Riley's POV

The fluorescent lights hummed overhead like angry wasps as I stared at my computer screen. The words blurred together, and I blinked hard, trying to focus on the campaign proposal I'd been working on for the past hour.

"Are you okay over there?" Sarah called from her desk across the office.

"Fine," I lied, forcing my fingers to keep typing. "Just concentrating."

It was Friday afternoon of my first week at Riverside Marketing, and I was running on three hours of sleep and pure determination. We'd spent one glorious week in a cheap motel room—seven days of actual beds, a working bathroom, and a mini-fridge that felt like luxury. But the hundred and forty dollars had eaten through most of my remaining cash, and now we were back to sleeping in the car until my first paycheck arrived at month's end.

Lily had been restless all week, confused about why we'd left the "nice room" to sleep in the car again. I'd been staying up late in McDonald's parking lots, using their wifi to fin

Marcus's POVThe newspaper lands on my desk with a soft thud. I'm reaching for my coffee when the headline catches my eye:"FROM HOMELESS TO HERO: Local Woman Transforms Tragedy into Triumph"Below it, a photo of Riley Plia smiling in her hospital office, surrounded by thank-you cards from families. My coffee goes cold as I read.Riley Plia, 24, was homeless and desperate when her daughter needed life-saving surgery. Today, she's Mercy General Hospital's most successful patient advocate, helping families navigate the medical system she once feared."I know what it feels like to be powerless," Plia says. "That's why I fight so hard to empower others."In just two months, Plia has helped over seventy families secure medical care for their children. Her innovative approach combines practical assistance with emotional support, creating a model other hospitals are eager to replicate."Riley has revolutionized how we serve families in crisis," says Dr. Elena Vasquez, pediatric cardiologist.

Riley's POV"Mrs. Anderson, I understand you're scared." I sit across from the woman clutching her teenage son's hand. "But the surgery Dr. Martinez is recommending could save Jamie's life.""What if something goes wrong?" Her voice shakes. "What if I'm making the wrong choice?""What if you're making the right one?"I've been having this conversation for three days. Jamie Anderson needs immediate surgery for a brain tumor, but his mother is paralyzed by fear."I was terrified when my daughter needed heart surgery," I continue. "I thought I'd lose her either way—to the disease or to the operating table.""What did you do?""I realized that doing nothing was also a choice. And it was the wrong one."Jamie squeezes his mother's hand. "Mom, I want to try."Mrs. Anderson looks at her son, then at me. "You really think this is right?""I think Dr. Martinez is one of the best pediatric surgeons in the country. I think Jamie is brave. And I think you're a good mother who's going to make the

Brett's POV"The board meeting is in twenty minutes, Mr. Graham." Marcus checks his watch as we walk through Mercy General's lobby. "Are you sure this hospital tour is necessary?"I adjust my tie, trying to look like I care about the new pediatric wing donation. "Graham Industries needs good PR. This is good PR.""Since when do you personally oversee charity photo ops?"Since Riley works here. But I can't tell Marcus that. Can't admit I've been driving by this hospital for weeks, hoping to catch a glimpse of her."Mr. Graham?" A woman in scrubs approaches us. "I'm Dr Olivia, pediatric department head. Thank you for your generous donation.""My pleasure." I shake her hand, scanning the lobby. "I'd like to see how the funds are being used.""Of course. We're particularly proud of our new patient advocacy program."My pulse quickens. "Patient advocacy?""We hired a remarkable young woman who's revolutionized how we help families navigate the system. Her success rate is unprecedented.""I

Riley's POV"Mommy, is this really ours?" Lily bounces on the small sofa in our new apartment, her stuffed elephant clutched tight against her chest."Yes, baby. This is our home now." I set down the last box of our meager belongings, trying to keep the emotion out of my voice. After eight months of sleeping in a car, having four walls and a door that locks feels like a miracle. The apartment isn't much. It is a studio with a Murphy bed and a kitchenette but it's three blocks from Mercy General Hospital. My new job and my own fresh start."Can I put my elephant on the bed?""Of course." I watch her arrange her few toys with the careful precision of a child who's learned not to lose anything. "Tomorrow's my first day at work. Mrs Dorathy from downstairs will watch you until I get home."Lily looks up from her elephant. "Are you scared?""A little," I admit. "But I'm excited too.""Like when I got my heart fixed?"Lily asked, still bouncing around."Exactly like that."She nods solemnly,

  • The Billionaire’s Broken Contract   Chapter 46: The Decision

Dr. Vasquez's POVI've been treating children for fifteen years, and I've never seen a case quite like Lily Plia's. Not medically—her heart surgery was routine, her recovery textbook perfect. But the circumstances surrounding her care have been... unusual."Dr. Vasquez?" My nurse appears in the doorway. "Your two o'clock is here."Lily bounces into my office, followed by Riley, who looks better than she has in months. There's color in her cheeks, confidence in her posture. The shelter has been good for her."How's my favorite patient?" I ask Lily, who immediately launches into a detailed report of her activities at the shelter."And Mommy helps other mommies find jobs," she finishes proudly."Is that right?" I glance at Riley, who blushes slightly."I've been volunteering. It's... fulfilling.""I'm glad to hear it. Lily, would you like to go play with the toys in the waiting room while I talk to your mom?"After Lily leaves, I turn to Riley. "She looks wonderful. How are you doing?""

Riley's POV"Your resume is impressive," I tell Sandra, the woman sitting across from me in the shelter's computer room. "You just need to reframe your experience.""Reframe?""You weren't 'just a housewife.' You were a household manager, a financial coordinator, a child development specialist. You organized schedules, managed budgets, coordinated medical care."Sandra's eyes light up. "I never thought of it that way.""Employers don't want to hear what you weren't doing. They want to hear what you were accomplishing."Sandra's face lights up as she reads through her revised resume. "This is amazing. I actually sound... professional.""You are professional," I tell her firmly. "You just needed to see it yourself.""How did you learn to do this?" she asks, saving the document to her flash drive."I work in marketing," I say, then correct myself. "Well, I'm supposed to work in marketing. My boss has been incredibly understanding about my situation."It's true. When I called Janet in tea
