Prologue
"Hi Loise!" Carla greeted me. I smiled at her and greeted her too. Of all the employees here, she's the only one who's nice to me. The other women here can only see me with very high eyebrows. I didn't do something wrong, but I guess no matter how good you are people will always have something to say about you.
I just continued my walk to my cubicle. I need money more, than asking them about their problem about me. I don't have an energy to have a confrontation with them, If they're mad at me so be it. As long as I knew myself I didn't do something wrong to them.
I was so oblivious of my work that I didn't know It was already morning, my shift was only until 6am. After fixing my things I already left the building. I walked 5 minutes to get on the jeep. I remember the first time I commuted, I don’t know how. I don't even know what happened. I almost got lost because the jeep I rode was wrong but thankfully someone helped me so I was able to go home. Desperate to survive in this world, I learned to observed my surroundings and the people around me and learned to adjust.
Fortunately, I got on board right away, I haven't filled up yet because it's too early. Seeing the corner with us I quickly went up and down. I first bought a bread at the bakery on the corner before walking home. After years of living in this kind of place, I have also become accustomed to the quiet of the whole place.
I smiled after seeing the cute little girl outside hugging her teddy bear while definitely waiting for someone. She's still wearing her pajamas and her hair is still messy, obviously she just woke up but is already outside the door. She's yawning and still sleepy. Her face lit up when she saw me walking towards her. She instantly ran towards me.
Aw my cute little happy pill.
Just seeing her face makes me happy. She makes me relax.
"Good morning baby ..." I kissed her forehead. She's hugging my knees and looking at me. Her eyes always reminds me of him. She definitely had all his facial features. Unfair how she only got my fair skin. Nevertheless I still love this beautiful gift I ever had.
"Good morning mommy ..." She was still sleepy so I picked her up and kissed her on the cheek. She leaned her fat cheek on my shoulder. She's facing my neck.
"How was your sleep? Did you miss mommy?" I asked her. I sat in the chair in the living room and hugged him. She put her little arms around my neck and embraced me tighter. I smiled of her small gestures. I brushed her hair with my fingers while gently rubbing her back.
"I dreamed about daddy ..." She said softly which stopped me. "I never mentioned him to her but I guess there's something that we can't control. I never mentioned him because I knew we're better without him. And Lauren never ask me, but I knew deep inside she also wants to meet his Dad. But I just can't, I knew what he's capable of. He'll move heaven and earth and be the evil itself.
Chapter 41.1The next morning, I woke up to something wet and sticky brushing against my cheek.I frowned and opened my eyes, only to shut them again when the brightness stung. When I opened them once more, a smile immediately curved on my lips as I caught sight of the small figure leaning over me. Her damp lips touched my cheek again, making my smile widen."Good morning, Mommy!" she greeted cheerfully.I was fully awake now and saw Lauren smiling at me. Her hair was a mess and she was still wearing her pajamas. It was clear she had just woken up and came straight to me.I yawned and sat up in bed. I opened my arms, and she immediately threw herself into a tight hug."Good morning, baby," I greeted back, kissing the top of her head.It had been three days since she got sick—and also three days since I last saw Wyatt. I'm thankful he hasn't shown up again.Lauren hadn’t mentioned or asked anything about him either, which made me a bit anxious. I wasn’t sure what she was thinking or wh
Chapter 40.2I was pulled back to the present from my own reverie when I heard Wyatt speak.I blinked a few times and saw Wyatt smirk at me, but his eyes said otherwise. He looked lost and gloomy. But I quickly pushed those thoughts away—there’s no way he felt that! He made his choice, so now he has to take the consequences.“What are you doing here, Tito?” Aecil asked Wyatt curiously. Wyatt smiled slightly at her, glanced at me first, then responded to Aecil.“I’m visiting a princess, Aecil,” he said with a smile.“Woah! Really?” Aecil asked excitedly.“Yeah.”I cleared my throat, which caught both of their attention. I was startled by their sudden gaze, but I quickly composed myself.“We have to go, Aecil,” I said. I squatted in front of Lauren and was about to carry her when Wyatt suddenly appeared at my side.“Let me,” he said softly. His tone was gentle, almost pleading—but I ignored it. Just like earlier, I brushed his hand away again.“We don’t need your help. I can take care o
