Riley's POV

"You look tired." Marcus said as he appeared beside me in the penthouse kitchen, his voice gentle. I was making tea, but my hands were still shaking from yesterday's humiliation.

"I'm fine."

"No, you're not." He said as he pulled out a chair at the small staff table. "Sit. I'll make the tea."

I hesitated, then sat as Marcus moved around the kitchen with practiced ease, and I realized this wasn't the first time he'd offered kindness to someone in my position.

"How long have you worked for him?" I asked.

"Eight years." Marcus poured hot water into two cups. "He's not always like this."

"What's he usually like?"

"Complicated." Marcus sat across from me. "He's been through things that would break most people. Doesn't excuse his behavior, but it explains it."

"You sound like you care about him."

"I do. And I care about you too." He slid a cup toward me. "That's why I'm going to give you some advice."
