onto the tablet tightly to the point that his knuckles were turning white. Emily and Isaiah shared worried glances towards him. Cassie stood in front of the entrance to ensure no one interrupted them. Brad cleared his throat, finally breaking the silence. “James.” He paused. Seeing that they weren't the only ones in the room. “Sir, we need to do something about this. It's possible we'd keep on losing partners if we sit back.” He said.James sighed. He facepalmed. “You're right. We can't sit back and watch this time.” This whole thing was making him really stressed. “Brad and Cassie, I want you two to take care of the partnerships. Reassure the clients that we have everything under control.” The two of them nodded their heads and left the office. “Isaiah.” He looked up from the documents he was reading. “I want you on damage control. Make sure that whatever is happening isn't affecting us.” “You got

SHADOWS IN THE OFFICE The tension in the office was palpable. Every employee worked effortlessly and tirelessly on their parts. They didn't speak about what was happening in the office, but they knew what was happening. James walked into the conference room that morning, and even the receptionist looked drained. It got to her, too? He saw Isaiah and the rest sitting in their various seats. Emily sat next to him. A bunch of files were arranged neatly in front of him, despite everything happening in the office, he looked to be the one who was still well put together. James doubted if anything could disorganise him. Since Tokyo, things have been weird between them. And it so happens that this problem started after Isaiah went back to New York. They've been trying to manage most of their clients while him and Emily worked on damage control of the office.“You're here quite early.” James said as he dropped into the chair beside Emily. It had become a habit, staying close to her whenev

NEW YORK The sound of them landing broke Emily from her light sleep. She turned to see James still working on his phone. He didn't seem to get enough sleep these days. “We're finally back.” Emily said with a smile as he saw the familiar airport through the window. Don't get her wrong.Travelling to six different countries in the span of a month is a dream come true for anybody, but she missed the familiarity of her home. The whole trip had been a roller coaster for Emily. With the deals and everything that happened afterwards. The partnerships were fairly easy to secure, but there was one that made even James lose his footing. You guessed right. The Yakuzi's. Emily was right when she assumed the daughter was the one with the power in the family. She spoke so fiercely and authoritatively. Her parents just stood there like supporting Characters while she went on about what they were offering and receiving. It was really tricky trying to win them over, but Emily stepped with a ne

THE NEXT DEALFor the next five hours. Emily, James, and the others prepared for the deal in Tokyo. Emily had a feeling that it would be their hardest yet. And she prayed to all that was holy that it didn't go that way.Leaving Paris made Emily feel a sense of bittersweetness. She knew that they were initially there for business, but the things that happened after securing the deal was what made her emotional about leaving. Her and James's relationship was stronger than ever. They were married, but it felt like they just started something real.Something even better and stronger than the marriage. She knew they'd face different challenges along the line because this wasn't just about business anymore. It was about their future together. The future they were trying to build. Packing their things wasn't an issue. The airport wasn't even as crowded as she expected, so boarding their plane was hassle free. “You're all packed?” James asked. Coming to stand next to her as their luggage

PARISIAN TRUCE (PART 2)Emily instinctively reached out to hold the railings. James also put his hands out to steady her. She almost fell off the Eiffel Tower. Why would James say something like that when they were over twenty feet from the ground?“I'm sorry.” James said with concern. “I didn't mean to scare you. That wasn't my intention.” Emily put a hand on her chest, trying to steady her breath. She held onto the railings, supporting her while she avoided James's eyes.“No, it's alright.” She said, finally looking at him. “I was just shocked, that's all.” He looked at her. He wanted to know every little about how. How she could light up the room with just one smile. What her favourite colour was. Every little thing. His pulse quickened. He didn't want to jeopardise any progress he had managed to make, but he couldn't control himself any longer. He wanted Emily, and he wanted her now.“You know what?” He started. “Forget abou–” he turned to leave. “Do you mean it?” Emily said

PARISIAN TRUCEThey secured the deal. It was definitely more challenging than London but the partnership was finally sealed. Everything concerning business has been dealt with. They had three days left in Paris and Emily worried about being alone with James for those days. The next morning, the people in Paris are either morning people or they don't sleep. The streets are filled with people from different places. Different cafés preparing for the hordes of people, tourists walking around with cameras hung over their shoulders. James walked into the room from the bathroom, his hair was still wet from showering. He saw Emily working on something on her phone but he didn't want to disturb her. Things with Emily had him on edge, he was to blame after all he was the one who got drunk and made a dumb mistake. Thinking about everything that led to that horrible day made him uncomfortable again. The phone call. He planned on telling her about the phone call soon but in the meantime, he'd