Chapter 40.1"Are you okay, hm?"Lauren and I both turned to Wyatt when he suddenly spoke. I saw Lauren’s brow furrow in confusion. She blinked several times while looking at Wyatt, who, in contrast, barely blinked as he stared back at her.Lauren slowly turned to me, her eyes filled with questions. I swallowed hard, and my hands instantly turned cold. I clenched my fists tightly and took a deep breath."Mommy?" Lauren called.I slowly unclenched my fists and took a step toward her. From the corner of my eye, I saw Wyatt take a step back."Yes? Are you hurting anywhere, huh?" I asked worriedly, placing my hand on her forehead. I sighed in relief when I felt that it was no longer as hot as before."Who's he?" she asked suddenly in a weak voice, her eyes fluttering. I gently stroked her hair and smiled."He's—" I began, but before I could finish, the nurse from earlier arrived."Ms. Buenaventura?" she called.I smiled at Lauren before turning to the nurse, who was now peeking through th
Chapter 39.2I frowned when I saw that the call was from an unregistered number. I was about to answer when the cashier called me. She told me the total of our hospital bill, so I reached into my bag, took out my card, and handed it to her. When I looked back at my phone, the call had ended. Just as I was about to return it to my bag, it rang again—another call."Hello?" I answered, still frowning."Are you the guardian of Lauren Buenaventura?" asked the voice on the other end of the line.Fear and panic immediately gripped my heart for reasons I couldn't explain. I swallowed hard and tightened my grip on the phone."Y-yes. I'm her mother. Why? What happened?" I asked nervously."Her classmates saw her suddenly collapse at the cafeteria..." I blinked rapidly, and after that, I could no longer hear the rest of what the caller was saying. The only thing running through my mind was that Lauren had fainted. My mind went blank and I suddenly felt short of breath. Panic began to take over.
Chapter 39.1When I returned to Daddy’s room, that incident was still bothering my mind.I wanted to smack myself for thinking something so impossible. Maybe they just used the same perfume, that’s why it seemed like that. He’s not the only one with that kind of scent here in the Philippines.Absentmindedly, I placed the food I brought on a small table inside Daddy’s room. I let out a deep sigh and sat down on a nearby chair. I rested my head against the backrest and shut my eyes tightly."Who's with Lauren?"I opened my eyes and immediately looked at Daddy, who was apparently already awake."She's with Edna," I replied and slowly stood up. "How are you feeling? Why did you have an attack?"I saw his expression change instantly. He looked away and turned to face the window of the room.Silence settled between the two of us, as if an angel had passed between us."Uh, I bought food from their cafeteria," I broke the silence and immediately arranged the food on the table. After fixing th
Chapter 38.2“I'm sorry, ma'am, but that’s the hospital policy,” said the guard. I just nodded at him and looked down at Lauren, who was now looking up at me.“I'll stay here and wait for you, mommy,” she said, surprising me. I immediately shook my head.“No, baby. I won’t leave you alone here. We'll wait for Tita Edna, okay?” I said. She nodded. I held her hand and brought her to a nearby waiting shed.I lifted Lauren so she could sit down. I felt her back and noticed it was damp with sweat.I took a towel from the bag we brought and placed it on her back.I got another towel to wipe the sweat forming on her forehead and neck. I handed her the tumbler while I fixed her slightly messy hair.“Are you okay, sweetheart?” I asked her.We had been sitting there for a few minutes already, and several passengers had already left, but we were still here. I still hadn't received any text or call from Edna. The sun was already blazing, making me sweat profusely.“Yeah,” she replied and looked a
