What the old woman did shocked everyone!

Martin immediately tried to stop his mother.

“Mama, don’t do this! Have pity on Elizabeth!” he cried.

“Pity, you say?!” Mery snapped harshly. “This woman is useless! She’s truly stupid and uneducated. I told you not to marry her, but you insisted. Look at her now—she can’t even take care of one child. My grandchild died because of her!”

Mery burst into loud sobs, pulling Elizabeth’s hair even harder.

But Elizabeth remained silent, frozen like stone. Her eyes were empty, fixed only on the small body of her lifeless son.

“My real daughter-in-law should have been Julia! She is a great woman—smart, intelligent, educated, with a good career. Not like you, a parasite! You can’t even care for a child!” Mery kept raging as she struck Elizabeth.

Elizabeth still didn’t react. Even if the woman killed her right there, she was willing to die with a smile, as long as she could be with Alex.

“Mother, please! Have some compassion. Can’t you feel sorry for Elizabeth? She just lost her child!” Martin pleaded.

A neighbor who was watching stepped in, trying to stop Mery’s hand from pulling Elizabeth’s hair. The woman tried to advise her, but ended up being shouted at as well.

“Compassion? Are you blind? Don’t you see my grandchild died because of her?!” Mery barked viciously. “I will report my grandchild’s death to the police. This woman must go to prison!”

The threat made the neighbor retreat in fear.

“Mama, calm down…” A soft voice was heard. Julia, the woman Mery always praised, finally spoke to soothe her.

Meanwhile, Martin’s older brother and sister just stood by, silently watching, as if Elizabeth truly deserved such treatment.

Not long after, Elizabeth’s body swayed, and darkness once again enveloped her. She fainted, shocking everyone.

---

Elizabeth slept for quite a while. She only awoke when the sound of commotion reached her from the living room. With a weak body, she leapt from the bed and rushed outside.

“Don’t touch my child!” she shouted, snatching Alex from Martin’s arms.

“My love, I only want to take care of our son’s remains…” Martin said, tears falling.

“I will take care of him myself.” Elizabeth clutched her son tightly.

Martin fell silent. His heart shattered with regret. If only he hadn’t been careless when trying to reach his phone number…

But Mery’s voice rang out again, loud and sharp. “Hey, stupid woman! You have no right to stop his father from preparing his child’s body!”

Harshly, she tried to pull the baby from Elizabeth’s embrace. But Elizabeth resisted. She hugged her son even tighter, even pushing her mother-in-law so hard that Mery staggered backward. Luckily, Martin quickly supported his mother’s heavy frame so she wouldn’t fall.

Slap! Slap! Slap!

Three hard slaps landed on Elizabeth’s cheeks. Her lips split, blood dripping, yet she stayed silent.

“Shameless! How dare you fight back?! Know this—I never accepted you as my daughter-in-law. You’re not on the same level as our family!” Mery shouted for all to hear.

Elizabeth looked at her with tear-filled red eyes. “This is my child! I gave birth to him. I was the one with him day and night!”

“You gave birth to him? Don’t forget who paid for your hospital costs!” Mery sneered. “Martin only had five million rupiah (about 330 USD). The rest—twenty-five million rupiah (about 1,650 USD)—I paid! Until now Martin still owes me. Do you have any money to pay for your delivery?”

Her words pierced mercilessly. Was Mery truly human, or had she no heart at all?

Martin stayed silent, unable to defend his wife.

“My love, please… don’t be sad. You have to be strong.” Julia held Martin’s hand, as if she were the one most deeply hurt. People’s eyes turned toward them, but Julia didn’t care.

The neighbors began to grow furious. One of them even pulled Mery back when she tried to attack Elizabeth again.

“Don’t you feel any pity? Even in front of your grandchild’s body, you dare to hit the mother?”

But Mery retorted cruelly. “A woman like her deserves to be beaten! Nothing can be expected from such a fool! If a child has a high fever, just look up the solution on the internet!”

Even Martin’s sister joined in mocking Elizabeth.

Elizabeth remained silent. She chose to take Alex to the bathroom. Even though her head throbbed painfully and her body felt weak, she didn’t care.

Carefully, she bathed her son’s small body. Every detail of Alex’s face—his eyes, nose, lips, and cheeks—she caressed gently, as if she wanted to keep his little face forever in her memory.

Martin only stood at the doorway, watching his wife in silence.

When she was finished, Elizabeth kissed her son again and again. “Thank you for being part of my life. Forgive me, Alex… I can no longer hold you. Please… take me with you. I can’t endure this any longer…”

Her sobs broke loose. Her chest tightened, her heart felt as though it were being split apart. She tried to deny the sting of Mery’s slaps and hair-pulling earlier, but this pain was all too real. Which meant this was no dream.

With her own trembling hands, Elizabeth wrapped Alex’s tiny body in his favorite towel. Then, with steadfastness, she prepared her son’s remains to be buried according to custom and faith.

At that moment, her breast milk began to leak again. She took the breast pump, expressed it, and stored it in special bags inside the refrigerator. Her milk supply was abundant—each pumping session produced around 750 milliliters.

“My child… I have so much milk. I will donate it to the hospital, so that you may have many little siblings out there.” Elizabeth wept as she looked at the milk bags.

Elizabeth’s grief moved many to tears. Yet they forgot… the Creator must have already prepared something far greater for her life—something none of them could ever imagine.

Mawar smiled softly as she looked at her only son.“Why did you take so long?” she asked.“The traffic was terrible, Mom,” Nathan replied as he sat beside her.“I went to the nursery earlier. The nurse said the woman who donated her milk for my baby is here,” Nathan said, glancing around the room. But he didn’t see the woman in question.“Yes, Nathan. We’ve already met the woman who donated her milk for your child,” Mawar replied, turning her gaze toward Elizabeth.“Where is she, Mom?” Nathan asked, his eyes widening slightly. The anxiety that had filled his chest slowly eased. If the milk donor truly existed, then he wouldn’t have to go through the trouble of finding another one.“There she is. Her name is Elizabeth.” Mawar pointed toward the young woman standing not far from them.Nathan froze. His eyes locked onto Elizabeth, blinking several times as if trying to confirm that what he was seeing was real.“Mom’s going to hire Elizabeth as both the babysitter and the milk donor for m

“Where was your husband at that time?” Mawar asked, gazing at Elizabeth.“My husband rarely came home, Ma’am. He often went out of town, so it was just me and my baby at home. I tried putting on a cold compress to lower his fever, but nothing changed. I even tried calling my husband, hoping he’d pick up, but he never answered.”Elizabeth’s body trembled as she spoke about her husband. The wound in her heart, still unhealed, throbbed painfully—like salt rubbed into an open cut. Julia’s words about that man sleeping at her apartment echoed again in her mind.In a soft voice, Elizabeth began to explain the events leading to her baby’s death. She tried hard to hold back her tears, but her voice broke halfway through the story.Dr. John remained silent. For some reason, every time he heard about a child’s death, a deep ache spread through his chest.“You must stay strong. Alex is in heaven now. He’ll be waiting for you there,” Mawar said gently, trying to comfort her.“Yes, Ma’am…” Elizabe

Dr. John glanced at his ringing phone. The moment he saw the caller’s name, he immediately answered.“Hello,” he replied curtly.“Hello, Dr. John. I’d like to ask, is it true that Miss Elizabeth is with you?” a polite voice came from the other end — one of his nurses.“Yes. Why do you ask?” Dr. John stood up from his seat, stepping slightly away from Elizabeth.“How did you know she’s with me?” His tone turned cold, clearly angry.“I’m sorry, Doctor… I saw it on the CCTV,” the nurse stammered, sensing the tension in her superior’s voice.“How dare you! You’ve been watching me through the surveillance cameras?” His voice rose, trying to suppress his irritation.“Please don’t be angry or misunderstand, Doctor. Madam Mawar wants to meet Miss Elizabeth. Since we didn’t know where she was, she asked me to check the CCTV. When I looked, it turned out Miss Elizabeth was with you. We also tried to contact her, but her phone was off,” the nurse explained quickly, trying to calm the situation.

Although fear still lingered inside her, Elizabeth forced herself to turn around to see who had called her name. If that man happened to be Martin’s brother-in-law, at least she still had a chance to run away. But that fear vanished instantly when her eyes met a familiar figure — someone who had always treated her with kindness.“Doctor John…” Elizabeth said softly, an unconscious smile forming on her lips as the man in the white coat walked closer.“How are you? Didn’t I tell you to come back for a check-up in four or five days? Why didn’t you come?” Doctor John asked in a half-scolding tone.“I’m sorry, Doctor,” Elizabeth replied briefly. She didn’t know what excuse would sound appropriate.“How’s your leg?” he asked again, crouching down in front of her.Elizabeth panicked. “W–What are you doing, Doctor?” she asked, trying to pull her leg away as he gently held it.“I’m checking your wound,” he said calmly while removing her flip-flops. After making sure the wound was completely he

Elizabeth remained silent, listening to the story told by the girl in a white uniform.“The last time I saw him, his body wasn’t like this yet. And his face—he wasn’t this handsome,” Elizabeth said, smiling as she praised the tiny baby now gripping her index finger tightly.“Well, of course he’s handsome! His daddy is unbelievably good-looking! Sharp nose, rosy lips—definitely not like a smoker’s. His eyes are brown, his hair’s a bit light brown too. He’s just perfect. Tall, strong, like one of those Western actors we always see in Hollywood movies,” said the nurse excitedly, as if she could see Nathan’s face in her imagination. The man had indeed become the nurses’ favorite at the hospital. Especially during the past three weeks, when Nathan had come every single day to visit his baby.Elizabeth simply smiled and nodded without responding.“But, ma’am… what happened to your lips?” the nurse asked, noticing the dry wound at the corner of her mouth.“I fell,” Elizabeth replied softly w

Elizabeth sat quietly on the chair in front of the recovery room. She didn’t know who was inside, and honestly, she didn’t care.In a hospital this large, no one really paid attention to her.It was the kind of place where people came and went freely, without anyone asking too many questions. For Elizabeth, the hospital felt like the safest place to stay temporarily—while she hoped that someday she might find a steady job.Still, a faint unease lingered in her chest. She knew visiting hours had long ended, and every time she heard the footsteps of a security guard, her heart pounded with fear that someone might question her presence. Her eyelids grew heavy.Without moving much, she leaned her head against the chair’s backrest. Within minutes, sleep crept over her fatigue. But just as she drifted off, she startled awake again.A restless feeling kept her from truly relaxing. She was afraid someone might steal the few belongings she still had in her bag. While trying to calm herself, El
